Need Help for The Good Guys Discounts

Dear the informed OzBargain Community,
I am a student and my old computer has just died. I am not going to repair it as it will cost me a minimum of $400. Therefore, i am going ot buy a new laptop. The laptop that i am planning on buying is the HP ENVY Notebook - 15-k232tx (Modern Silver). I see the GoodGuys has this for $1146 which is far cheaper than from HP themselves. None of the other major retailers seem to have this computer. I was just wondering if anyone knows how i could get some discount on my purchase. I am already going to take advantage of the TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) which is %10 discount. Any discounts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,
Bargain Muncher

You ever think of buying somewhere that offers student discounts? If you go to UNSW for example, you can buy HP computers via the student website.

And if you shop with Lenovo there's a special education pricing for their notebooks.

HP may also price match TGG, if you simply ring or email their sales staff they could work out a better deal for you. Here is their price match policy.

  • Hi Scrimshaw,
Thank you very much for your comment, it is greatly appreciated. I am in Grade 9 and my school does not have any student discounts, would you know of any student discounts that are not school directed. Thanks in advance,

  • Hi Spackbace,
That is a great price. I will try to take advantage of that! Thanks very much, it is greatly appreciated.

    • Why would you need to go to Good Guys? Why not just simply buy from the site I linked to…?

  • Hi Spackbace,
Because there i may be able to get them to beat that price. Thanks
    Kind Regards,
    Bargain Muncher

    • But I just beat that price by $70

      You got your saving

      • +1

Megabuy is terrible. Would not for 70 on a 1000+ item

      • +7

Because if he can get them to match the price, and receive the laptop that day, why not? You seem to have taken it awfully personal…

  • +2

Yes but if i show The Good Guys that price then i will be able to get an even cheaper price. I am only a student, so i am not rich!!!

      so i am not rich

      Then don't look at a $1k laptop?

    • +13

So you're a Year 9 student who's prepared to spend 1k on a laptop, but looking through your post history you can't afford a decent mobile plan?

    • +2

Nothing wrong with trying to get the cheapest price possible on something you want to buy …that is all Ozbargain is about I thought

      • +5

Yes nothing wrong with getting the cheapest price but his attitude needs some work… Maybe they don't teach that at school?

  • I am an OzBargainer for a reason, i will get the laptop at the cheapest price possible. Yes i am a student and i need a laptop to study so that i can get a good job and get rich.

Yes i am a student and i need a laptop to study so that i can get a good job and get rich.

You don't need a $1k laptop to study and do well in school. Just like you don't need a M.Benz to get you from A to B.
You have much to learn kid.

      • +1

Yeah he's upped the ante. 8 months ago he wanted a $600 gaming pc/laptop.

        • Is that a problem?

        • -1

I have already decided that this is the optimal laptop for me.

They are both over $1000, maybe dont point out those things. your advice seems great!
Yeah, again i do know best

        • -3

          @Spackbace:
Good job, you finally realised that you forgot to tell me that. You want a sticker?

        • @bargainmuncher:

I can see where and how Spackbace got the $878 AND $888 prices.
But since you do know the best, might be best to let you figure it out.

        • @Ughhh:
Point being that he should have included that in his post otherwise i was correct in saying that they are over $1000.

        • @Spackbace:
Ok i will say THANK YOU
But, i am still not going to get those computers as they are not as good.

          @bargainmuncher:

Lucky you're at the age where its still ok to be spoonfed. The discount code is clearly written on ebay page near the photo. Attention to detail! It'll be useful in the future.

        • @Spackbace:
You are mistaken the Galaxy Tab is only $164: http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-tab-3-lite-ve-8gb-wifi…

@bargainmuncher: In five years time you're going to look back at your comment history, and delete your account. lol

        • +4

          @bargainmuncher:

Excuse me! there is a dash between "spoon" and "fed", properly written as spoon-fed. Attention to detail will enlighten you of your mistake or ignorance to spelling.

Bargain-muncher, can you spot the various lapses in your attention to detail, above?
You are correct, though; 'spoon' and 'fed' are two separate words, best hyphenated, but many similar are now accepted as one.

