    • I reckon it's not a good idea to SLI especially with 3.5 GB VRAM issue

      • Read the posts above, the 4.5gb VRAM issue makes very little difference in a single card, same with SLI.

  • Card died (Radeon 5670) in my Phenom X2 555 (dual core) setup.

This looks to be way overpowered and CPU would then be the bottleneck.

Could anyone recommend an alternative? Is the R9 270 appropriate, or would CPU still be the bottleneck there?

    • +2

Look at it this way, if you get this you could keep using it when you get a better CPU rather than buying a less powerful card and having that be the bottleneck later.

      • Thanks - good point.

However I was thinking a less powerful card could be 1/2 the price though (R9 270 is around $210), and if/when the CPU is upgraded later, the price of this card may be half of what it is now (but it would be new).

        • But wouldn't it cost the same in the end? The only difference being you get to use the 970 the the entire time instead of half.

But if you're really set on getting a cheaper card I'd look into getting a used 7970 or 280X. They can be had for about $150-200 and can still run many current titles at max settings at 1080p. And for the price are much better than the 270.

        • @dqtl74:

It would cost the same but I'd have two cards for the same price (and potentially looking to retire the X2 555 setup for the next upgrade, so I may buy the next card as part of a new rig).

Thanks for the advice. I've checked out used 7970/280X and the price is around $200-250? Does that sound reasonable? Problem with the used card is it may bork after a few months, new card has more reliable warranty. With the 270 new at $210 and the 280X costing a little more used, the decision seems to skew towards a new card… too many choices in graphics cards :)

          @klownz:

Where abouts are you getting those prices from? Seems a bit on the expensive side. Performance wise, I'd look at actual reviews of the 280X vs just comparing the stats.

For example, in this article, you can see the performance can be small in some games but fairly major in others. Personally, I would risk a used card provided they can also offer proof of purchase and are willing to assist with warranty issues should the need arise. Most companies have a warranty period of 2 years so I'd say in most cases you'd be covered until 2016 at least.

PM me if you want to discuss more.

  • I ordered this card on Saturday and received it today. Fantastic service! Thanks alot
Can't wait for Witcher 3 as well

  • Just got a free copy of The Witcher 3 with the GTX 970 I bought from MSY last year as compensation for the VRAM issue! Good on you Gigabyte… I hope Nvidia has to pay for it.

    • How did you get that? Emailed them?

      • Emailed Gigabyte, same person I got the Ubisoft code from.

Should have bought it. Much regret.

    • Same.. same..
I was over-thinking if I should buy or not and just yesterday my current card is now semi-dead and I want to pull the pin, but the deals over :(

      • I ended up buying it at a local retailer for 519… ended up about 10% worse of after accounting for shipping.

(Still got the Witcher 3 code)
