        • I'm not sure sorry. I went as far as I could using paypal etc and it didn't charge me a delivery fee either in Metro Melbourne or in Ballarat.

The Logitech Z series 5.1 systems have always been a popular choice for a low cost surround setup. It's not going to compare to an actual home theatre setup but for that price it's a great option for your PC or a TV in your bedroom if you are a student.

If you are using your TV's built-in speakers, these speakers are an amazing improvement. Much of the bass is totally absent when using a TV's speakers, you will definitely notice the difference. Officeworks usually have some on display, playing some music, so you can go there and try them out.

On my first experience with them, I cranked the volume up a bit and watched a movie. I remember I thought "why is the screen so small", because to me, it felt like I was at a movie theatre. My wife was initially concerned that the sound would disturb the neighbours, but a few days later, she asked me to buy a set of speakers for the TV she normally uses.

Note that the speaker wires aren't really long enough - about 2m for the left and right speakers, which is enough, but the rear speakers' wires won't let the speakers sit behind you unless you are putting the speakers around a single chair or lounge suite. Definitely not long enough to mount the rear speakers on a wall. Four of the speakers connect to the sub with RCA connectors, so it shouldn't be hard to make your own extension cables, if you want the full 5.1 effect. I didn't bother, the left rear speaker sits beside the left speaker, with the excess wire coiled up. The right-front speaker has the controls, and connects to the sub with a multi-pin connector, so you probably can't extend that cable easily. You'll just have to keep the sub near the right-front speaker if you want to do a full-room install.

Note also that you'll need a 5.1 sound source to feed these speakers. You can use a stereo source though, and that sounds good too. The speakers come with connecting cables for a PC - three 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cables, colour-coded the same as the three sockets on your PC. If you want to connect a set-top-box, TV or DVD player, these usually have RCA connectors, so you'll need to buy RCA-to-3.5mm cables.

      • very detailed. thanks

      • Hi,
Can these speakers be used with TV? trying to find online but cant find anything for sure. Officeworks site says its for PC. I have a two year old Samsung UA46EH5306M TV, not sure if these speakers works with it.
        Thanks

They can, I've got them hooked to my TV.

The sub has two audio inputs on the back. One input is two RCA connectors for a stereo source. The other input is three 3.5mm jacks, for a 5.1 audio source. Both are mixed together inside the unit, so if you have two audio sources connected and both are running, you'll have to mute one of them to hear the other properly.

I have the stereo input connected to my TV, and the 5.1 input connected to the DVD player. This initially caused a weird echo effect when watching DVDs, because the DVD player was also sending the audio to the TV over HDMI, so the amplifier was getting two audio sources. I fixed that after a bit of experimentation. On my TV, one of the HDMI inputs has a setting, where the HDMI audio is ignored, and instead the TV's analog (RCA) audio inputs are used. I used that HDMI input for my DVD player, and left the audio inputs unconnected. Voila! The TV does not produce audio when playing DVDs, irrespective of what volume is set on the TV.

This does cause a small inconvenience - the amplifier always has to be turned on when I want to hear the audio from the DVD player. It also means that the TV's volume control doesn't have any effect when watching DVDs, and you can get a nasty surprise when you switch the TV back to TV-viewing mode.

Note also that many TVs do not have an analog audio output, not even a headphone socket. My TV has an optical digital audio output, so I bought one of these to turn it into a stereo analog signal to connect to the amplifier. The mains plugpack isn't needed, I use the TV's USB jack to power the converter:
          http://www.eachbuyer.com/digital-coaxial-toslink-signal-to-a…

If you use one of the above digital-to-analog converters, you may find that your TV puts out a constant volume level on the digital audio port, and this is not changed by varying the TV's volume control. You'll have to use the knob on the right-front speaker to vary the volume. You can then turn the TV's volume down to zero, so you aren't hearing the tinny sound produced by the TV's speakers.

I measured the power consumption of my unit, and it is about 8 to 10 Watts, it made no difference whether there was loud music or silence. That works out to be about $23 of electricity per year (at 26 cents per kWh here in QLD), possibly more in other states, so it'd probably be worthwhile investing in one of those smart powerboards, that will cut power to the amplifier when the TV is off. Or you could save electricity the OzBargain way, by turning the power off at the power switch when you aren't using it.

        • Also, if you want to see how these speakers perform for the lower frequencies, I recommend the track "Addicted to Bass" by Puretone. About 80 seconds into the song, there is a very-low-frequency counter-melody, with some frequencies so low that I can't hear them. I can show that the speaker is producing them, by holding a piece of paper (like a shopping docket) in front of the port (hole) on the subwoofer. When the low frequencies are produced, the paper vibrates very noticeably, and if you hold it too close to the port, it will "buzz" against the front of the case.

        • [@Russ]: Thanks for the detailed explanation. I ordered one, which is backordered (approx 14-20 days). will see how it goes.

  • I stopped using computer speakers years ago now just use headphones only turn my 8 year old 530s on like one every few months.

  • This is a good price for these speakers, I bought some several years ago for around the same price from a deal posted here.

This model has been around for a long time now, which I guess demonstrates just how popular they are, but they are also a little dated connectivity wise.

I paid $49 for this unit nearly 3 and half years ago, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/59210. Why is it $60 in 2015, only God knows.

    • Have not seen a price that low since, I wonder why they sold them so cheap

      • Pretty crazy. The market value hasn't gone down for this fantastic(for the money)set.

        • Yeah I wish I saw that post :)

exchange rate 3.5 years ago was 1.1 AUD to US $1
      now its 0.77 = 1.42 * 49 = $70.

So ignoring inflation its $10 cheaper based on our AUD buying power.

All we need to do is jump start our minerals and resource sector and our money will buy more.

  • I am looking for speaker/soundbar for my TV.
    I found this http://www.dicksmith.com.au/soundbars/philips-sound-bar-htl2…
    $99-$25 - $74.

Any recommendation between Z506 and this soundbar?

    • z506 has a proven track record. It's been around for probably half a decade, if not more and is still a favourite to this day. The soundbar however, has some mediocre reviews on amazon.

sheesh… picked up Z506 around 3 years ago for $49. Probably the best price EVER for the Z506… pretty good set of speakers even if you just want to use it as stereo+sub 2.1~