You started out well with your post, but then descended to the level of those who sought to belittle you because of your age.

Next time - if it is at all warranted, or if they have gone to any trouble for you in finding information - thank the people in question and consider their advice, from both their perspective, as well as yours.

Continue to stay polite in response, even if you disagree. Threads seem to get very messy on this site when people don't 'rise above'.

          @bargainmuncher:

"CPU's that are .3 GHZ slower"
I have a 4.3GHz quad core. It runs at 0.74Ghz most of the time. Modern CPU's are overkill. If you really care about .3GHz buy a quad core instead of an overpriced duel core. That i7 is barely faster than many i3's. If you just want something super-fast and nice, get an ultra-book with an SSD. HDD's are slow as all hell.

          "slower ram"
Unless you’re buying a top of the line AMD APU for gaming, Slower RAM WILL MAKE NO DIFFERENCE.

          "they are uglier"
What are you looking at when you're using it, the screen or the case?

If you spend the $400 on the graphics card then your games will look pretty.

If you spend $400 on a pretty case your games will look better on a PS3. Yes, your non-gaming friends will be jelly, BUT your gaming mates won't think much of you.

This laptop doesn’t even have an SSD. If you care about looks you would be far better off with a Macbook Air (run bootcamp if you need windows).

"I will also ask for a sweetener such as a Galaxy Tab S"
If they need the sale they will offer you 6 months of anti-virus, a $2 mouse and a $4 case. If they don't need the sale they will (nicely) ask you to leave. If you make a scene they will call the police.

    • +16

      Dear bargainmuncher,

You're in year 9 mate, a $1200 laptop is going to have absolutely no effect on your job prospects. If you want to 'get rich' how about not spending so much money on an overpriced laptop used for basic school work.
Regardless, haven't you already found a price which is better than anywhere else, how much cheaper do you want it. Be realistic for the value of the product and if that is not good enough for you, you should consider purchasing something else.
Can I suggest that if you expect the community to find bargains for the various forum posts you make, you should contribute back to community or just do your own research (As simple as a few google searches)

      Kind Regards,
      Kados

At first I was impressed with the politeness of the OP, given their age. Quickly met my expectations by throwing a little tantrum. Keep it up, Kiddo!

  • Kid is getting shredded. Let's see how this plays out. My advice, get your parent's to come in store and play bluff (ie. XXXX is selling it for $XXX, can you beat this?)

  • +1

    I'm using Asus x205 that I bought for ~$200 ;)

Why buy a laptop $1000+ when I can get 13 hours of battery and a decent performance for that price? Might as well get a desktop with the remaining $800…

    • The 2GB of RAM is the only real limitation. When Asus get's their hands the Atom in the Surface 3 with 4GB of RAM it's going to be a bad day for laptops between $200 and $600.

  • +1

Do you really want to get a HP?

  • +12

Can we implement a age restriction on ozb? This kids tantrums have no place here.

    • +6

there goes half of OzB membership!

  • As only one person above seems to have mentioned, if a laptop isn't required, you could go a desktop computer and either get similar performance while spending less money (with the added bonus of being able to upgrade things at any time) or spend the same and get something better than laptops offer for the $1,000 mark.

If you have an actual purpose for the tablet you wish to get as a freebie/bonus from buying the laptop from Good Guys, then go for it. If not, I can almost assure you that the tablet will spend the first week or two in your hands, then will become less and less important until you forget where you left it, the next time you find it; battery will be dead. Providing you have a decent mobile phone that is. Between having a PC (laptop or desktop) and a decent mobile (not to mention the homework/assignments/social life you should be attending to), a tablet barely has a place, especially for a student like yourself.

It's also been mentioned that this laptop is suited for gaming - perhaps you could shave a few hundred dollars off the total price paid if you opted for a non-gaming laptop/desktop. As a student who is not rich, you should consider getting what you need and is within your budget, rather than what you want and is out of your budget.

