OzBargain blocked by Palo Alto firewall

Hi,

We've had OzBargain blocked at work by our firewall which is by Palo Alto. According to the logs its because of Jabber on the site. Ive looked everywhere but cant figure out why it is categorising this way. Interestingly it is only on http://www.ozbargain.com.au - blog.ozbargain.com.au and files.ozbargain.com.au are fine (as well as RSS feeds in my Outlook).

I cant get an exception because of our IT manager being security conscious so im wondering if there's any way I can look at OzBargain without the Jabber component?

Your thoughts are appreciated. I'm hoping i posted this in the right place..

Look at it on your phone?

  • What is Jabber?

Jabber on wikipedia, which was what XMPP was called previously. XMPP is used in many peer-to-peer communications. Google Talk/Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp — they all have XMPP backend.

But no, OzBargain does not use Jabber. Unless it's literally jabber:

verb (used with object), verb (used without object)
to talk or utter rapidly, indistinctly, incoherently, or nonsensically; chatter.

Sounds like when someone just scored a deal.

      • LOL!

      • Sounds like the stockbrokers at the ASX.

  • What happens if you try to view the mobile version? Would that work?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/mobile/setfullsite?mobile=1

  • Use https instead of http. Mights do the trick as same happened to me at my workplace and https works with no issues

  • Thanks for your comments. Looking on my phone is fine but i was hoping to use it legitimately in my lunch break :-)

The site redirects me to https if i try to use http.

Mobile site doesnt work either. I find it all very weird!

Same here doesnt work at my workplace (proxy server not responding error). I dont think it is specifically blocked..as blocked sites such as facebook/ebay comes up with a clear messsage on screen that they are blocked.

All other websites work well but I have tried using ozbargain from multiple computers at work..but still doesnt work. I should mention that it was working well until couple of months ago.

  • Same. Was working fine months ago.
