[VIC] Switch to Simply Energy and Get 16 Gold Class Village Passes / 24% off Electricity Plus Gas Too

50

Offer by Simply Energy offer to switch to them. Get 16 Gold Class Passes / 24% off electricity usage and supply
Get 14% off Gas usage. Don't know what their rates are with electricity but 24% off the supply charge too is worth looking closer. Not many retailers do that anymore, not mine anyway, it's usually only usage.

  • Hmmm, is this really a freebie? If you have to outlay cash to qualify, then I think not.

    • I thought I classified it under Deals. I don't know why it's appeared as a Freebie.

  • Victoria only. Please put in title OP.

You should mention that you only get 2 tickets every 3 months

    • thats generally the time when a good movie comes out

Thanks jv, that likely means this offer is just to try to keep you as a customer when they raise prices (slightly) more than competitors during the next price rise.

Also means the actual 'bargain' is around $6.66 per month if you bought $10 tickets at the same frequency (or $16.66/m if you really wanted gold class).
Note: It's possible there's no bargain at all, check their rates.

      • Haven't checked their rates, and there didn't seem to be expiry date. In any case, most contracts tie you down for 2 years without penalty. Mine with AGL does, so I can't even consider this offer, I did not get offered so much as a frozen chook when I switched to AGL so gold movie passes seem a little more enticing. I'm not sure how this stacks up but thought it was worth considering since this company claims to be all Australian owned if you are patriotic.

        • Under energy regulations in VIC, I don't think contracts can be enforced, but you'd have to check with AGL or perhaps a higher authority (do note most providers aren't charging the small connection/move fees these days).

  • Hm… I don't have gas, so 1 ticket every 3 months. How long are those valid for? The question is - can I wait to collect 2 and go with somebody?

    • "You will receive an email every 3 months (for 2 years) for each energy account (electricity/gas), on the Simply Gold Class offer. Each email will contain a unique activation code which you will need to use within a 6 month period. Once activated, you will have up to 12 months to use your Gold Class movie ticket."

      • Thanks :)

  • simply energy is one of the worst door knocker with many of its sellers using dodgy tactics. They used to have [ethnic group] who came to the house, pretended to be someone from government/distributor and tried to 'take a look' of your energy bill and would do some dodgy transfer, And just last week I got one of their European WHV employer trying to use the same tactics, the only thing better about him was he was wearing his employee id and not trying to hide it from me.

    • Seems like every door knocker nowadays is an ethnic group except the Mormons and Jehovahs. In my suburb at least, this is the case. My blood boils when they insist on seeing my bills. To me it's a violation of my territory and privacy. They are told to trudge out as fast as their legs can carry them as soon as they ask to see my personal bills

  • I signed up with Momentum years ago, and have yet to find another provider whose rates come even close to mine. All those companies that offer 'amazing' discounts for paying on-time, direct debit etc. are generally just charging way too much in the first place. For example these guys charge over 25 cents a day more for their daily supply charge, and as best I can tell at least 5 cents per kWh. I'd be better off staying where I am and buying my own ticket in this instance.

So whilst I appreciate the post op, if you're in Victoria I highly recommend checking out Momentum, kids.

    • Compare Simply rates to mometentum but include the 24% discount on rate and daily supply (most others only over discounts on rates and not daily service charge - Simply do!) I can't say if it's better based on your distributer but for me it works out 14% better off with Simply. Free gold class tickets are just a bonus.

Also never generalize what ur rates are like to anyone else's because youlll find everyone's rates are different for so many reasons in VIC. Everyone should research their own based on where they live and make an informed decision whether to swap. I did and I'm better off than I was with momentum.

      • Oh I know, that's why I simply suggested to check it out and didn't say something like "they are cheaper for everyone". Indeed they are cheaper for myself and a few of my friends, but we're all pretty much in the same area, so I can appreciate that it wouldn't be the same for everyone.

As an aside, I appreciate Momentum's customer service and their "green" power and would be happy to pay a premium for both, anyway.

        • 16 gold class tickets cost ~$600 as well. Thats $300 worth per year. Makes this a very attractive deal. I agree momentum r a solid company with good service but there are better options out there

  • I actually signed up to this deal when it first came out, I think it was around November 2013. At the time I was with DoDo Energy, I did a calculation on the rates based on my average usage and it came out to be about a few dollars more expensive every quarter. But because you get the double gold class movie vouchers, obviously it works out to be cheaper. Can't comment on the customer service as I haven't needed to use it often, also not sure about how competitive are the rates at the moment as I'm in contract and haven't really explored switching just yet. You get one voucher for signing up to electricity and one for gas, so if you only sign up to one of them, obviously you only get one voucher per quarter instead of two.

RACV give 30% off electricity and 16% off gas, both usage and supply charges.

So better on both accounts than stated here. You would need to weigh up the extra 6% on electricity and 2% on gas. The above states the gas discount is only on usage, but I suspect it is on usage and supply. If not it is doubly bad.

Alternatively if you have an ABN, you can say you have a home office and they give you 30% off electricity and 20% off gas. I have this offer and it works out the cheapest for me in Victoria. I built a spreadsheet using actual rates of each supplier. Also you can use the Victorian energy comparison.

    • Which suburb are you in. Can you share this spreadsheet with us? thanks

  • This happened to be an interesting exercise. I don't know whether I hate shopping for school shoes or utility bills more but I can never resist a 'better' offer. Therefore I had to lookup Momentum's latest rates and calculate the exact cost had I been with them during my most recent 1/4 ly bill. After all discounts whether only on usage (AGL only usage/ Momentum showed fixed 2 tier charges with and without GST), and then also adding back Supply charges, GST 10% and the usual Maths, it turns out I pay $21 more on that particular bill if I was with Momentum. Don't know about the next 3 quarters whether the savings would be consistently like that. I guess I shall stick with AGL as I've chopped and changed from Energy Australia and Power Direct. BTW….I am receiving 40% off my electricity usage with AGL (not the fixed Supply Charge) and 32% off gas (also not the Supply Charge) Anyone also got such a good deal? However, since it's only $21 savings to Momentum, it's just not worth the trouble sometimes changing about. One family meal at Macca's costs more.
