Xperia Z Won't Connect to PC After Dismantling

Long story short, I needed to replace the screen on my Xperia Z phone.

I took it apart, got to the point of replacing the screen, and realised I had purchased just the glass, which on the phone cannot be separated from the LCD unit, not sure why they sell the glass separately, as you have to buy it with the LCD already glued on. * shrugs *

At this point, I decided instead of spending more money trying to fix this two year old phone, maybe I should just buy a new phone.

Problem is, I have many photos on the internal storage that I don't want to lose. So I took the mother board which had been removed for purposes of repair, and plugged the USB cable into the MB, and then into the computer. The computer made a "new USB connection" sound, and nothing else. Then today, I tried this again, on my new laptop, and exactly the same as before (as far as I can remember).

So I decided to partially reconstruct the phone. I have reconstructed it to the point where it should be start-able, and semi-functional, minus the vibrate motor, rear camera and the LCD, everything else appears to be connected. Plugged it in again, this time, got the USB noise, and then "installing drivers" progress window (strange I don't remember it doing that this morning), let that finish, and then back to nothing.

I have tried to insert an SD card into the phone, to see if that will make anything appear, but alas.

Also, MB and battery have become very warm while plugged in, in the time I have been writing this.

I believe that all the cables I own are 'data' cables, not just charging cables, as some forums have suggested to check. As I have used them in the past.

Any other ideas of how to recover my photos, and is there something perhaps that I am missing? does the phone need to be completely functional to connect to USB? (doubt it) just looking for ideas of how to approach this.

Thanks in advance guys.

    Hi Kkuba, I've seen where the drivers for devices fail during install; that is what sounds like happened with the "new USB connection". I would check in the PC's 'device manager' (Depending on Win version; 'Start' then type 'device manager' and remove any entries it has for the Xperia). It may not have any. I would also remove any Sony programs ('Start' then type 'uninstall a prog')

    On the PC install Sony's 'Media Go' http://support.sonymobile.com/au/xperiaz/userguide/Managing-… . I don't know your Windows version, but you may also want to try to install this http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/xperia-z-d… .

    After this I would try attaching it again using a different USB cable (unlikely to be the prob) and a different USB port on the PC. I have seen where some USB devices screwed up their install on one port but worked fine from another.

    • Tbanks for your very detailed response!

      Strangely enough, I went into the device manager, and didn't find anything relating to the Xperia under USB, but one driver had an additional comment under "this device is working properly" an it said something like "you need to restart the machine to…" I can't remember the rest. I assumed it might have been to do with the driver install it did. So I restarted and windows 8.1 started installing update 120 if 120…

      Left the house with the computer plugged in and the phone plugged in too. 1.5 hours later, it's still installing this same update, so I got another idea from you, maybe I should try the old laptop (win 7) as I have the Sony PC Companion installed on that.

      Now it won't even make the 'connected' sound on this machine, tried PC companion, and it just tells me no phone detected.

      Getting a bit worried, but perhaps once the new machine starts up again I might have more success.

    thats a bugger that you didnt do the backup before you pulled it apart.

    Delete all the drivers related to the phone from the PC and reboot and start again.
    I remeber having to do a couple of times with our Z's before they worked. (I assume its Windows PC, Macs are terrible and the sony software doesnt really work)

    • Not sure how to find the drivers related to the phone? Nothing in device manager seems to correspond to a Sony product..

      • try a different usb port, sometimes a new driver will install.

        • You were correct, I plugged it into the second (of two) USB port, and the driver install window appeared again, as it did last time, but the outcome appears identical.

          @Kkuba:
          I think you'll be out of luck but can you wait until next week, my laptop has the software on it but It won't be until Monday that I can check.
          If I forget send me a pm next week as a reminder.

          @PVA:

          I'm in no rush, as I am pretty much stuck at this point, so any further help that you can provide, I would be very grateful for, and more than happy to wait.

          Thanks = )
