Anyone any experience with camera drones

Hi, I am looking for a camera drone but dont want to spend too much :)

Found the Syma-X5C-Explorers for 60 or so but wondered if any of you guys have any experience with some decent cheap ones?

I have the Syma X5C-1 and I think it's fantastic.

Easy to fly (beginner mode - slow / expert mode - fast), takes video, does flips (if you're into that sort of thing).

A bit big for flying indoors but outside on a still day I can fly it so high I can hardly see it (which makes for interesting video).

It's the only quad I've owned so so have nothing to compare it too but if you get one I don't think you'll be disappointed.

    Good luck.

Did you buy it from Gearbest on one of the deals posted here, or someone local?

      • I got it from a local eBay store - wasn't super cheap but I was being impatient and didn't want to wait for a special (how un-OzBargain of me).

Think it was about $75 delivered.

I'm at work now so can't check but I'll have a look tonight.

        • Couldn't find the eBay seller but it wasn't super cheap anyway. When I was looking I just found the cheapest Aussie seller with good feedback that I could find.

    • I like the Syma X5C-1 but I wonder if you can get better video quality with spending 100ish.
on the other hand might then be better to attach a xiomi camera to a cheaper drone

Be wary that the cheaper drones can't take much extra weight-my Syma X5C struggles to get off the ground on full charge with a weight of 50g attached. The Yi camera weighs more than that…Also, there aren't many (if any) drones around 100 that will provide 'acceptable' video quality.

I agree. X5C would struggle to take much extra weight.

If you removed the existing camera and replaced it with something of a similar weight it'd be fine though.

And I agree, video quality is good for filming kids running around but nothing close to anything serious. Have a look on YouTube if you want to see what it looks like.

Also, if you want something cheap with enough grunt for a camera, I'd highly recommend this one: http://www.gearbest.com/rc-quadcopters/pp_140472.html

Bit out of your price range though ($143 :s), but worth it in the long run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i32czqkycQM

Also avail from ebay for around $125.

        • that one looks pretty cool!

I build a lot of drones in my spare time. Everything everyone has posted here is pretty rubbish. The cheapest half decent camera done will be DJI phantom for around $1300, and it goes up from there. You need to have a 3 axis gimbal for a start, with a solid camera. There is a newish Parrot drone that has a 40ish megapixel camera, then uses software stabilisation, but I can't see that being any good IRL.

You can build your own decent one with an arducopter flight control, and that gives you almost infinite configurability, and features like gimbal control and 'follow me'.

You also need to keep in mind that drones are pretty dangerous. A decent one will take off a finger no problem, and would do some serious damage if it hit someone. They are also prone to fly aways and failure (they shake themselves to bits, every time I strip one down it is missing screws).
