Are we excited or are we feeling meh?

Personally I'm feeling meh about it (INCOMING ENORMOUS NEG TRAIN). I knew it was going to happen, we all did, and the best part about E3 is being surprised about new games or sequels. The trailer that's out… Well, it really doesn't look like anything spectacular. Nothing we didn't see in Fallout 3. Hopefully they fix their dead-eyed NPC's that they copy and pasted from Morrowind all the way to Fallout New Vegas (Realize that was Obsidian, but they used what they were given). At least the world looks nice, they look like they're going to use next gen as an excuse to update their decade old visual techniques. Which is a very good thing.

Unfortunately, with big sequels these days, they normally make a cool IP that really stands out. Then the next one does amazing strides for the franchise, pushing above and beyond everything that the first did, with so many new mechanics and ideas. Then the next game is just that again because it sold good. (EXAMPLES: Far Cry 4, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, CoD in general. None of these games are inherently bad, but they rest on the laurels of their predecessor). Is this just going to be more Fallout 3 with prettier wastelands?

I'm just starting to lose trust for Bethesda after Elder Scrolls Online. Are they going to force multiplayer into Fallout 4? Are they going to wait 2 months after its release and make a "Fallout Online"? Are they going to keep in the absolute bullshit 'cinematic finishers' that all but destroyed Skyrim's combat? "Oh you're at 25% HP, which is actually 7 more hits, but WHOOPS LOL DRAGON GETS TO DO A CUTSCENE KILL ON YOU, trololololololol". Well if they can fix how the 3rd person looks and plays, then they can do anything and I'll get off their back about it forever, lol.

    • Nothing have come out yet, other than the trailer which doesn't really show the gameplay, so I think you can't really say it's going to be recycled version of FO3 or F:NV. Games in the franchise obviously need some similarities between the games, as it is a sequel. Unless they show that nothing has changed within the game mechanics or something like that, I don't think we can say, "nothing has changed". I hope they change the engine though, it did have a lot of limitations, so I've heard. That's why the ballistic fists couldn't consume shotgun bullets per attack (apparently). I am not even sure whether Gamebryo engine supports the next gen consoles either.

Most of the things that you are complaining about is about Elder Scrolls series so I cannot really comment (I liked Skyrim, but haven't played any of the older games in the series).

I am excited, as much as I worry about them f!@#ing up one of the franchises that I like.

Didn't neg you btw, never liked negging on the forum.

      • Its been 5 yrs. Over the space of 24hrs I think the combined youtube hits are over 10 million.

Clearly the demand is there. I dont have high expectations simply because I think a good story, the same mechanics and bit better gfx is all I require and it looks like thats met.

        Bring on Boston.

        • I am excited as well. I am curious on what they'd do with the Commonwealth. :) Though, I'd probably wait till the GOTY edition (hopefully).

      • Most of the stuff I was complaining about was the Elder Scrolls, yes, but more specifically, Skyrim. And Bethesda's usual style is to just apply a different skin and universe to the same engine. So, yes. Engine upgrades or a must, otherwise it'll just feel like the infamous "Skyrim with guns"

  • As a fan of Fallout series, I am excited. I am hoping that it's not one of "We are running out of money, let's milk one of the popular series for quick cash". As much as I liked Fallout New Vegas, I personally disliked the feeling of the game being rushed in development, i.e. supporting Caesar's Legion was pretty much an option that not many took because you lose companions, etc. They could've added more Caesar's Legion content. Also, I prefer what Fallout 3 had, in terms of the dungeon design in general. I personally thought Fallout 3 had more creativity and time spent on each of the places you could explore (as much as I hated the subway as it's confusing as hell).

That being said, I am generally excited. I personally liked Fallout New Vegas, even though it didn't improve as much as I would've expected from a sequel (It felt so much like a DLC or an expansion pack). I hope to see more improvements on Fallout 4.

Sorry I am not a follower of the series, but on the topic of Fallout 4, I posted this deal on ChoiceCheapies today (GreenManGaming 23% off coupon code until tomorrow evening), and found that for Fallout 4 pre-order on GMG:

VPN might be needed to load the pricing for other countries. Yes we are paying 50% more than that island across the Tasman!

  • Trailer and game look good but nothing new or different to fallout 3 so far, will wait till we see more before I make an opinion.

    • Fallout New Vegas 'looked good but nothing new or different to fallout 3' and yet that won GOTY awards…

I'm not expecting some kind of revolution.

      • Yeah, F:NV was not that different from FO:3 in terms of game mechanics (i.e. Many of the game assets from FO:3 were still in the game, like the Enclave Power Armour and assets for Railway Rifle + more). What I liked about F:NV that were different from FO:3 were faction system (even though it was limited in that pretty much nothing was there for Caesar's Legion) and links to the orginal Fallout series (Fallout 2 references like reference to New Reno, Cassidy etc, not just being in same setting). Though be fair, they only had around 18 months to develop the game, which did end up cutting a lot of Caesar's Legion area (So I've heard). So I am holding some hopes for better/more contents.

  • Its impossible for people who have played Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, NV and the DLC not to be moved by this… its sad because I know Bethesda realises the 20yrs history of Fallout so they made the trailer to appeal to fans… its fanservice

But man, the music, the art, the wasteland, vertibirds, Mr Handy… its all there

I'm actually more excited about this than GTA5.

  • +1
  • From bethsoft.com

The Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition will be available through pre-order in the coming days and retails for $119.99 (US), €129.99 (Europe), £99.99 (UK), and AUS $189.95 (Australia). Supplies are extremely limited so players are encouraged to pre-order through their preferred stores today.

  • does anyone want to speculate on the video card needed?

