Do you remember you own mobile number

So I found out that one of the lady at work didn't remember her own mobile number despite having owned it for over 10 years. She had to call her family member to get the number. This made me wonder if this is a common thing. I remembered I struggled to call out my number in the first month. My missus took nearly a year to remember because she didn't use it often. So how about you guys, how long have you got your number and do you remember?

I know it by heart because I have to quote it often. But it's also a contact on my mobile's contacts in case I have to forward it.

    • +5

fun fact: to know something "by heart" dates back to ancient greek where it was understood that intelligence and emotion originated from your heart.

      • And it's the same idiom in French: par coeur.

      • :P Slightly deviating from that, did you know that you can mistake your heart beating faster from frightening situations with falling in love? In an experiment where they've tested this, by finding out the rate of success on getting a phone number from opposite sex, being on a swing bridge increased the rate significantly (statistically speaking) compared to being on normal ground.

i know mine off my heart, then again its quite easy (consists of 2 numbers after 04)

my sister's number spells out her name.

    • i have no recurring digits in mine after the 04 :(

  • I got an easy number so I rememer ( 5 numbers are zero)

I have trouble with the wife's number but that's prolly due to smart phones. I remember my friends number by the pattern lol

Where u trying to hit on this lady? :)

    • nah, she's too much of a nuisance for that, and only a few more years till retirement age. I just share some of the ozbargains for her and need to send her the link.

      • +1

        All class you are

I have trouble with the wife's number

It's OK I've got it saved in my phone if you need it just ask!

      • +3

McFly, are you at it again… trying to set up your parents in the past…

        • comment of the year goes to …

  • After having my number for a few years and having to tell people what my number is i started remembering it.

  • +4

I got mine to spell out a word. Thanks amaysim.

  • i took 5 years before i decided it was worth committing to memory instead of my contact list.

  • I still have the same number I got 17 years ago with my first mobile phone (a Philips brick!). It was an easy number to remember.

  • Myens my postcode and zeros. Yay!

  • +6

    0404 040 404

Couldn't be simpler to remember, downside is that no one believes that its really my number.

    • +1

I knew someone with a number just like that! Might've even been that number if it's been recycled.

    • no way you'd have this number, and number like this somehow is confusing as well because you never know when that 04 ends.

      • +21

If you are two digits short it will say "four 04s not found".

    • -2

What a bad luck numbers lol.

      • That actually means "not dead not dead not dead not dead" -> alive/immortal/zombie.

  • How can you be an ozbargainer signing up to various websites which require your number and not remember your number?
I dont have any trouble remembering important things like my own number or someones wifi password lol

    • +3

How can you be an ozbargainer signing up to various websites which require your number and not remember your number?

      IKR! Mine is 0412 345 678.

      • +1

Quite easily — most OzBargainers would be sure to use some kind of form-filling software like RoboForm, or at least their browsers form history feature — just click / double-click in any field on most pages and it loads your commonly used entries. FSFUR: email addresses are often disabled under the premise that most people are incapable of correctly typing their email.

After year's of not remembering my phone number i forced it into my memory by using it to log into a piece of equipment i use every day.

mobile numbers contain 10 digits 0-9 or 11! 11x10x9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1 or 39,916,800 combinations… Is my maths right, now im worried we will run out!

    • not really, with current mobile numbering plan, only 04 is reserved for mobile number so in actual you'd only get something like 10^8, not 8! or 11! because it doesn't matter if two digit are the same or not.

    • wouldn't it be 99,999,999 as in 0499 999 999

      • +2

nah it would be 100,000,000 because 04 000 000 would be counted as well

    • +3

Math is wrong. The range is 0400 000 000 to 0499 999 999 giving you a total of 100,000,000 combinations.

They may have reserved any combinations with a 000 sequence in the number, but who really knows?

      • They may have reserved any combinations with a 000 sequence in the number, but who really knows?

They haven't, someone I know had a number that was like 04-000-000-23

    • It's true we'll run out, ACMA predicts it could happen as early as 2017.

