  • Better wait for Steam Summer Sale?

DRM free makes gog a win in my book

I actually like steam as a DRM, it's convenient to have everything in one place and the backup feature is nice.

Yes but I don't think you really grasp how bad that is for the consumer. If Steam revokes access to some of or all of your games, you have virtually no recourse, they can do it without warning and they don't have to offer any kind of compensation (plenty of horror stories on the Steam forums to peruse). That is the EULA/T&C of Steam. If Steam's activation servers are down or if Steam itself goes under (I remember those early days well); there's no guarantee of any contingency to make sure gamers can still make use of their library. I've also never heard of a successful Steam refund, ever; and trading games has become all but impossible.

My GOG games are mine to own forever. The installers are on my PC, they never need to be activated and anything can happen to my GOG account or the company itself and I'll still be able to install and play all of my GOG games, for as long as I want.

I've refunded games more than once without issue and gotten store credit for them.

Many of the games on GOG.com are actually incredibly hard to find copies of (legal or illegal - yes even on TPB), owing to a lot of them being old enough to be in a state of legal limbo, and secondly, harder still to get properly running on Windows 7.

GOG.com is so under-appreciated for what they do.

Also, you do have GOG Galaxy now as well, which I have to admit is a shameless Steam clone (with multiplayer/achievements/chat/friends), if you desperately need a convenient desktop client to keep track of and sync of all your games in the one place.

        • @Amar89: Steam machine launches in Nov this year and those who buy it can use their Steam library on this new console hooked up to the big picture. I will personally not buy one but these consoles may allow Steam to dominate in the gaming market even more in the future.

      • I would love to completely switch to GOG, mainly coz I'm scared Valve might flip out and do something stupid again, but GOG simply doesn't have enough games.

  • I have bought so much stuff on GOG which I havent downloaded.. I also have some games on Origin from a Humble Bundle sale that I havent redeemed yet.. Hmmm better go do that now..
