Incorrect Car Registration Payment (VIC)

Made a payment for my mothers car registration back in March via the Vic-roads website.

We received a letter later on that month asking if we missed the payment which also advised to ignore if payment was made. Obviously I could see the money was taken from the account and I thought nothing of it till tonight when my Mom was advised by Police that it was not paid.

Checked my bank account. Money taken. Receipt details all there… till I noticed it was the wrong car, make, color…only the year was correct. Big error on my part.

I've tried searching for solutions to resolve this mistake but just having difficulty finding anything helpful.

Can anyone advise my next course of action? Thanks.

  • Check with Vicroads. The system should not have accepted the payment if the reference no is incorrect. They may have applied the payment to a suspense account as there is no way to know who made the payment. Have the payment reference number and bpay receipt number with you. Hope it works out, regos are not cheap.

  • I did something similar by mistake once. I clicked on the wrong Bpay details while online banking and inadvertently paid the rego for a car that I'd sold 2 years earlier. Unfortunately I didn't realise until months later when I was pulled over and fined around $500 for driving an unregistered vehicle.
I called Vic Roads and was told to send a then send a letter with a print out of my bank receipts etc and they were fantastic. They reversed the payment and reapplied the amount to my existing vehicle. They also arranged for the fine/ demerit points to be reversed.

  • Thanks for the replies! Will have those details ready when I give them a ring.
