Cheapest price for Windows?

Hi,

I need Windows to install on a new PC.

Where can I get it for the best price? I don't have any other windows so I can't get Win10 for free.

Thanks for the help,

  • You visit https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/ and buy it from somebody else.

    • Hmm is that legit?

      • Probably yes, probably not, but prior to the creation of this subreddit there was a previous one simply called softwareswap (which now still exists, but is not a shell of it's former self ever since Microsoft cracked down on it because people were allegedly selling keys that were not supposed to be sold, and of course possibly stolen copies).

The current subreddit now only has a couple of trusted sellers and with a high amount of positive feedback. So it's pretty much a trust based system — you should typically only buy from somebody who has a large number of confirmed trades.

  • How come they sell so cheap…

Moderators, can you contact Microsoft to confirm and educate/enlighten us here, are those $25 keys are legit?

    • They're not legit. They may and probably will work, but it is not legit.

    • I believe that the people on this subreddit have paid for different MS developer subscriptions, and therefore get a certain amount of different keys for free included in the subscriptions. Then they sell them for cheap, paying off their developer subscriptions.

So they may be against the subscriptions' terms of service, but will be a legitimate key as far as activation is concerned. You can decide whether this fits into your definition of "legit".

You can get Windows 7 or 8 Home (Basic) (N edition) for about $10, and then upgrade that for free to Windows 10 Home in a few weeks.

This is what I'm going to do. Going to buy this morning, probably.

  • +1

    There's a couple options
The only viable legal one would be to get into the insider program for windows 10 for free and use their prerelease of windows 10 permanently.

You could get a windows key for 7 or 8 off your old computer and use it to install windows 8 on your new computer. It won't be legal to do this.

You could get a windows key from one of the many software key websites but again 99% chance probably not legal.

You could just torrent windows and get an activator definitely illegal.

The way I see it if you're unemployed you've got time to get the insider preview and go through the registration process, it's free. If not you've got a job so just buy windows off somewhere like pccasegear or officeworks.

    • So if I get the insider program windows 10 I can keep that forever?

Not a uni student so I can't get it for free.
I was going to buy it but I thought I'd check for a cheaper version first.
      Thanks,

      • I'm not a uni student and I got into the insider program. You just have to make an account.

        Google is your friend MacGyver.

        • I know ;) I mean if I get Windows 10 from the insider program, can I keep that forever after win 10 is released?

        • @Macgyver: yes, it will however always continue to be the pre-release beta version. I don't know if this will cause any bugs, most likely but then again they might not be anything that affects you.

  • If you are a uni student you can get office 365 for free

  • Get the Windows 10 preview build, when the final one is released (either the end of this week or the end of this month) the full version will be available at no extra cost if you upgrade from the preview build.
