New bank account wanted - any recommendations?

Looking for a normal daily use bank account. I am currently with Citibank and really happy with them. The only problem is that there are no branches and every deposit into my account takes days to clear.

Anyone knows some good alternatives?

NAB has no 'account-keeping-fee' for some of their 'everyday' type accounts. If you want to avoid such fees, you may wish to consider NAB. Money paid in from any other NAB account is transferred almost instantly, but from another bank it will always be somewhat unpredictable; it's essentially out of the "recipient bank's" hands.

EDIT: I say 'always' meaning under the current system it will 'always be that way'… I seem to recall hearing that there are moves afoot to make inter-bank transfers essentially instant, in Australia. If those changes go through, then maybe you could just stick with your current bank…

NAB Classic everyday account, no fee, has physical branch.

  • What kind of deposit? You putting in cash? Cheques? Or other people putting in money for you? Can you switch to paperless banking? Do people still write cheques much these days? I haven't written one for years.

  • You know you can do normal banking stuff for Citibank at any NAB? They act as their agent.

  • I am currently with Citibank and really happy with them.

Well, considering how terrible Citibank's internet banking and mobile apps are, I think you will be quite happy with any bank of the big four. My vote goes for NAB as they don't have an account keeping fee.

    • I recently got a Citibank account because of the 0% foreign transaction fee..

But by golly their internet banking makes me want to headbutt a fork.
For such a large bank their internet banking is absolutely crap.

  • Bankwest Qantas transaction account

  • Do cheques clear faster when you deposit them at a bank rather than at a PO acting as an agent for the bank? I know it takes forever to clear a cheque through my ING Direct account on the extremely rare occasions I need to deposit a cheque, but it used to take forerever back in the day at the bank.

  • No cheque but I often deposit or get deposited cash ammounts which I need instantly.

Thanks for the ideas, will have a look at the NAB t&c's

    • Cash deposits are instant when I do it at the PO on an ING Direct account.

I'd need some convincing to think any NAB account is better than ING. Deposit $1000 a month and you get all ATM transactions free, 2% cashback on Paywave to $100, no fees, one of the better interest rates on the linked savings account, 50c bonus if you withdraw $200 or more from eftpos- whoopee. What do you get from NAB?

The only negative for ING is 2.5% fee on transactions in a foreign currency. I keep a Citibank account for those.

  • ING - withdraw from any ATM free of charge. love this ING …. easily deposit at Post office, balance available straight away.

    • I'd second ING. If you want a referral can both get a $250 webjet voucher!

      • Dome deal. PM me details and I will use it when signing up.

        • You're still dealing with the whole no branches issue. Aust Post =/ Bank Branch!

  • For how long is that voucher valid?

  • Anyone else wants to do referral? Need a second one for my wife.

    • Done, thanks