You should be taking some of the suggestions on board instead of thinking of the 'wittiest' comebacks you can and 'trolling' everyone who stumbles into the thread.

Obligatory "is it school holidays already". :P

TL;DR - Live within your means. Don't try and get as good as or better than people at school or whatever you're aiming to do. Just live your own life at your own pace.

A 1k laptop is worth it. I bought a Macbook Pro and it's lasted 5 years, still going strong.
All my other friends who went for the cheaper $600 models regret it because their laptops are falling apart (all due to cheap components falling apart i.e. hinges/keyboards/horrendous battery life) and they've subsequently bought more expensive laptops once they've learnt their lesson.

1k on a laptop is a valuable investment. Of course, some people don't see the value but when you type notes 5-6 hours a day for 5+ years it pays to get a good laptop.

    • And if you can't afford today's $1K laptop, get yesterday's $1K laptop for $800 by exploring refurbs or $600 second-hand.

    • +1

I prefer to buy $400 laptop and change it each second year. at least I have something new each 2 years.
also what you will feel if you spend $1k on a laptop and in the second year you drop it by mistake and broke the screen? bye bye to your "expensive laptop"

      • +1

I've dropped my laptop 10x from waist height without cracking the screen because of the macbook's aluminium unibody design. My windows laptop that I dropped (which I bought at the same time as my macbook pro) cracked on it's hinge and it's been useless ever since.

I have a unique experience where I have bought both an expensive macbook and an expensive windows laptop (1.3k) at the exact same time and know the pros/con of both. In terms of sturdiness, the macbook pro trumps all.

Note: Windows laptops have become more sturdy within the last few years, but I don't know of many that have an aluminium unibody design.

        • +6

Gosh, I will never let you touch my laptop…..

        • I don't think a windows sturdiness is the problem, it's this

I've dropped my laptop 10x from waist height without cracking the screen

Forget about laptops, don't ever touch anything of mine!

        • @John:

lol both my laptops (2009) have lasted 5 yrs+ which is a fairly good record.

    • not really, I have bought hp, dell acer etc all around 1k and they usually die just after a year. My brothers macbook although a bit better, also died after 2 yrs so price doesnt always = quality. But in any case all you really need is extended warranty then you get your money back and buy another (works the best to renew things)

      • how do they die? is it through neglect or just wear and tear?

I abuse my laptops and still get at least 5 years from them. But then again I regularly maintain them (clean the fan. etc)

        • yeah I don't abuse them like you do (dropping a 15' laptop isn't the easiest thing to achieve..) but I do neglect them (I won't open them up to clean them or anything but I do use screen/keyboard protectors etc. Usually something goes wrong with them - with the recent dell I have for example - has been just 13 month (they all die right after the 12 month mark!) and the mother board died. with another I had issues with the ram, its usually something of that sort

    • +2

OP's model has a 5400rpm hard drive, not SSD, so it's going to perform like a $600 laptop anyway.

    • A MBP is a $2-2.5k laptop now. Only a few Windows models are built like a MBP, but most go after other markets, because if you want a laptop built like a MBP (and dosen't just look like one), why not just buy a MBP?

  • +3

  • TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) which is %10 discount

No, it's claiming the GST back. The GST is set at 10%. This doesn't mean you get a 10% discount.
Example: a product cost (before GST) $100. Add GST, the product then becomes $110.
A 10% refund of this would be $11.

    • -5

      Thank you Martjin,
I use this as an approximation.I called it a discount because i still get the money. Thanks though!
      Kind Regards,
      Bargain Muncher

      • You shouldn't be taking advantage of the TRS in this case.

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring in up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free, or A$450 if you are younger than 18. Families travelling together can pool this allowance (so a couple with a child can bring in a total of A$900 + $900 + A$450 = A$2250 worth of general goods into Australia without paying duty or tax). This is called your Passenger Concession.

General goods include gifts, souvenirs, cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrates, jewellery, watches and sporting equipment.

