Who cares? If I like I can drink a gosh darn raspberry UDL. Just like a woman can drink a fine scotch (with a small amount of water) if she wants to.
      Screw the rules!

    • Yes, fellow ozbargainers. Let us neg this individual for the crime of insulting our taste in rum. Let us punish him with our mighty powerful neg votes. He will dare not speak ill of rum again when he feels the wrath of our neg votes.

I'm saving all of my negs for jv. :P

So why does everyone hate JV? I think I missed the memo.

        • +3

@railer: I don't understand either. Years ago JV was revered for his witticisms and sharp comments. Now it seems a lot of his humor is not appreciated by the wider, dumbed-down audience. Since they don't get his jokes or perhaps they are too sophisticated or subtle, they misinterpret it as JV being a troll or a nuisance.

        • -2

          @endotherm: "dumbed-down audience."
Australian education system is rapidly going the same way as "Merika edumication sistim"

        • +1

          @endotherm: JV is a SHE…

        • +4

@railer: StewBalls is of course joking. But the reason you see people turn on JV is just plain old Aussie bullying. It works like this - give someone a good kicking if there is a gang of you. Don't stop to ask why, just join in if you see other drongos taking part. Make sure you're not the first or the last though. You might get caught and take the blame for everyone. But as long as there is a group you can be real 'brave' and join in. I, for one, enjoy JV's wit. And I shall defend the honour of JV and of spiced rum till my last powerful neg vote. As God is my witness. Never allow anyone to say rum is a lady's drink. Never.

        • +2

          @Wonderman: Amen to the rum.

Understood. I thought there was something more sinister afoot than just small minds.

    • +1

I'm not sure what that got to do with the bargain?

      • -1

Absolutely nothing, but it goes a long way towards revealing the respondent's self obsessed confirmation bias type of personality.

    • -1

What do you mean I can only neg a comment once!?!?

Great winter drink - 3/4 pint of Young's Double Chocolate Stout, 2 shots of black spiced rum and a hot espresso shot. Try it - video instruction

      • +1

This from a bloke who's name is a portmanteau of Dave and Stavros!

By the way, portmanteau means blend.

    • A five minute video to help us follow that recipe? Can you also help out with one around the 2-minute mark for a glass of tapwater I'm gonna prepare later this afternoon? ;)

    • +15

Thanks for your input! I am moving to beer from now on. Although I dislike the taste of beer, your opinion on what makes something a "lady drink" has had a huge impact on my life

    • +10

Probably just all the people reacting to you being a douche.

      So what do you drink?

      btw. I haven't negged you.

      • +5

Can vouch for that reasoning being the one behind me negging him.

YES! We shall smite all those who make derogatory comments about our rum. Never again will they show their faces and speak wrongly of rum. They will feel the sting of our neg votes in their heathen behinds as they flee the scene of the deliverance of their poisoned words about rum.

Well the only person here making claims about manliness is yourself; perhaps you posting here and denigrating other people's choice of drinks as being "too girly" is actually a ruse to project your own insecurities.

    • I'm negging you because trolling from your mothers basement is not manly.

    • Nah just laughing at your obvious identity issues.. you couldnt be older than 15 surely

    • It's actually not that manly to worry about what others think of your drink…

    • What's darker than black?

      • +2

        Dark Black

      • +6

        Rich Black

        C:100
        M:100
        Y:100
        K:100

        • I think that ink coverage is way too high. You'll have drying issues

        • +1

          How is that blacker than

          C:0
          M:0
          Y:0
          K:100?

        • @endotherm: It's not "blacker" and black. It's just darker ;)

      • Advanced black.

    • +4

I've tried dark rum, IMO it doesn't taste as nice as black spiced rum.

So I'm guessing in your manly man world of chopping down trees, not grooming yourself and not showering for days on end, that having flavour = woman's thing.
      Is VB your staple beer?

I'm not wound up, you came into a thread and started insulting people, I think that's douche behaviour.

