Items for a toolkit for a remote field trip

Hi all,

I work for a University and several times throughout the year I go with students on field trips, all >4 hours away from Perth, some at least 2 hours from the nearest town. I need to put together a toolkit of sorts which could deal with basically anything that could go wrong. We take plenty of first aid gear and a complete 4WD recovery kit so this toolkit wouldn't need to consider any of that. Luckily nothing has gone wrong yet, but I need to be prepared for anything and therefore am putting this kit together.

What I have so far is:

  • Fuse tester + Box of assorted fuses
  • Screwdriver set
  • Adjustable wrenches
  • Socket set
  • Multi grips
  • Various tapes
  • Allan Key set
  • Stanley Knife

Everything I get needs to fit in a standard sized tool box ~70cm long so I can't go overboard and pack everything that Bunnings stock.

What I would like to know is what I am missing? I've thought of several situations, such as fixing a generator or other power issues, auto-electrical problems, etc and this set gets me out of everything.

Comments

  • Seems a lot of stuff for a small field trip.

If it were me, i'd carry a bottle jack and a breaker bar - because most jacks are shit. Maybe some tape. The rest i wouldnt bring.

    • The next trip is 2 weeks away with 25 students and 4 staff per week. 1 25 seat bus, 2 Landcruisers and an auto 3 ton truck to the literal middle of no where.

Our 4WD recovery kit has an exhaust jack and a high lift jack so we should be sorted jack-wise. Breaker bar is a good idea though.

  • A persuader like a hammer/hatchet/mallet.
A small file so if you absolutely have to cut off a bit of twisted metal it is possible (if time consuming).
    A couple of hose clamps.
Some jb weld or similar putty.

  • Consider rolling up a foot or two of wire (bit lighter gauge than fencing wire, but if you've got fencing wire, that'll do).

  • About a meter of electrical wire with aligator clips on the ends times 2.

  • Duct tape + strong scissors — your kit probably has one.
4 way lug wrench (a good proper one) — replace your factory standard one
    Tyre pressure gauge
Tyre repair kit or plug kit — not super neccessary but if you don't have a spare tyre..
Seat belt cutter / window breaking tool — fits in your glovebox.
    Reflective triangles
Road maps — the paper kind — under the passenger seat
    a spare headlight bulb —
a maglite or emergency lantern with a hook for working in the dark — in the glove box
a hand sanitizer — in the glove box
    long jumper cables

Bluetooth OBDII diagnostic scanner — in circumstances it may tell you what is wrong with your vehicle.

    • I have a decent road map (need to remember to pack it though!) and a GPS. All our vehicles have belt cutters/window smashers thankfully and the 4WD recovery kit has a lot of the other stuff. Spare globes are a good point though.
