    • Its nice to have a dream

    • I wonder if their warranty is for 23 years then. I suspect not.

$5 on ebay for something similar.

      Link?

WiFi connected smart globes? I can only find some dodgy ones from China - which I refuse to take the chance with.

      @tightwad

"$5 on ebay for something similar."

Comments like this are really annoying, they mean nothing unless you back it up with a link or two.

  • Aldi has a varity of LED globes on sale soon…i think next week

    • +2

      but are they "smart/connected" globes?

  • Wemo stuff is awful. I have the switch and motion sensor, most of the time the apps won't detect the switch to turn it on or off. They're also really bulky.

If you want smart bulbs can't beat Philips Hue

    • my hue smart hub disconnects from the network once or twice a week even on the latest firmware.

When I first bought my wemo switches I thought the same. They can be a little temperamental with some wifi products. I was having big problems with my Billion 7800VDOX, they got better with my tp-link W8980 but still occasional drops. I've found the sweet spot with a Netgear ex6300 range extender running as an access point. It wasn't only wemo products having issues, my Fitbit Aria Scales and LG Music flow products did the same. I've bee rock solid on all products now for a few weeks. There has been regular firmware updates with the switches (the last a few days ago)so this may have helped in the early days.
I bought the Wemo light bulbs last week and love them. They are brighter than the Philips but no multi colours. They do dim down nicely. You can set rules with the Wemo app like "come on at sunset" but the real fun starts with IFTTT which has full Wemo compatibility (As do the Philips).
If your looking to get into automation the starter kit includes a wemo hub which connects to your WIFI and interfaces with the bulbs using the Zigbee mesh protocol. This is the same as the Philips and hopefully we get some of the controllers already available in the US (Smartthings) that allow lots more things to be controlled.

  • Amazon has the kit for $77 delivered, while that is probably 110V. So are the specs on dick smiths site???

    PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

    Form Factor : A19
Connector Type : Edison Screw E26
Input Power : 120V options or Max 120V~/16A/60Hz/1800W

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMLTUG0/ref=ox_sc_act_ti…

    • The product codes are different F5Z0489/ F7C033auE27. Looks like DS have simply done a copy and paste from the US Belkin site.

On top of that, after conversion and postage, Amazon works out very close to this deal.

    • The Australian model has 100-240v 50-60Hz on the Hub so should be the same for the US model. I think we use the same Zigbee frequency as the US.

  • Cannot believe this is priced more than double that of the US price. Just can convince myself to buy it. No fault of the OP thou

A lot more competition in the US. We really are a backwater when it comes to home automation products. The fact that we use a different frequency to the US for the biggest automation protocol (Z-wave) also means they have to produce products specifically for Australia, its not just a different power plug.

I have the wemo switches for over 1.5 years now and they never disconnected even once … (except when I changed my router). But I have a ac Asus router with nearly 85% reception in all areas where the switches are … so I always think that issues will depend on the network quality you have.

Can't say anything about the LEDs … but I opted for the connected bulbs from Limitlessled.com which are far cheaper at lower than 20$. (pretty good just no IFTTT)

The whole home automation thingy will still take a few years to become really mainstream … it's mainly a toy/novelty at the moment in my opinion.

  • I just picked up mine today. Bought them last week at $124.95 and used the $20off deal they had. I have one light the the kids always leave on. I am hoping this can solve the issue.

unfortunately no daylight bulb available for AU market.

  • can some one please help me, im interested to buy one.
do i need to buy the Belkin WeMo Lightbulb StartKit $125, or can i just buy one of its light bulbs for $40?

    • +1

You need the StartKit, unless you have a Zigbee controller eg Smartthings

  • LIFX are quite comparable smart led bulbs

  • These have been the same price on eBay for a least a week. On eBay the postage is cheaper, $6.95 versus $7.95 on the Dick Smith website.

I have been using Wemo switches for at least a year, and found them to be very reliable. I had 3 operating with IFTTT to make our house look occupied while we were away for 6 weeks. Only one switch dropped out of the network for the last week, other than that they were rock solid, switching on and off several times a day. Also we used a Wemo Light switch that has also been very reliable, and also worked for six weeks with no problems.