But not to worry, they have 05- numbers reserved and ready to go :)

Unless there is an average of FOUR phone per person in Australia, I doubt it.

        • +2

an average of FOUR phone per person

          *SIMs

        • @Scrooge McDuck: sims expire and eventually go back into a new sim.

        • +1

          @holden93:

          *valid SIMs

        • with the 'internet of things' and a growing range of phone-networked devices it's conceivable within a couple of decades an average Australian could have in excess of a hundred items at home/work that have an IP address, and dozens of those could have a phone number. Physical SIMs are unlikely to be around for much longer, based on moves in the US to make phones/tablets simless.

        • @kryzstoff:

I would think that IoT stuff at home/work would work off of WiFi not a cell network, due to cost of manufacturing the device.

        • And those road emergency side phones, and those GSM backed alarms, new cars with telematics, people with sims in tablets and laptops, Miki card readers in Melbourne, panic button systems used by security officers and a lot more.

        • @transblur:
Would be good to maybe put them on an 05 code or something, rather than have them take up the 04 range.

    • You're math is only right if you can't use a number more than once.
But you shouldn't start with 11 anyway since there are only 10 numbers you can use.

    • They recycle the numbers in Australia, which is both good and bad I guess.

Otherwise they'll just add more digits, China has 12 digits, Singapore only 8.

  • I know one of the two- dual sim. You are asked to write down a mobile number so often for two-factor authentication it eventually sinks in.

  • +1

I was able to choose my number when I first got it (20 years ago). It's my birthdate … makes it easy to remember.

    • Nice one, i guess your family and friends dont have an excuse for not remembering your bday.

  • +10

My SO's number and mine are so similar that she used to get calls from people trying to contact me. That started almost 12 years ago, before I've even met her. True story :)

    • +4

Ordinarily I'd think a story like that would be bollocks, but a similar thing happened to me. First boyfriend had the exact number as I did, apart from the last two numbers.

Freaked me the hell out when it was first given to me. Thought he had written down my number, and all kinds of panic set in.. like how on Earth does this person know my number?! Is this a joke?. We lived in different states and were complete strangers to start with. Go figure.

@Turnip, tempted to say he was THE ONE and that you should txt him a wedding proposal straight away. But I won't. My wife's way too fond of your current arm candy for him to be a single man :p Thank you for getting him off the market.

Now if only you had a friend who could snatch up "Sweet, sweet Hamza" off the market too, that would really help. My mrs is way too fond of him. That guy can do no wrong in her eyes *sigh

Edit: "Sweet, Sweet Hamza" is pretty awesome but then so am I . And she's my wife , shouldn't she be on my side , even when I'm clearly in the wrong? o.O

I remember my mobile number but not the home number -that's saved in my mobile phone. Her family should have just told her to save it in the phonebook and quit calling them.

  • i remember mine, its quite easy and only has doubles i.e 04XX,II.ZZ.YY. My Dad has an easy one to remember too 04XX 911 911

  • I remember my number and probably 20 of my friends and relatives.

  • I don't remember my wife's number, despite her having the same number since the day we met. Since I only use my mobile phone and never actually type the number, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to ever learn it. Makes perfect sense to me. It's a sore point though and my wife is not happy about it :-p

I do know my own number since it's something you always have to fill in when making purchases and appointments etc.

    • My wife's is only one digit different (2 instead of 3) also her birthday is the day after my mum's.
Lucky for me I can easily remember them all!

  • +1

She hasn't been picked up in 10 years!!, leave her alone.

  • +1

i almost always remember my number but recently had a mental blank when I was going to leave a message for someone that gave me a scare.

  • +1

I can remember my number and my work number and my mum's number.

And my bank login numbers and my old credit card number.

    And my Tax file number.

    • I used to be able to say I remembered pretty much all the numbers I cared about, then I ended up with ~8 Visa/MasterCard/Amex cards for various accounts…

  • +1

I think it depends on the usefulness and how often you use it. After getting into ozbargain and online shopping, I tend to need the number on spot, so I ended up memorising it. That happened with my passport number (which I've forgotten as a result of a traveling hiatus).

