  • The only reason I bought an ASUS ROG Ranger Motherboard was because the Gryphon Armour Kit was too expensive to use on the gryphon mobos. Damn it! ROG is still the best, though. :p
Asus has some pretty awesome software and hardware in its ROG lineup.

THe main difference is that the Gryphon are designed to last a lot longer, mainly due to their fancy Japanese high voltage capacitors.

  • I am looking to upgrade my i5 (2nd gen) to i7 (4th gen) CPU.
Do I need a new mobo? Or can I take out the i5 CPU and apply a new layer of thermal paste for the i7?

If I need a new mobo, is the Gryphon Z97 mobo ($200) any good?

    Thanks

definitely you will need mobo as their sockets are different.

      • Thanks. I will check to see my if current mobo is 1150 pins (Haswell Refresh)…I think it might be the original Haswell 1155 pins :-(
If so, then I might as well jump to the X99 (Haswell-E).. but then I will have to also change my RAM :-(

    • Upgrading for what? For most uses you won't find much of a performance difference between those CPUs. I'd at least wait a couple months till the 6th gen CPUs come out.

      • I am currently on the Intel Core i5-2400.
I would like to upgrade to the i7-4790.

So I am going from LGA1155 to LGA1150.
So I just need a new mobo?

I am a dev. I need the extra CPU power for my compilations..

With the 6th gen CPUs (X99), I would also need to change my RAM (32GB) and since the 6th gen CPU have slower clock speed, the performance gains over 5th gen CPU are not great?

x99 (Socket 2011) isn't actually 6th gen, it's the high performance variant of Haswell. The motherboards are more expensive, uses (expensive) DDR4 and the chips cost a bomb but it has great performance since the chips are unlocked, have HT and up to 8 cores.

For 99% of users who don't run multithreaded programs or need more memory bandwidth etc it's a waste of money though.

        • @Merlict: I mostly use Eclipse, Java, Oracle, Firefox. They probably wont use all 8 cores :-(
So X99 isn't a worthwhile upgrade path for me. I prefer higher clock speeds.

Is the Gryphon Z97 mobo good for the i7-4790?

        • +1

By 6th gen I meant Skylake, they would be the 6000 series when they come out.

        • @congngo: If you're getting the K chip yeah it reviews well. Otherwise you can save money on a H97.

        • @Merlict: it's about $450 saving…
If only the X99 supports DDR3 ram :(

        • @Merlict: ok, I will get the K version :-)

  • That's cheap, cheaper than shipping. Now to buy something else to justify the cost of shipping…
