Prison Architect Alpha on Steam US $5.99 (80% off)

100

It's exactly what you think it is.

What the developers have to say:
“Prison Architect is currently in Alpha, which means we haven't finished it yet - it's full of bugs and glitches and you're not going to get a polished experience if you buy it at the moment. What you will get is early access to a bullfrog-style Prison Management Sim that over 250,000 gamers have already thought is worth a look at.

When you buy early access we also guarantee to give you a free copy of the full game once we've finished and you'll also get monthly updates which include new features and bug fixes. But that's not all, you can also pre-order a copy of the PA art book and Soundtrack (like the game, these aren't ready yet, but you'll be the first to get access when they are launched), or buy a pack that includes the whole Introversion back catalogue (we've made some seriously awesome games). Finally, you can immortalise yourself into the game, by naming a prisoner and writing his bio. Everyone that plays PA will see your bio and know that YOU helped to make Prison Architect a reality.

But that's not all, we also want to get your feedback and comments on the game and want you to help us to direct the development process. Tell us what you like and what you don't like and what you want us to work on. We've got a great community of Prison Architect early adopters and we'd love for you to join in - just head over to http://www.introversion.co.uk/prisonarchitect/developer/regi… once you've bought the alpha.”

I was talking to someone yesterday about how I don't like Prison Architect because like most early access games on steam it just rips off the always-free Dwarf Fortress in the hope that unknowing consumers haven't heard of DF, and other people who can't decode the ASCII have pretty pictures to look at.

……But for $6 this is pretty tempting ;D

    • It's more like Theme Hospital-in-a-prison to me, which is perfectly fine. I love the fact that these old game styles are coming back now all the 80/90s nerds are old enough to make them themselves, and Prison Architect is a great example. It's a pretty great (albeit unfinished) game.

  • has it been in alpha for a long time?
i remember thinking of getting this game around a year ago

    concept sounds interesting

What kind of meth addict would pay $30USD to be an alpha tester?

"When you buy early access we also guarantee to give you a free copy of the full game"

    Oh how kind of you.

"we also want to get your feedback and comments"

So you want both my money and my time?

This looks like a waste of everyone's time and effort. There are so many great games you can buy for for less than $10 these days without them being alpha with no guarantee of a finished product. I guess I'm not the "target demographic" which must be complete morons. /rant /monday

    • Think of it kind of like a Kickstarter, but with something to actually show for it and contribute to.

That's my opinion too, though much less aggressive. I like to point out, even the devs admit that this is 'inspired' by Dwarf Fortress, a game that functions quite similar (see: identical). If you've time and effort, Dwarf Fortress is free forever and has possibly the best community you'll ever find, and absolutely well worth learning for people interested in the building/management genre.

A fantastic alternative if you're not keen on putting down $6 bucks for an unfinished, buggy game, when you can get an unfinished, buggy game for free!

Im a bit worried for this game, been early access for a long while and looks like it might go the way of spacebase df9. Get released after dev saying they cant continue to support it, blah blah blah

    • Looks like they're actively working on it, with the latest release on May 1st.

      • It's from some pretty well known developers too. IMO, it's actually one of the few good early access games on Steam.

  • I've had this game for a few months now (it had been recommended by a friend).
    The Good:
It works, it's been stable and it's fun.
I've put 41 hrs already (and my steam account is one of those ones where I've got loads other options).

    The Bad (only minor IMO):
It is Alpha and does get updates, so sometimes things change that might have altered your prison planning, sometimes new features might get introduced that don't work as expected, sometimes things get balanced/nerfed.

Overall, it's a good game and worth the $6.

    • Is it worth the $10 to get your name in it?

      • I wasn't aware this was an option. I'd say the game is worth $10 still, but I wouldn't pay extra to get your name in it.
It'd probably just be a name of a prisoner (out of the several hundred you have roaming around).

  • I played the very early beta and the bugs destroyed it for me. Worth giving it another crack?

They've gone from beta to alpha?

    • I would give it another shot, they release updates quite regularly including bug fixes and new features
