Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka 700mL - $38 @ Dan Murphy's July Member Offer (+ Free Delivery Code)

970
DMWEL0614

First question first: What's the normal price? $44.99.

This vodka is worth trying. End of. Get yourself a big bottle of cloudy apple juice too (refrigerated section, don't skimp and get that el cheapo long-life, transparent, flavourless sugar-water style apple juice :P - trust me, it's not the same). Mix. Add ice. Enjoy. Tastes, no joke, like apple pie. Smooth. At 40% ABV it packs a punch, too.. or it might be the fact it's too delicious to stop at just one/two/three/who's-counting-anyway?

Bison Grass has a long history in Poland and was once the drink of nobility. Using harvested Bison grass, the grass is dried then used to flavour the spirit with a single blade left in each bottle. As quite an aromatic Vodka, it is best enjoyed ice cold and neat.

Want it delivered to your door? Use the code DMWEL0614 on checkout for free delivery. Many thanks to Spackbace for the original code here

Enjoy! You know it's serious vodka when there's a bison printed on the label :)

Can't recommend this highly enough. Drink just as OP advised with quality apple juice.

    • +2

Goes just as nice (even better imho) with a pear nectar

  • +3

I hope I don't get the piece of grass that the Bison just crapped on :-)

  • Can confirm the waterlogged turnip's suggestion, worth the buy.

    • +21

      Soon-to-be vodkalogged turnip..

  • +1

One tough, rough vodka, used to drink it a lot in my youth (could not buy much else), very intense.
Worth trying but it may be too rough for your taste for straight drinking.
    Will definitely get some.

    • +6

actually I don't think it's rough at all… and has a licqouricey flavour a bit

    • +1

i drink vodka regularly and absolutely love it….can drink it straight without an issue

  • Just a fact, the animal is NOT an american buffalo/bison but the equivalent that went nearly extinct in Europa, called a „Zimbru” in Romania https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_bison

    • +6

… and called żubr in Polish, hence the name.

    • +2

Umm…there are still wild bisons in Poland

      • -1

Not until I get out my PokeBall!

  • +1

I'm always tempted by deals like this, but when I get to DMs I end up buying the 6-bottle case of wine they have for $18…

    • +1

Take advantage of free delivery option! Eliminates the temptation of impulse purchases in store :D

      • +2

No no, I mean I get the case of wine instead of whatever I went there for (unless it's the $10 6-pack with DM members)

        I am a cheap alcoholic

          I am a cheap alcoholic

No shame in that :D Always keep in mind that when visiting Dan's, you can try a variety of things at their 'tasting table'. There's one in every store - even if there's no staff standing at the table, just ask a friendly looking staff member if you could possibly try something.. and unless you're there just before closing time, or there on a Sunday (when there are fewer staff on duty), chances are someone will happily jump behind the table and assist.

Ask what they've got available for tasting. There will be items promoted at the table for the week along with spirits which are available any time (though I guess it depends on the store - not every store will have the same things open to try, obviously). You might get lucky and be able to try some Żubrówka before buying :)

In my experience, staff are quite generous when pouring into the glass for you to try, too. The more chatty and friendly you are, and interested in learning about the booze, the more likely the staff will be to.. assist your 'learning' ;) Of course, if you're driving, be mindful of how much you're swallowing. There is a barrel to spit in.. but you don't have to if you don't wanna :P

Fantastic feature, this tasting table, if you're undecided on what to buy, or would rather have a proper taste of something before committing to a whole bottle - especially when it's not a $5 bottle of wine. Can totally understand that. You might decide something really is worth spending a bit more for and treating yourself once in a while :)

        • You want cheap? Members page is showing Nelson County Bourbon 700ml for $27. judging by label, looks as nasty as it is cheap. I dont know where Nelson County is but ill bet its full of degenerates who are drinkin' and fightin' well before midday!

        • @waterlogged turnip: I can't hit up the tasting table because I'm still on my provisional license ;)

        • Moonshine?

  • +6

I had this when I was in Poland. It's definitely one of the better ones (highly ranked among the Polish, who know their vodka).
Such a shame, it's cheap for Australian standards, but I remember it being something like $5 - $7 over there for 700mls (maybe even cheaper).

    • +7

I am polish and I don't remember it cheaper than 14$ for 700ml

      • Hmm perhaps all the vodka got to my head. Might have been thinking of a cheaper variation.

        • +1

No you were probably just confusing it with the 500ml bottles which sell for 20zl (AUD6.92). Shop at Tesco and you get 700ml on special for 29zl (AUD 10.04) or less.

It really depends whether you pay the full retail price or the Ozbargainer-on-tour price.

      • +1

yea i was in poland last year and it was something like 15aud from memory. still, great price. great vodka!

