Free Camping in QLD?

We would like to get into camping as a cheap fun family activity but where do you go camping without paying for it? Of course you've got your initial outlay for gear, but I'm hoping to get most of that on gumtree. The problem is all the sites cost - caravan parks, camp grounds etc - even national parks are $23.80 per night for a family. So if you go camping for a week you're out over $150. Ok it's not as expensive as other holidays - but still… I'm sure when I was a kid (grew up interstate) we went plenty of places for free. I assume you can pull over on a roadside somewhere but that's not exactly fun camping for the kids.
Any ideas?

  • On the border of qld and nt. you can camp there for free. Ive done it, nice and dark can see the milky way and the meteors. Just stunning. Otherwise take a trip to cape york, a few spots there you can camp without a cost.

Any where you like, just get up early before rangers catch you sleeping. and if they do, move on to a new town/council area so the same ranger doesnt catch you two days in a row.

Cops are cool - just say you are catching a few hours z's before you continue on your way to the other side of the country as you are fatigued and don't wanna have an accident….they cant really argue if you are nice about it!

EDIT: Oops, just noticed most of those are national parks, which do charge a fairly small fee.

I do a fair bit of driving, and can tell you though, that if you're going camping these days at the free camp sites, don't expect to be "getting away from it all" because they'll all be there with you. Those places tend to be packed.

if you are staying in a national park, its great to pay a small fee to keep up the maintenance of the park and generally you get facilities to do your business in.
