20% off GPS @ JB Hi-Fi. TomTom GO5100 for $279.20

80

JB HiFi is having a 20% off GPS sales both online and in stores. They also have the new TomTom range (GO510/610/5100/6100) in stores so if you're after a new GPS now might be the time to buy!

I personally bought the TomTom GO5100, price was $349 and the sale brought it down to $279.20. Given that it was released around the end of April, it's a pretty good deal!

Online stores doesn't have the new TomTom range yet but they do in store. Best to call ahead to check stocks if you're after one.

  • So how does this work any better than my phone or tablet that has free nav app (scout) installed?

    • I don't reply get why standalone GPSs exist anymore.

In NSW, P1 licence holders aren't allowed to use phones even if they're in a mount.

        • NSW, you're crazy.

        • But I can read a UBD and dick around with my stereo..

        • That's an insane rule, if it's true!

      • I don't like the idea of having my phone mounted in the sun for a good period if time (for my car the best position is in direct sunlight)
The glossy reflective screen is also not ideal, most stand alone GPS units have a matte screen.

      • Speed camera locations? Speed notifications? School zone alerts? Google have recently also been mucking around with the Maps app and takes ages to update after a turn thus resulting in a missed turn, wasted fuel and time.

        • Speed camera locations? Speed notifications? School zone alerts?

Many GPS apps include this. For much cheaper than a dedicated GPS unit.

Because believe it or not, there are a lot of people out there who don't have smartphones

A basic smartphone is cheaper than a GPS, yet does a lot more. It's not 2007 anymore, smartphones are cheap as chips. There was a Windows Phone on here last week that was $29 that people where buying to use solely as a GPS unit.

        • @PainToad:

I don't give a rat's about the cost of a smartphone, I'm just not interested in having one and don't need it. I have a basic mobile phone in case of emergency and recharge it every 6 months with the minimum $10 recharge (gives you an idea of how much I DON'T use it LOL) - it's small, light and quite sufficient for the odd call or text which is all I need it for. I used a smartphone recently in the US and wasn't overly impressed - my husband had an inexpensive Samsung Galaxy he'd purchased on a previous trip, it was locked to a US network and we just reactivated it on a prepaid plan when we got over there so we could use Uber etc. The experience of using that phone put me off the idea of EVER getting a Samsung smartphone LOL. Husband bought an older refurbished iPhone about 6 months ago, and whilst he likes it, he's found he hardly ever uses it anyway and almost always has the data turned off because he doesn't need it.

So you'll pay more for a GPS unit that does less. Sorry, makes no sense.

        • @PainToad:

Makes sense to me that I don't have to lug around a phone that's 2-3 times the overall size/weight of my current phone, just on the off-chance that I might want to use a GPS function a couple of times a year, when I can have a small, light, convenient basic mobile that suits my needs, a phone plan that hardly costs me anything and a standalone GPS I can use on the few occasions I need it and which can sit in the drawer the rest of the time..

        • @SimbaGirl:
You missed the point. You can buy $29 phone that functions as a GPS. Keep using your old phone if you want, don't put a sim in the new one and keep the smart phone in the glove box and use solely as a GPS. For a fraction of the price.

Because believe it or not, there are a lot of people out there who don't have smartphones! I don't have (or want or need) a smartphone, and am quite proficient at using a street directory LOL, but there are occasions when a GPS is useful (e.g. I'll be hiring a car in Sydney later this year so easier with a GPS to get around) so I bought a basic TomTom through this sale yesterday, which cost me little more than it would have to hire one with the rental car for the week. Will also be able to use it later this month as my mechanic has moved to premises on the other side of Perth, so will be dropping my car down there for the first time soon and having to do so in peak hour traffic, so the GPS will come in handy!

  • Garmin 2597 for $121.60 is a great unit and a great buy. Got mine for $101 using a 20% off voucher from a previous deal.

I was not a fan of the TomTom 500 which required a connection to your mobile phone to receive traffic data. Not sure if the same applies to the new model TomToms.

    • The one I bought 5100 has a built in sim card so no need to connect your phone. Just boot up and go! Also has free lifetime maps, traffic and speedcams.

Thanks to your post. I bought the 6100 model with a price match at Harvey Norman. It's great how they now have lifetime worldmaps. AMEX gives a $50 credit for a $300 spend at Harvey Norman. It works out really cheap.

        • Just calculated and wow you did great man! bought a 6100 for the same price I bought my 5100! Wish I could use my dad's AMEX to take advantage of these great credit backs :(

  • I wanna get the tomtom 5100, but waiting for a better deal.