  • My mobile is my work number, so I give is out daily which helps a lot!

I remember mine, my parents, my SO's. I think it's pretty slack if you can't remember your own phone number.

  • I know my number. I used to know all my friend's home number by heart, must be getting old.

I thought there was a poll for this post.I haven't read past post, it might be mentioned before.

  • I only know my number because of all the forms i fill up. But don't remember anybody else's number, which is not a good idea in case i need help with a dead or lost phone.

  • +1

3 of mine, my grandparents', my parents', my brother's, my close friends', emergency and several other special numbers.

I also remember full names of most of my classmates from Year 1 to Uni.

    How about birthdays, people?

    • I remember birthdays of friends I've known since kindergarten / primary school….

      • Really? You have a good memory then. I can hardly remember anything before I was 6.

        • Used to be good with phone numbers too. Now I remember Medicare card number, tax file number, a credit card or two, etc.

  • my name spell is my mobile number.

You can create your own number 📱 with Amaysim: Put in four digits and they will create a number 📱 thats around that. I've now ported to lebara and I still have that number 📱.

  • +1

This reminds me of one of the most annoying things when travelling. Either the sim card doesn't have a phone number set or my past collection of Android phones simply don't work properly (they always say "unknown" when I check the phone's status). There are a few methods that allow you to store your phone number on some working Android phones (with comptaible sims) (http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/3072/in-my-samsun…).Sim cards in Asia never seem to have a straight-forward sign in English that says "your number" even when instructions are in English. For some reason, if it's even written on the pack to begin with it'll always be the last 10 digits or so of a longer sequence (and I don't recall it having anything to do with country codes). Was everything just easier back when we had dumb phones?

    • +1

SIMs have been around for >20 years so not sure what smart/dumb has to do with it, but yeah I do sometimes long for the days of making a phone call by simply picking up the phone and pressing on the number buttons and green call button…

      • And actually using your voice to communicate with them…

    • if you're using telstra sim, you can always do #150# to get the number of the sim, provided that the sim is connected to the network (roaming also works).

  • i bought from ebay about 10 years ago a number that was 0405 and you pick the next six numbers.. cost was only $40 or something

well worth it, still have it

    • I signed my brother up to amaysim using the number 0468 429 924. His birthday is april 24. Didn't cost anything to do, but you have to scroll through the numbers to find a good one.

  • my most recent number i got ends with 987654

  • I make an attempt to remember my numbers and my family's at least, I do try to get numbers that are easy to memorise though, so that maybe helps. I have a problem with one of the home phone numbers because it's just totally random. But I do wonder if we just try less these days because of smartphones, heck back then I even remembered my best friends' phone numbers by heart.

  • I have just this week swapped sim and picked up a new number…..that's probably mobile number 20 in my life time, add another 20 home numbers and the numerous bank pin numbers, bike locks and employee numbers…. nah I don't even try to remember them now. I use a mini label printer and stick it on the back ok the phone and one on my driving licence.

  • I have had the same number for 16 years, so yes.

  • My parent don't but i always have i pick my own number i had it now sent 90s.

  • Most of the smart phones these days have a function called show my number..

Go to "Tools," "Settings," "Options" or another similar menu on your cell phone. Look for the "My Number" option. Your number will be displayed onscreen. This method will work only on certain phone models.

If you do not have this option, you can always call your colleague, friend, family and ask for the number .. Remember to enable show my caller ID, if you have disabled it.. This is under settings, phone settings ..

If that fails you can log on to your mobile my account and it will show your number or your monthly bill will show it..

If that fails you can always call your network provider and ask for your number..

    Hope this helps..

Does anyone go with their muscle memory for other people's number? Like, you don't remember the number per se, but your body remembers the pattern that you need to press?

    • +1
    • i use that to create password for my phone, so I can unlock my old blackberry without looking.

    • +2

      muscle memory

Not for phone numbers per se but more for pins, passwords, userids (especially the numerical ones)…

When I try to consciously recall the numbers, I draw a blank :(