      • -7

No, cant stand VB and dont drink much beer but when I do its anything Squires, Beer Lao, Tusker or Saigon Green.

        Insulted, gee you girls need to grow a pair (;

  • +1

Edit: This is the same price as the basic Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum.

The original spiced gold isn't rum - and it doesn't claim to be.

A premium spirit based drink with Caribbean Rum, Spice and other natural flavours

    • -1

hence why the gold is better, it's not entirely rum

    • +1

I have fixed it for you.

    • +3

By golly you're right. Although to be fair it's easy to get confused when it has the word rum about 17 times on the bottle.

  • This has a weird medicine-like taste compared to the standard Captain Morgans. So if you like standard Captains, I don't recommend this.

    • That'd be the taste of spiced rum!
If this was NSW as well I'd stock up.
I've gone through a few bottles in a row of Kraken but I think I prefer this.

      • It may be the flavour of dark spiced rum but not gold/light spiced rum. Captain Morgan Gold, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Buckeye Spiced Rum all taste similar without the medicine-like taste.

  • I am a newbie, never tasted rum before.

Do you think I should try this brand as an initiation? Any other particular rum Ozb recommend for beginner?

    • -1

Inner circle is a fantastic choice and probably the best bang for buck money can buy IMHO
Captain Morgan black (without the spice) is another that is pretty good for the price
Bundaberg is about as flavorsome as petrol, which is a lot cheaper/litre.

      • Im with you on Bundaberg, horrendous stuff. Beenleigh 5 year is pretty awesome if you want to stay with an aussie rum.

        • +1

Try Inner Circle then, hard to get at times but well worth the look.
Story goes that it was the exclusive drop for Colonial Sugar Refining (CSR's) Company’s board of directors and a handful of its prized clients and was made at Beenleigh until they went (from memory) into receivership many years back.
Again from memory Inner Circle grabbed the oak casks and was getting the rum from Fiji, I think from the bounty rum distillery.
DM's page says its Australian again but pretty sure it still comes from Fiji, maybe just bottled here.
Yep, looked at the last of my stash and they say product of Fiji, but they are a few years old now and green dots as well.

        • @Davros: It's made at Beenleigh again now, they reopened the distillery a few years back.

      • I really didn't enjoy Inner Circle at all. Tasted pretty rough compared to some other entry levels like Mt Gay, Appleton, etc.

        • -1

          Each to his own
I considered Mt Gay and appleton to be very overrated and very underwhelming.

      • Bundaberg might be light on flavour, as you imply, but perhaps it would be a good choice for an initiation? As a strong flavoured rum could be off-putting. No???

        • I never said bundaberg was light flavored, unless you consider petrol light flavored

  • Great price. I wasn't really a rum/spiced rum fan before I tried this.

  • +1

Way better and cheaper than that $1200 rip off whisky :)

  • +2

Thanks op, I now have a weekend date night with Captain Morgan - my favorite date night indeed!!

  • Wish we got Captain Morgan Private stock here. Havnt tried this one yet but the private stock I got on a cruise was awesome.
    Shame this isnt in QLD.

  • sorry OOT
but, can we claim TRS if our purchase is more than $300?
    thx

    • +1

requirement for TRS is to export the goods, thats 9 bottles.
unlikely that anywhere you'd be going would allow 9 bottles in, so would likely be confiscated.

  • What's the best way to have this? Straight?

I've never had spiced rum before so have no idea on the best way to enjoy it.

    • +1

Try some neat, maybe in a warm glass.
      Or on the rocks.
Could try with a small squeeze of lime.

If none of the above work for you, then try some with some cola.
      There is also Vortex99's suggestion

      • Cheers!

  • I prefer browsing ozbargain while drinking Havana Club Añejo Especial Rum (mixed with Pepsi max and a slice of lime) and puffing on a Cuban cigar

  • +3

Bought so much of this rum that the Wife had to pack some into her horse & carriage! Couldn't fit it all in my canoe.
