Do you remember you own mobile number

So I found out that one of the lady at work didn't remember her own mobile number despite having owned it for over 10 years. She had to call her family member to get the number. This made me wonder if this is a common thing. I remembered I struggled to call out my number in the first month. My missus took nearly a year to remember because she didn't use it often. So how about you guys, how long have you got your number and do you remember?

      • :( Same thing happens to me… It's really bad since I actually have multiple pins that I use as well.

    • Yeah I remember numbers by that too. I pretend there is a keyboard and see where my fingers move to remember the numbers. I play the piano by "muscle memory" too. Take forever to read the notes but once I memorise a song my fingers just remember the pattern. Try it!

  • I had my number for a few years but its pretty easy to remember.
I also remember my mum, dads, as well as my home number of course.

  • If you can remember your name, then you can remember your mobile phone number then, as simple as that :)

    • there's only a few ten of thousand names to select from, and they come with alphabet rule (no one has name without a vowel), not like mobile number which can be randomly among those 100 million.

I believe Ng is a valid last name. That doesn't have a vowel.

        • that's just a surname, which we has even less than first. If we count surname then most of the world's population wouldn't memorise any Greeks except themselves.

          @lgacb08:

          Bryn
          Kym
          Rhys

You obviously don't know any Welsh ;)

Edit: Granted, the y is a replacement for the vowel i, but still ;)

        • @rompastompa: Y is vowel in some cases, as you said. But my point is there are rules with alphabet character while number doesn't have that,

@lgacb08: Just supporting your point, one of the big arguments about the language acquisition is that we are born with a "language acquisition device". In short, human show this amazing ability to acquire language from very young age, where as arithmatic and numbers… I don't think they show up as early as the linguistic abilities (don't quote me on it though). Though, I think remembering phone numbers would fall more onto learning/remembering a string of random numbers, which doesn't have any rules (other than first few numbers belonging to a region or something) whereas names, at least, there are syllables and sounds that we are used to.

As a sidenote, I used to remember my old number by a rule, which was two numbers in the middle adds up to 10 blah blah.

No. Same number for the past 6-7 years but i have a terrible memory for strings of numbers.

  • "Never memorize what you can look up…" - Einstein

  • No problem remember my phone number but no one else.

Frankly I have to pause to recall my car rego.
So you know your own phone number, what about your car rego?

    • I change cars every 6-9 months so i take a photo with the plates showing and keep it on the phone. Also handy with hire cars.

    • Mine is my surname ;)

If I forget that, I've got more things to worry about.. if I can remember those things..

    • still remember my first old shitty car's rego, even its plate number before I purchased and re-registered with another plate.

  • I had a friends number that was:

    0448 448 448

    (its not used anymore tho)

  • I find it surprising for people not to know their own ph number.

Even if I didn't know it, I would save it in my own phone, not have to call family for it.

I always make a point to memorise things like my ph number and license plate.

On the other hand, I dont know my land line because I rarely use it and I don't know my license number, again because I rarely use it.

  • Many people speak proudly of their mobile numbers with their clever repetition of digits. Usually i find these to be a mouthful to understand in the first instance.

  • I've even saved my name into Contacts in case I forget my number. Back in the early days when people would ask me for my phone number and I didn't know it, my excuse for still not knowing my own number was "I don't call myself often", and then procceeded to dig through the contacts in my phone for my entry.

  • I can't even remember my age and that's only 2 digits! Seriously though I eventually memorized my mobile number but now I can't remember my landline!
