Android Lollipop: Worth Updating ?

Hi all,

I got a notification on my Samsung S5 (Vodafone) saying that Android Lollipop version is available for upgrade. However, it also says that upgrading will decrease my available phone memory by a minimum of 950 MB. Are they talking about the RAM or the in-device storage space? It’s a bit scary for me if they are talking about RAM.

I would like to know whether any of you guys already updated your phone and whether you would recommend the upgrade based on your experience. Please use the poll.

Thanks

    No. Don’t do that.

    in device storage is reduced.

Probably the storage, 950MB is more RAM than some phones have.

I updated my Moto from K to L and I like it. It seems to last longer on a charge. The one feature I like is that it doesn't disconnect you from mobile data until you have authenticated to an AP. I used to get annoyed by free APs hijacking my connection.

I'd stick to Kitkat until Google fixes the memory leak problems with Lollipop.

IMO only people running vanilla Android like on Nexus devices should update to Lollipop, because companies like Samsung etc have already given you Lollipop features ahead of time.

i upgraded my htc m8 from kitkat to lollipop i went from one the best phone ive ever had to a phone i hit and want to snap in half out of frustration

Why? What didn't work with Lollipop?

      • nothing works on it
something that was instant like loading google play will take 10 minutes
the default page on reddit now will take 10 minutes to load
it no longer displays GIF's or any of the new video format image's
any video streaming site like youtube take forever where other s like vimeo or vid me just dont display anything

        • Have you tried resetting your phone? I know that this sounds really stupid, but upgrading without resetting (as int formatting) your phone could cause a lot of bugs and stuff (at least so I've heard).

        • @AznMitch: yeah mate did that 2 days ago same issue contacting htc was useless terrible support

        • @mp3police: …Good luck, sounds like you'd be better off going back to KitKat.

      Flash kitkat stock ROM again.

    • +1

Try flashing stock lollipop. I had the same experience on my tablet. The upgrade install had problems, but flashing it made it all good. Like cniminc says, flash the KitKat rom to get back your best phone.
(Also lollipop on a tablet is terrible, but great on phones)

      • do i need to root the phone to do this ?

        • I think if you're downgrading to kit Kat, then you will (htc call it s off).

Before that, try wiping the cache partition through the recovery menu.

If that doesn't work, try factory resetting the device (and backing up all your files and data and contacts).

There's a forum here where people seem friendly and active, so red through this and ask for more help there:

If it was only just released id wait a little bit to find out if there are any problems other people are haveing with the update.

Anyone who doesn't immediately update their software and devices are complete idiots. Updates are put out for a reason.

In regards to your specifics, I have a friend with an updated S5 and says battery life is greatly improved as well as general speed.

Not really, I have seen enough mess ups by MS and samsung. While I update anyways, I sorta understand why some people are hesitant. That being said, the update has been around for a while, doubt it will have major issues (well other than the pretty well known memory leak issues).

It wasn't me who've negged you btw.

I thought it was a pretty big jump from kitkat to lollipop. New lockscreen, dashlock doesnt seem to work anymore (for my N4 anyway), new notification shortcut and others. Took a while to get used to it at first and I actually regretted updating it, but now Im used to it. Do some youtubing first to see if you like the changes before updating maybe.

I don't want to upgrade my S5, mostly because of the white backgrounds of a lot of stuff :(

  • Upgraded my Samsung S5, improved speed and nicer interface. No issues so far…(from KitKat to Lollipop)

Not sure whether this has to do with lollipop.
I used to have Nexus 4, love it. And I type like a rocket with the swipe thing.
Got this S45 for over 2 months now, and the typing is driving me mad. Thought I will improve over time.
I use the qwerty keyboard and enjoy just swiping when doing text, email or posting on OzB. Nexus was perfect, always give me good result. But S5 has been ridiculous. I have changed to different keyboards, google and samsung itself. Also checked the language. Mostly got English (Australian) but sometimes look like only English (Uk) is available.

Only if its 5.1.1 else stay away.. any earlier version has issues. Google Nexus 5 owner Lollipop 5.1.1 with 36 hours battery life per general use.
