Key Cut for $1 @ Mitre 10 BNE CBD (Limit 3)

750

Our good good friends™ at Bunnings usually do one for $2.50, so a swell price to be sure. Flier says 'house key'; not sure if that implies a specific subset of blanks or not. Adelaide Elizabeth St store is the one with the key cutting machine. The most interesting of the other specials would be the 'buy a bucket, get 20% off what you put in it' one.

    This deal will surely get people through the door!

  • +3

    They may get a little keyed up about this deal.

  • +8

    That bucket deal, you should buy another bucket, so that everything inside THAT bucket will be 20% off the already 20% discount from the first bucket!

    First bucket 80% price
    second 64%
    third 51.2%

    eventually you can things down to 1%.. theoretically :P

    • +5

      Though unless you find a series of buckets that grow smaller in size, you'll eventually reach a stack height where the next bucket you put in won't technically be 'in' the first bucket on the bottom.

      …geeze, listen to us.

      • Typical Ozbargainers trying to devise a way to get the best discount.

      Surely, beyond the pail!

      Haha, this must be the sequel to the Singaporean birthday question…

      Unfortunately, even if the shop allowed this (as a reward for ingenuity) the bottom 19 buckets will always be each more than 1% of the original value so you'd have to purchase a…bucket-load lot of buckets to reach an average of 1% per bucket.

      101 to be exact if my calculations are correct…

      $b = 1;
      $i = 1; //100% for 1 bucket

      while ($i > 0.01) {

          $b++;

      $i = (1 + 0.8 * $i)/$b;

      }

      var_dump($i); // 0.0099808433522757 (< 1%)
      var_dump($b); // 101 (buckets)

        That's some next level stuff right there!

        However, what if they do have buckets that incrementally get smaller as well? And they all fit one after the other?

        The smaller they get, the cheaper they are? So the dollars saved could also be less each time round.

        We have to go deeper..!

    The key tip is to be there early. Hopefully everyone makes the cut.

    Think I'll cut and run from this thread!

    Is there a way to get a "do not copy" key (security key for garage complex entrance) copied without going through strata? Property came with only 1x and it's $50 for another, what a rip off.

    • Can you get hold of some body corporate letterhead?

      • Are you insinuating a letter of forgery nature?

        • +3

          Yes ;)

        • @strangeloops66:

          It crossed my mind for a moment, however I thought the key would be given to you via Strata, in order for them to ensure you do not go and get 5x cut. What would the letter even say? Can't find any examples on the googlewebs.

          @minty:

          I wasn't being serious. But check out this thread on Whirlpool:http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1869147

          If it's a "normal" key, any locksmith should do it. Best advice, take it to a locksmith. Worst case, he can only say "no".

          Does the lease stipulate how many copies should be provided?

    • Is it a generic key blank? I've had them copied with no issues

  • It seems like everywhere i go in box hill is $9 a pop.

      No Bunnings in Box Hill?

      EDIT: Go to 259 Middleborough Road.

  • the key to this great deal is … oh wait

    Too late for me.. Paid $7.95 for a simple house key yesterday at Mister Minit :(

    Bunnings or Masters price beat - 90c!

  • Ok, now the key /door jokes are mostly done with.. an actual question on the deal!

    Anyone know if they actually know how to cut keys properly? I've tried various key cutters over the years and there are a fair few including Bunnings from my last experience that seem not to use precise enough gear and for some types of keys (the more robust lockwood door locks from my experience) their cutting machines are not precise enough and end up with a key that jams and otherwise doesn't really work right.

    I never tried masters for keys.. wondering if others here had feedback? I assume most of the masters stores would use the same type of key cutting machines.. or maybe not? That said sometimes the operator is the problem not the machine, e.g. Bunnings if I recall correctly cut the keys backwards when I was there last. ;)

    • It really depends - a lot of the time it's luck of the draw. I've had 3-4 keys cut at this store with no issues, still in use. I've had a batch of 15 cut at Bunnings with only one dud. I've also had one cut at Bunnings that needed 4 repeat visits to get right. They did it for free every time, plus let me keep the dud - there might be a business model in that for someone with lots of local stores…

  • Hi GeotaXis
