Hard Waste Collection - Property Not Eligible

Hi,

I'm trying to get rid of an old worn down couch but the council (Knox in VIC) is saying that my property is not eligible for hard waste collection.

I moved into a townhouse 3 years back that was built on a subdivided lot. At that time we were told that the waste collection service I.e. Rubbish and recycling was to be handled by a private company that worked through the owners corp. we were told by the agent that hard waste would be handled by the council

Now, when I wanted to get rid of the couch I contacted Knox CC to collect the couch (there is no scheduled hard waste collection in Knox and only an on-call service) but they told they can't as the property is not eligible for any waste services from the council. Apparently the original development plan had a clause that stipulated that all waste services including hard waste would be handled privately.

Looking for some advice here. Should I try to escalate the issue with Knox and try to get an exception? If so any tips on the arguments?

The council tax do include a % for waste services so there is no discount there as well.

Knox council would have to be the - well, I can't say here.

You have a couple of issues, and I think it's quite likely that you can't win any of them.

First of all, the agent apparently lied to you. Did you get what he said in writing?

Secondly, your "owner's corp" are apparently responsible for waste collection, so you need to check your agreement with them to see what services are available to you.

Thirdly, Knox council seem to be charging you for waste services that they do not provide.

Should I try to escalate the issue with Knox and try to get an exception

An exception to what? It appears that your waste collection is not handled by them. Anyway, Knox will not agree to anything.

What would I do in your circumstances? First, check your writing contract/agreement with your owner's corp, to see what is supposed to be provided to you. Probably, nothing other than normal waste collection, but you never know.

Second, when someone else in the neighbourhood puts out their hard waste for collection, knock on their door and ask them nicely if you can put your couch out with their rubbish - it won't cost them anything.

Just borrow a trailer from bunnings and take it to the tip yourself

You can't "borrow a trailer from Bunnings" unless you buy something from them that needs a trailer, and tip prices are very high nowdays.

They were fine with me when I told them that I needed the trailer to move my new paintbrush :)

      • Rubbish(no pun intended) you really can…

      • I've hired a trailer from bunnings for private purposes, no problems. Must be local differences in policy.

        • Hiring is fine, since you pay for the trailer.

At my local Bunnings, you can get a trailer for free for a couple of hours if you buy something that needs a trailer.

Apparently, at ashanrath's local store, you can get a free trailer if you buy a paintbrush.

According to the Bunnings web site:

To get your products home, a courtesy trailer can be arranged free of charge for up to two hours. Bunnings also offer trailers for hire in 4 or 24 hour periods, to help you get jobs done around the home.

I guess if you put your paint brush in the trailer, it would qualify under that wording.

ask your neighbour to call the council for you and put it out the front of their nature strip.

  • Your agent lied/assumed - you should know better.

nothing you can't fix with a hammer or circular saw ….

    • This. I've cut up and stuffed all sorts of (legal to dispose) stuff in our wheelie bin. It's hardly ever full so extras aren't a problem. Catch is that you might need to take a couple of weeks to get rid of it.

If your unit has a bulk bin, check what day it is emptied and try to jam in as much as you can the night before so you don't over fill it and your neighbours get narcy.

Thanks all. Will ask neighbours if they can help.

  • Put it out front. Someone will take it

Put a $50 price tag on it and leave on verge…..it'll be gone by morning.

  • if the couch is in reasonable condition, call up the salvo's and see if they'll come and collect it
