What to Do with My Old Car??

Hi all,\

I am currently driving a 1995 Daihatsu Charade (The Diehardsu). It's 3 door, 3 cylinder and just won't die. The car just keeps on driving but I want to move onto bigger and better things. The dilemma is what to do with the car to make the most of it.

Do I fix the leaky door with a new rubber seal, give it a spit shine and try sell it registered? Get some rego money back from the plates and sell it ungregistered. Or considering the prices people are charging at the wreckers/online should I sell the car off in pieces over gumtree?

Your opinions would be much appreciated. Hell if you want to make an offer, I'm in Brisbane! Cheers fellow OzBargainers

Dont even fix it. Sell it for $500.

Don't spend any more money on it. Just sell it and move on.

    • Cheers for your input, I was thinking that. Unregistered I'm guessing? Just flat out say the door leaks, air con doesn't work but the car still drives absolutely fine.

      • Is it currently registered?

        • Yeah it's currently registered until October.

          @stevil:

Then sell as is, registered, asap :)

  • Id say sell it, but honestly, how? No one will buy it, gumtree is full of cheap old bombs and the only arse holes that answer the ads are just that, lowballers and time wasters.

  • Too expensive to fix unless you want to keep driving it. I recently had a Ford 1987 engine reconditioned and it cost around $1000.

I'm not sure how much it will cost you to fix the simple problems that you have.

    • The engine is in fine order, the car drives no worries. The drivers side door needs a new seal to stop a leak, one of the speakers doesn't work, aircon needs a regas. I got the car a roadworthy 3 years ago and it hasn't done much driving since then.

I'll get the ball rolling and offer $50.

    • haha I wasn't expecting an auction but it's the first offer so far!

Just keep going with this, you may have started something good for me here.

Gees some are selling for over 2 grand on gumtree (in WA)

    • Yeah hence why I've been throwing up the question and it hasn't blown up or anything, car still drives around just fine. Would feel like a waste to just scrap it.

  • Sell it to a car wreckers. Probably give you a couple hundred for it.

    • Those guys lowball so badly. Got offered $50 for them to come pick it up. That just seems way too little for a registered, running car.

      • I'm just after a cheap runabout for my Dad to use while he's visiting….

  • As it is currently registered, why would you consider doing anything other than selling as is?

    • Just because the fixes aren't monumental and it would just serve as bargaining power for the buyer to drop the price down. If I fix up the slight problems it's a solid unit then.

Just give it a wash, cut off any dodgy door seal and sell it. Nobody expects a 20yro car to be perfect.

        • Thanks, appreciate the input. This option is definitely taking the lead on my decision.

Stevil, please be careful. The law is not on the side on some of the advise you have been getting. You MUST get all required repairs done and the Safety Certificate first before you are even allowed to advertise, if selling registered. The door seals must work, to stop exhaust fumes getting in and killing long distance drivers(you fall asleep), the speakers and A/C do not matter as long as the demister on the windscreen is functioning without A/C.
If the body and trim wise in good nick(appearances are everything) and the car actually looks good, spend the $77? and get a roadie. Then do the sums on repairs. Compare fixing what is required to what makes it look nicer, and compare these numbers to similar cars for sale in Aust. Similar means within same 2 years of manufacture, withing 20% odometer reading, colour, general condition, extras etc. Compare same with same, and if you want to risk making more money against it running out of rego in October, against space and the effort required, all things considered in your particular situation. You need to spend money to make money. Registered is worth much more and easier to sell than unregistered, can't road test it, tyres and battery goes flat, it becomes a waste. No matter how old or how many klms' it MUST still be safe to Qld standards.
Or, stretching the legal aspect just a touch, advertise it but with perviso…will sell unregistered. No need for roady although it would still make it easier to sell if people have an idea of the mechanical condition. For your final decision, ask Qld Transport for fine points of the rules to stay legal. Hope this helps and not hinders you with so much info. They are great little cars and a ripper of learners and 1st car, or as a 2nd cheap runabout. Priced correctly and clean, registered or not, you will sell it easily. Cheers.
