Silicon Power 2TB Armor A80 Water/Shock Proof USB3 Portable HDD $139 (Pickup) @ PLE (WA)

160

I've been looking for a deal on this HDD for a while now and this came up. I figure drops are the worst enemy of portable hard drives, so I'd rather pay a little extra to get one which has good protection against shocks. This drive claims to survive 1.2m drop tests, and is waterproof to 1m for 30mins.

The Wirecutter rates the drive as the best ruggedized hdd around at the moment. CNet gives it 4/5, and Amazon has 2.5k customer ratings with a 4.5 star average.

Probably not as good a deal for those in the east, but definitely the best price for people here in WA - cheapest on Staticice is $167.

I should also add that I think the BLUE version is the one on sale. Cheers.

Interesting video on the website - it shows the disk(case) being dropped from 3m, but doesn't show it still working after being dropped.

  • I have seen the future……Water/Shock Proof USB3 Portable SSD!!! :P

    • I've actually heard that SSDs are better than HDD in terms of shock damage, because it doesn't rely on physical disks. (Though it would be expensive).

From my understanding, yes they are some what better at shock/drop damage, as there is no moving parts.
I'm guessing these may have some rubber seals/grommets to cushion the ssd array.

        Seems like a ok deal.
Great job on your post OP.

  • Why water proof? To go with Toughbooks?

  • Thanks OP been looking at getting one as my last HD died recently
