Woolworths Aisle for Odd bunch fruits and veges

Woolworths has started a new aisle for odd bunch fruits and vegetables. The quality of the fruits and veges are no different but come at reduced prices As the shape of the items are odd. Should support this if we want it to continue. Good savings.

Harris Farm Markets (NSW) has had odd produce bins for a while now. It's also good for farming, reduces waste.

  • I've noticed these in Woolworths, and have started buying the "Odd Bunch" cucumbers as we use them for salads for lunch every week - they're usually about $1.48 whilst the "normal" ones are $2.98, so that's a reasonable saving. So far our local Woolies only has cucumbers and carrots and I think maybe one type of apple in this range, so hopefully they'll extend it to include other fruit and veg.

The amount of fruit going to waste because they are odd shaped or bruised will scare and/or astound people.

Fruit is fruit so long as its not rotten its all good.

Some consumers are to blame for their expectations that fruit should be a certain range in weight and size. If there was no demand for this then there would not be such a market for fruit or vegies only fitting a certain range in size and weight.

    • It is indeed a sad reality :(

    • I just can't get sad, scared or outraged at food going to waste.

It seems like people being kind of overly moral or something as though some sort of harm is occurring which I just can't see.

We live in a culture which is awash in food, you cannot go 50 yards in a city without seeing an opportunity to get it. Food has very little value in a situation like this just like anything else.

  • The apples are fine, just very small so good for quick snack. Carrots, cucumber, zucchini are usually skinny. Avocados and limes are just smaller. Plums and pears seem normal.

  • I buy them. So far carrots, pears, cucumbers. The smaller size is good when you have children anyway. I actually prefer them over the 'perfect' looking fruit and veg which feel a little unnatural for me.

  • Neither of my local stores have these yet.

Are the odd shaped offers sold individually/by weight, or pre-packaged?

Can't speak for Woolies, but HFM sells them by weight. You use green plastic bags to distinguish them from full priced produce.

    • At Woolies, they are prepackaged.

  • Seaford meadows woolies in sa have odd bunch carrots for $1 (some massive ones and interesting shapes) potatoes (can't remember the price per kg) and apples and pears. I haven't been there for a few weeks, but the apples and pears were at least $1/kg cheaper than their regular stock. Apples and pears have come down a lot now so I'm not sure what the prices would be

  • Quite agree that there is nothing wrong with this fruit and veg.

Interesting, as this is the stuff they used to reject from suppliers, so Aldi bought it instead and sold it cheaper. Woolies have realised their mistake, and I suspect they are now selling it to try and thwart Aldi.

I have always been wary of Aldi stuff, you need to pick it over carefully, and I rarely ever buy anything sealed in bags, like potatoes etc, where you cannot see every piece. Got bitten too many times with a rotten or mouldy piece.

    • Yeah, that's the only thing about the woolies stuff I don't like - it's all bagged up already and you can't check the fruit properly. Having said that, I've had plenty of dodgy "regular" stuff from woolies too

  • I bought Avacado 1kg bag for $5.68 nothing wrong with them except they are quite small, which is better as I will eat the whole avacado. I think Aldi sells them around $6.50.

  • This is great news both for saving money and reducing waste. I imagine it would be good for the farmers too. I'll be buying them. There's a fruit shop somewhere in Brisbane that does the same.

Yes, the "Odd Bunch" fruit and veg were a great idea … until our local Woolies store decided to get rid of them last week. They no longer sell anything from the Odd Bunch range. Thanks (for nothing) Woolworths.

I bet it was taking sales away from the full priced items.

    • Still available at other Woolies. Should speak to them.

      • I had a look at the other Woolies store I go to regularly, which is a few minutes further away and they didn't seem to have them any more either. Will ask next time I'm up there and see whether they've removed the range permanently.

Love the Odd Bunch range, pick up cheap potatoes, tomatoes and apples all the time. Couldn't care less how it looks, so it works out perfectly and the food doesn't get wasted :)

    I even like it.

  • I love the Odd Bunch range and on some items, I actually prefer it! I think the carrots and zucchinis are better.

This week I tried the wash potatoes which were half the cost of regular and they were exactly the same!

  • Just got a 1kg bag of washed potatoes and they were perfectly fine. The price was great as well

  • Have to laugh when they package fruit/veggies and have to give them a use by date.
Always pick up half price specials because it is near the 'expiry date' when they are still fresh…:)

Best I have ever seen is Salt having a use by date….for petes sake salt will last for millennium..