If the total value of the goods you are bringing in is greater than your Passenger Concession, including goods for which you have previously claimed a tax refund under TRS:

you must declare all of these goods
for goods where you have previously claimed a tax refund under TRS, you will need to pay that refund back
duty and tax will apply to all items of this type, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.
Penalties may apply if you don’t declare that you have goods in excess of your concession.

Learn the rules before you have to pay back the GST or slap with a fine much more expensive than what you would have save.

  • +7

If op wants to get a $1k laptop, let him. His thread is on asking where and how he can get it cheaper, not asking for laptop advice. Yet so many people here seem to mock him because he's a teenager who wants to spend that amount of money on a laptop that they wouldn't do themselves and are judging him for it.

    • -1

What gets my goat about this is that since OP is in year 9, his parents will probably be paying for the laptop. If it were his own money then go for it

      • +4

If it were his parents paying, I would still take that as a good indication that he's at least trying to find the best price. If their parents were paying, most kids couldn't care less.

I don't understand why everyone feels the need to crucify this kid, I think some guys above are being a bit slack.

      • +2

Sorry mate, but you are wrong, it is coming out of my wallet

Is that overseas trip coming out of your wallet as well m8?

        • @Kados:
          give it a break m8

        • Actually, you defrauding the Commonwealth Government with your deceptive GST refund under the TRS is coming out of MY wallet. And Kados', most likely.

        • @millhouse:
There have been many entire posts on Ozbargain dedicated to getting the maximum benefit out of TRS and all or most of them from Australians planning to bring back their TRS items. Some of them even going through troubles to get the required invoice changed to their name.
Why are so many people now becoming hypocritical sticklers about the rules?

        • @maxi:

I was actually joking more than anything, specifically at the "coming out of my wallet" part.

  • I can get good guys gift cards at 5% off thru reward gateway

    • +3

I think if you found it he will find it too. And probably he will not rest until he has.
Lots of kids that age these days cannot give a toss about saving money and will buy what they want when they want regardless of cost.
OP knows what he wants and is doing his homework and found the cheapest he can find for what he wants. And to go 1 step more he comes and asks here just to make sure there isn't another way to save a few more $$. Just in case…
      Good on him.
Give him a few more years and he will run rings around a lot of people mocking him here on Ozbargain.
And he has the attitude to do that too!!!

      • -1

OP has proven he doesn't want the best price, he wants the best price from a bricks & mortar store (see here)
So given that price is from an online store, also given the OP didnt know about staticice till I posted that earlier, it's likely Good Guys wont match it as they're just an online store.

        • All I can read is that he wants to try to have it on a price beat guarantee. Not sure how The Good Guys price beat policy is. I suppose that is what he is asking.
You seem more interested in him buying from your find and you seem not happy because he just want to use that price to get an even better price somewhere else.

        • -1

I did know about static ice actually, i also know about shob bot and get price.

        • -2

@bargainmuncher: Wow, tell us more about all the stuff you know.

  • -1

TRS is for tourist to refund the GST for a product that DOES NOT come back into Australia. While we all know people abuses the system, you are admitting that you have the intention to do it in the near future. I am sure the tax office and customs have prying eyes on the web…through ozbargainer spies…

    • +1

Does not come back into Australia within 1 year to be precise.

    • I have found that they're cracking down on the TRS, you now have to have a reasonable degree of proof and they will question you concerning the product. If its not gift-wrapped/not in its original box they will not give you the refund anymore because they know you're using it for yourself. If you claim that you are giving it to a family member overseas, they match that with what you say on your departure card I remember… Either way they're being a lot harsher, family member couldn't get away with claiming back that 10% the last time they tried with an iPad mini

You could bring the full packaging with you etc but its a hassle now imo

      • They are cracking down on TRS. Everytime when I pass by the TRS section in Melb airport, I see a few staff checking out the products of passengers along the queue line. This never happened before. Previously, all the checking (if any) used to be done at the counter at the front of the queue. One sure way of rejection is if the item does not come in the original box or bag. Too much hassle to queue up for 1 hour and hold all the crap in hand just for that little bit of money. I cant be bother these days and rather hang out at the cafe or lounge..