I have a 7870 but might move to the new AMD shite coming out any day now.

Fallout doesnt look to be that graphically intensive and at best I only want FHD or 1,920 x 1,200 but would like 60fps.

    • I hope it doesn't require better GPU than 7850. Though, I am getting the feeling that the game is not graphically intensive (though knowing Bethesda, they probably f!@#ed the optimisation up).

  • Crafting looks really good. Anyone going to get the Pip-Boy Edition?

    • I know that GOTY edition will be so much better valued, but f!@# it's tempting.

    $120 for this? nah

you stick your phone in it so its just a plastic cuff with a square hole

but saying that, apparently your phone can act as a 2nd screen for your game???

    hmmm

that's kind of a game changer

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH8HGslrINU

    yeah this is quite revolutionary

they never had anything like this before so knowing Beth, its gonna be buggy as fook

    • "Again, it just works."

      • riiiight… just like how any of their games "just works" on ps3

        fool me once…

        • :P I've heard that if they emphasise it more than 2 times, they are bs'ing. :P

I don't know, it'd be interesting. I've seen similar concept done on mods (not to extent where you scrap things but building your own settlement), it should be interesting at least. Probably will make few questline becomes messed up and unfinishable. Ah, the typical Fallout experience.

        • to be fair, i wouldnt play this on console

the definitive experience is on a high performance pc with a 24" plus screen

i never found fallout 3 or NV to have much in the way of broken quests

i also wonder how come they havent show any DLC yet, i mean what modern game does not have a ton of DLC?

        • @tonyjzx: There were few (they've fixed it eventually, but F:NV, Veronica's questline and ED-E's questline were very buggy on release). The infamous Vault 22 elevator bug as well (that teleported your companions to you when you use it, which ironically helped bypassing a lot of bugs associated with companions). I'm a PC gamer (no, I don't think it's the "master race", I simply bought a PC because I needed a new one to begin with), so I think at least, I can expect a lot of mods that utilises new functions :)

Fallout Shelter, iOS (Android version is not out yet).

Not sure whether it has some sort of links to Fallout 4 or not (as in, will it unlock items in Fallout 4 or something like that). But I thought it was at least interesting for Fallout fans.

  • I played a few hours of Fallout Shelter, it seems very 'pay-to-win'. If you aren't buying those lunchboxes it will likely be a slog.

That is a shame because the game itself doesn't seem bad, it looks very good on my iPad.

  • I'm not sure why companies still stagger the release of iOS and Android apps. Is iOS more profitable, or easier, or it's just a case of resource allocation?

    • +1

iOS is definitely more profitable. Absolutely. There's an article somewhere about how somewhere around 80% of the sales from Monument Valley came from iOS in its release week. Plus, Apple can give a nice hefty bag of cash to those games with a certain amount of hype that are willing to give exclusivity rights.

It's also because, with iOS, you only have to get your game working on 2 to 5 devices max, but with Android, you need it to work over hundreds of builds, ecosystems and system specifications. It's why you see people in the Android store giving 1 star for games that don't work on their super obscure, unknown Android device.

      • Thanks for the insight. So it looks like the ball is in Google's court to ease the process for such a multitude of devices.

      • Apple's Metal API was probably also a deciding factor here. I don't think Android has anything comparable to it. FS for Android will probably be made with OpenGL ES.

  • I hope Fallout 4 follows the established canon and universe of 1, 2, and New Vegas a whole lot more. So many plotholes and inconsistencies in Fallout 3 (D.C. being a barren ruin 200 years later, despite massive civilisations forming in Boston, California, Midwest, the overly convenient Vault 87 Super Mutants, the Brotherhood of Steel being the saviours of the Wasteland rather than violent hoarders of Pre-War tech, and the whole Little Lamplight cringe-fest).

New Vegas also did right by having the factions and reputations systems rather than the stock-standard "Very Good" or "Very Evil" karma choices in F3. Made for more satisfying role-playing and the multiple endings at the end of NV, depending on your choices.

  • Necroing an old post isn't my thing, but I think this fits here more than anywhere else. :P
The minimum required spec and recommended spec have been revealed, that said, fml I barely make it to the minimum spec (because of the GPU).
Though some people were saying that it's likely to be based on running it on the high resolution, so I am banking on that (Please let my rig be good enough for 1080p).

    Minimum Spec

    Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required)
    Intel Core i5-2300 2.8 GHz/AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz or equivalent
    8 GB RAM
    30 GB free HDD space
NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti 2GB/AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB or

    Recommended Spec

    Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent
    8 GB RAM
    30 GB free HDD space
    NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent

    • Posting specs in the official topic makes more sense than creating a whole new one. You might get to 1080p but whether or not you can run it @ 60fps is another story.

Bethesda's Youtube channel has been doing this great video sereis based on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system. It is quite good.
      https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvZHe-SP3xC7DdOk4Ri8QBw

      • I am banking on the fact that I have everything else at recommended spec (well almost, i7 4770k). So GPU is the only thing that I have that's sort of below the minimum recommendation on (HD 7850 instead of 7870). So hopefully, it's based on 4K gaming.

  • Yeah built a new rig with half the motivation to play this at launch

    • Do share the specs. :) I don't think I will jump in at launch, gasmes like this tend to have quite a few bugs. I'll let y'all be the guinea pigs for me :D

  • Just got an email from The Gamesmen saying that my order has shipped! Keen :]

    • same :)

  • Just received and activated my OzGameShop CD Key for Fallout 4. Pre-download, come at me.

Fallout 4 app that lets your portable device interact with Fallout 4 on your Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or PC.

Bethesda made a big deal out of it, I hope it is as good as they hyped it to be :D
