Hawaii Accomodation

Hi fellow Ozbargain deal-hunting friends!

I secured some cheap flights to Hawaii for the end of November (22-29) this year and am after advice on accommodation, where to stay, where to book through, good & bad experiences.

I was wanting to go to Maui for a few days but not 100% on it, just depends on price.

Also are there any hidden surcharges that hotels stick on at the end of your stay I should be aware of?

I have heard you should book a hire car once you get there as its cheaper.

Thanks in advance fellow OB-ers! :D

PS Devo I missed out on skyscanner flights!

    AirBnB.

    • vrbo.com is also good and seems to be more popular in the USA. It's the same concept. However, if you need a referral code for AirBNB for a $33 discount PM me. :)

      • Code for existing user?

        • Unfortunately not. :)
          New users only.

@donga100: Exactly! Then why did u offer me code when u saw that I referred Airbnb for OP, does not that mean I'm already existing user?

        • @bargainaus: I was more so offering it to the OP while at the same time reaffirming your recommendation.

        • @donga100: Ah I see. Your reply to my comment made the mess. :)

  • Maui isn't cheap in general. its a honeymoon destination and the prices reflect that.

Keep an eye out for resort/hotel day charges, which can be circumvented by having membership in the group the resort/hotel is part of.

If you stay at Honolulu, then don't bother with a car for the entire time, but maybe for one-two days during the stay (to visit Pearl Harbour / shopping outlets / beaches / tourist sports).

  • We did a trip in March - stayed in Waikiki for a few nights - expensive, but nice to be on the beach. We did it as a treat for ourselves for a couple of days at start and for last night. Rest of time we stayed on the North Shore - we booked a place on the beach a small cottage 20m from the waves, the owners lived in the upstairs and had the downstairs rented out - lot cheaper then main hotels and amazing location. msg me if you want the details for that particular place. The car can be hired online but use one of the american sites.

How many people? We were there in April and stayed at the Kihei Bay Vista (booked via Rentals Maui). It's an apartment though, might be more than you need?? Seemed like a good location - depending on where you want to be?? 679 S. Kihei Road, Kihei.
    Set us back US$89 per night + $30 damage protection + $30 reservation fee + $95 housekeeping fee + $35.82 taxes

We used arguscarhire.com for car - got smallest 4 door we could find and struggled to fit luuage in those tiny hatchback boots! Only needed to get to accommodation though. Car was provided by Dollar.
6 days cost us US$234.80 including everything (all fees including airport pickup and dropoff, taxes, theft waiver, third party liability, collision damage waiver).

We did 6 days Maui and 3 weeks Waikiki and wish we'd done the other way round. Maui is nice, Waikiki is the most tourist-oriented place I have ever found. It would probably be the last place in Hawaii I'd go back to. Still a great place though :)

Resort fees are often extra and added on to the nightly rate.
