ebay seller strategies - 0.99c eBay Listings

Hi

What is the best way to sell old items quickly and at a good price on Ebay?

Should I list it at 0.99c?

Seems like those listings gets alot of bidders…

If list price is too high then it would not attract much if any attention from buyers.

How do those guys that list at 0.99c not fear it going at a cheap price, ie 1 bid only..
Are they using some shill bidders to prevent it selling at 0.99c?

I would like to sell my old iPod touch 4th gen 32gb.

  • To put it up as 99cents it has to be an item that people look up all the time. It can't be too obscure or otherwise you'll only have like one person look at it, throw a bid on, and they'll get it for 99cents

iPod touch is a pretty common item so i would think you would have no issue. Then again, if there are too many of them for the demand, you could still get unlucky.

Do an advanced search looking at 'completed listings' to see what you can expect (put it on auctions only if theres too many buy it nows.)

    • Yes, I did do a search prior to this thread..

      http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=ip…

The top listed items with most bidders all started at 0.99c.

BTW do u think these 0.99c sellers got shill bidders?

BTW my ipod is still in excellent condition cos it has always in a case and had screen protector.

So based on the traffic for this item, do u think it is safe to take a risk at 0.99c?

      • Completed auction listings (green are sold, black did not.) :
        http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40%7CR40&_nkw=ipod+…

I would say it should be fine most likely. ipods are quite popular, there was a guy on ozb who was complaining he only sold a couple random obscure DS games for 1-2 bucks but becuase no one is actually looking for that particular game on DS, they not gonna get much. for those things, its best to put as buy it now and just wait till it sells.

        Edit:
compare with 'buy it now' ended listings, someone has sold their ipod touch for over 100 bucks 8gb with silicone case. auctions seemed to average around 70-80.

Never ever sell anything as an auction. Fixed price only. See what identical items are listed at then undercut slightly. If nothing else is currently listed then research recently completed items.

    • how to get recently completed?

Don't they removed auctions that ended?

What's a do you recommend is a reasonable fix starter price for this ipod?

Some tips for a successful auction

        1. Make your auctions end preferably on a Sunday night, around 6-9PM at night, that's when most people are on eBay. Start a 7 day listing on Sunday to make it end on a Sunday.

        2. Photos. People love photos. Pictures tell a thousand words. Use a flatbed scanner if you have one, otherwise use a good camera. Take your product shots in good natural light. Make them high resolution and anchor them using HTML tags, as you should already looks like: <img src="http://i.imgur.com/DqwmyYc.png"> using the HTML editor.
use imgur as an image host if you have to.

Also I want to add making the listing with free shipping usually attract more bidders than if you charge for shipping.
So if it attracted more buyers > will increase the sale price > hopefully it will cover the postage that you will pay.

Always, ALWAYS post the item with tracking number.

        • THIS!!!!! If you are worried about scammers you can set it to only accept bids from Australia/NZ and also set it to not accept bids from people with feedback less than 2. i used to run my own ebay shop and dabbled with the 99c auctions, lost money every time. I used to run a regular auction with the starting price set at a modest profit. I normally didnt do BIN. Most times I would get 1 or 2 bids and sell around my starting point. A few times i had a runaway bid and made a packet but most of the buyers seemed pretty well researched.

Research past sales for the items you want to sell and see what others are selling for. You will find there is an unwritten 'going rate' for most common items.

If you are going to do 'free shipping' make sure you add the cost of the 'free shipping' to your selling price before you list.

    • unless the used item is a one-of-a-kind, then it would be a newbie mistake to list it as a bin (scammers delight) option only. listing it as an auction-style with a bin is the best way to drive traffic and potentially get the best price.

      • Why use a BIN with auction?

is it better just to use auction only?

  • One trick I do,
I list the item two times.
    One auction only.
And a second list with buy it now with accept best offer (put the price I am after considering the fees)

As soon as one of them sold I delete the other one. Its good way to know how much people willing to pay with the best offer option.if they are close to what I want I accept the offer.

    • but if u put an auction, once it starts, u can't delete it.

      • Actually you can. You cancel all the bids first then delete it. You need to choose a reason why you are deleting it.

        • really?

I didn't know know you can cancel bids..

That's a first time I heard of this

But if you cancel someone's bid, don't they need to approve as well?

        • See here, scroll down to Requirements. Your answers are there.
          http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/end_early.html

There's no need for approval for any kind but depending on circumstances there is a final value fee that is charged by eBay. The Final Value fee is 9.9 percent

        • @scrimshaw: I never have been charged with a fee!

careful, Your selling rating may drop.

    • Instead of listing two separate items?

Why not just combine it and add

Auction and BIN or best offer..

      • because when someone bid the BIN option will be removed.
Also you can't add best offer with an auction. It must be an auction only or with BIN.
I like to know if someone interested on my item, how much he willing to pay.

  • Start an auction at the lowest price you're willing to sell it for.

If that's 0.99c then so be it.

    • nobody is stupid to sell an expensive item for 0.99c.

But it seems to be the strategy used by some sellers, to get more interested bidders..

      • Ebay is a contract. If you put it up for auction and it sells and you refuse to sell it at that price, the buyer can neg you, Ebay can put you on the naughty list and if the buyer really wants to, they could sue you for it.

Hence why if you are not willing to sell it for 99c then don't start it at 99c.

      • I think it's a hangover from the early days of ebay - if you listed for 99c it was free, if higher, then there was listing fee. Now I think it's just final value fee, but people still hung up on that. Haven't used e-bay for a long time.

You could see what people are listing for on Gumtree - but of course no ratings system/protection there. Good if you can get someone local, and they pay cash.
