Should I Ask to Cut Rent down?

Hi guys,
I'd like to ask whether or not I should ask my landlord to cut my rent down at least $$.

when I visited this house for inspection a couple of weeks ago he told me unlimited internet will be installed soon and
So I just thought it'd be okay.
The thing what happened yesterday is he told me for some reasons that doesn't matter to me he's not able to provide me with the unlimited internet during the period I'm going to stay here. The reason was about money and the short period. Cuz he's also renting this house and it'll end in about 3months.
Anyway, so what he offered me is to use a router enabling me to use 4g from Telstra network instead. I don't know how much he's gonna pay for this per month,
Obviously 5GB given to me and even my girlfriend looks far away from the amount we use usually.
It's just 2.5GB each as you can easily see.
Apart from the amount of data, limited internet itself is not what he'd shown us when he introduced this house a few weeks ago. He should have told me what he heard from the Internet company and decided what to do. He just let me know two days later after I moved in last Sunday.he definitely had enough time to think about it.

I'm so disappointed by my landlord and his behaviour.
I'm just so panicked that I don't have no idea what I should do now.
Should I just take the router and try not to overuse it every months?
Thnx for reading guys.

  • Anything in writing?

    • If you mean sort of evidence written on paper, then no.
Is it impossible to require sth if it's not signed or done on paper?
      Thnx

      • I mean, is the information in writing: "limited internet itself is not what he'd shown us".

      • Technically, your contract can be verbal, I've gone through that (it's F!@#ing annoying to get the landlord to uphold that, but given that you provide enough information that it has occured, I think you can ask for legal supports if the landlord doesn't uphold that).

Try to gather evidences that you and the landlord had been talking about unlimited internet, i.e. emails that mentions those etc etc.

  • Cuz he's also renting this house and it'll end in about 3months.

So he's renting it too, and renting it out to you… Are you sure you're legally inhabiting the place? Does the owner/property manager know hes sub-letting the property?

    • Basically he's renting this house and I'm just a tenant at the moment.
      Sorry for making confusing sentences.

      • Is he the owner of the house or is he renting from somebody else?

        • He's renting someone's house temporarily.

          @krakby:
He might be illegally sub-letting the property. You signed a full lease agreement etc?

  • i am guessing he didnt realise how expensive it was to get phone/adsl connected for 3 months. So now he's offering wireless, but not unlimited.
Sounds like he is trying to do something.

    • Exactly. Should I stop thinking about this problem then?

      • I think so. It is only 3 months isnt it? I know its not what you thought you would have, but you also dont know how much data he is going to get you (doubt if it will be over 10-15gig though).
3 months isnt long, look for something that for sure has broadband next time (or is in the contract) dont just state broadband as wireless is classed as that, specify ADSL or Cable. (you can always type the address in Telstra site and it will say if you can get ADSL/Cable.

edit - BTW, I think Belong installs the phone line free for their ADSL (and is no contract), maybe try them now.

        • He said he's going to give me 5GB Per month.
Anyway much better after listening to others advice.thnx.

Door-knock or put a note under door of neighbours explaining your situation.
Ask if they would help you out with some access to their interwebs for a few months.
Offer to mow their lawn or something in return? (or some cash)

    • I'll consider it seriously.
      Thnx heaps :)

    This guy is being unreasonable.

The landlord already offered some reasonable alternative.

If you want to pay less rent, please be realistic.

Go away and rent some where else for unlimited internet

    • You said 'alternative' which means it's obviously different from the initial contract. And I do not think 2.5 GB per person is 'some reasonable alternative' compared to unlimited one. That's why I can even think about other solutions.
      Thnx

  • If you don't like it move out
