New TV Recommendations? 50"-55" and under $900

Hi Guys,

Hoping you can help. im looking for a new TV and im looking at a size between 50-55 inches. Happy to go for 50" if it will keep me within my budget.

I dont use it for any gaming, it will mainly be normal TV and streaming things like netflix etc. Would like some decent quality viewing obviously and TV capable of handling chromecast.

1) Any ideas about going through somewhere like gumtree? i have always bought electronics brand new as safety.

2) How big a role does the brand play? i found this at bjhifi for example;

Any ideas would be appreciated. and i know there is EOFY sales coming soon and i've kind of missed the good boxing day sales we had.

    I would stick to new for TVs. People (generally) sell TVs because they're either old or broken, and you probably don't want either of them

    2) How big a role does the brand play? i found this at bjhifi for example;

    Brand, or rather cost, plays a role. Even though brands like Kogan will say they use the same panels as other brands, their Quality Assurance processes will be lower and thus they can sell them cheaper but you risk defects.

    I've had a Kogan 55" LCD TV before and it gave me no troubles for the 4 years I had it, it was great! My friend got one and it has given him nothing but troubles. Luck of the draw. I did use it for gaming but I'm not some AV guy who cares how deep the blacks are etc.

    If you want basic TV/Smart TV functions and don't mind the chance of some defects that require warranty claims you can go Kogan (eg 55" Smart TV for $719 + delivery - https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-55-agora-smart-led-tv-ful… )

    It's in your budget and size and has some pretty good features. If you want that size and don't want to risk the quality aspects, you're probably going to have to stretch your budget.

      Sorry but the Kogan TV PQ is horrundus, it needs to be put in store so you could see the difference for yourself.

      Regardless of gaming, the Sony KDL W800/700 gets my vote for the best quality for the money, can be had for ~900 or cheaper with dick smith sales. Go to a store and check the quality yourself.

      Here's one used from ebay if you live around there.

    There will be a sale soon enough (eg like this). I was looking for 60in TV a while back and saw Panasonic one on sale for sub $1000, can't remember which sale though.

  • thanks a lot guys, really appreciate it. i have actually held off from getting the Kogan/DS because teh reviews on them havent been great (not an overwhelming majority, but a majority nonethleless).

    by whats been said i guess its just waiting for something good to come up in the sales.

    thanks again everyone.

    I have been shopping around for the last 4 weeks as well. Sales people in HN, DS or GG are very quiet about this, but I notice they hardly have any sales on TV these past weeks and low amount of stock. Almost zero stocks on early 2014 models, especially the UHD TVs.
    It has been announce in 2015 CES, so there suppose to be a wave of 2015 models coming through within 4-6 weeks. This is across brands LG, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic. They will be pricey, but the current model, hopefully, will be discounted soon after and probably right on time for EOFYS.

    I will be sticking with the four brands above if I were you. There are plenty of refurbish unit or factory seconds on auction sites like Ebay or Graysonline, should you wish to consider them.

    Of the cheaper large screens, Hisense offer a 3 year warranty whilst everyone else is just a 1 year