      • +1

Also Polish, and never saw it cheaper than ~$15-17

      • +3

Not polish. Always seen it around ~$40

      • +3

Same. Don't ever drink the Smirnoff crap or Finlandia, etc..
        :)
If you want another great Polish Vodka -> Miedos (Honey based Vodka). Simply fantastic. Also during Christmas we have it, and in Easter Wisnowska (Cherry Vodka).
        Na Zdrowie!

  • Its $11 in Japan 500mls

    • +2

cool, can you bring me some back next time you're over there? i'll take 5, please.

      • +1

        I'll be getting 4!

      • You can only bring back 2L of alcohol to Australia unfortunately.

        • I thought it was 2L tax free and the rest you just declare and pay tax on? I'm going to Japan in Dec with 5 others time to stock up :)

    • +1

Sounds about on par with the price for every bottle of spirits in Japan, unless you count the 3 litre bottles of Whisky for dirt cheap

    • +1

And you can also buy liquor from street vending machines. Ahh, utopian bliss.

      • +2

        Yes?

  • +1

I've tried this and liked it, but I wonder, isn't a good vodka defined by its purity? And, if so, doesn't adding lawn clippings go against that ideal?

Does this kind of spirit need to be considered as its own thing and not as a true vodka?

Genuine questions from a vodka novice.

    • +6

isn't a good vodka defined by its purity?

But what defines what is good? Isn't 'good' subjective? If you enjoy it, is it not then 'good'?

Forget what the purists say. Drink up! This stuff has been around since the 16th century. The Polish made it. Without the Polish and Russians, we wouldn't have vodka at all. Grass clipping flavoured voddy = genius. They must've been drunk to come up with it ;)

    • +3

I wonder, isn't a good vodka defined by its purity? And, if so, doesn't adding lawn clippings go against that ideal?

One thing a lot of Polish families traditionally did was steep (or infuse) other flavours (e.g. fruits or spices) into their vodka. Each family would have their own recipe. Bison is basically made in the same tradition.

Does this kind of spirit need to be considered as its own thing and not as a true vodka?

I see what you mean, but you could start to argue the same of any neutral distilled spirit, though - bourbon and whisky would be nothing (but barley vodka) without oak cask influence.

  • Thanks,

Picked up 2 bottles and $15 for pear cider cans…. will try it out.

  • +1

Good vodka, even just on the rocks

  • It takes some getting used to but it's good as OP suggested with some cloudy apple. Can't drink this stuff straight, or even with soda for my liking.

It used to be around $32-35 in the local IGA 2-3 years ago, I know it's gone on trend recently but perhaps it's still worth a look to see if it can be had at this price. I remember picking up one for sub $30 on special 2 years back.

    • yep exactly right…cant believe its so expensive

    • There's a cheaper Ukrainian vodka with a bison on the front. Same style and taste. Dan Muprhy's used to have it.

  • How does this compare to Grey Goose?

    • +3

      Entirely different vodkas.

  • +4

Heading off to Poland soon otherwise would be getting some:) Every time I have a glass of Żubrówka and apple juice I am so damn proud to be Polish:-) BTW, from what I can see the cheapest 700ml in Poland currently sells at 31.99 PLN (11.03 AUD) :-)

    • Why not bring back some Polmos' Spirytus Rektyfikowany (Rectified Spirit) (ABV 95%) 500mL? My mum did when she made a pilgrimage back to the mother country. I don't think the stuff was meant to be drunk neat though. That alcohol level makes it 192 Proof!

      • Dad's still got a bottle of it at home. It basically smells like rubbing alcohol!
Had a sip, and damn it burns.. Better to use it as an antiseptic!

  • In the past I used to do Zubrowka, cloudy apple juice, and dash of homemade cinnamon and star anise syrup.

  • Thanks OP. Vodka and Apple juice might be my new go to drink

  • is there any particular brand of juice that is best? I rarely buy it so I don't know which ones are best.

    • +1

Tbh, just head into Coles or Woolies for their own branded cloudy apple juice (2L bottle).
The Woolworths (Select) one is $3.99. Coles is around the same price, but they also have a premium version too in a 1.5L bottle which is more expensive. Go with whichever :)

  • +1

Thanks to my Polish heritage, Bison was the first alcohol I ever got incredibly drunk on as a teenager. Sadly can't touch the stuff now :(

    • why not

      • +5

Have you ever seen 'The Exorcist'? I don't want to be the sequel

  • This stuff with apple juice is the best of drinks. It goes in so smoothly you can easily forget that you are in fact drinking something with % in it. :)

  • +1

I'm not a huge vodka drinker… is this vodka really better than a cheapie such as this one for $26/bottle
    https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_904137/ruskov-vodka…

    • Yes.. Yes it is..

  • I've never tried this vodka but if you're mixing vodka, I don't think you should pay a premium on it lol.

Just mix the cheapest vodka into the apple juice and it will taste the same - like apple juice.

    • +3

i disagree, mixed vodka can still taste like arse.
