Fun fact! There are more germs on a $1 coin than a toilet seat. Just something to think about.

    • +1

I heard that said about keyboards too. :)

    • +1

Of all the things, you'll find a dish cloth one of the most dirtiest things of all. Way worse than coin, toilet, toothbrush.

      • +1

        how about your anus?

and you are carrying it with you everywhere

    • We need a little bit of germs to train our immune system.

      • -1

I don't mind a few germs but not sh!t on my toothbrush.

    • There are more germs on a $1 coin

      But which one?

    • Lol So you would rather eat your dinner off a toliet seat than a table covered in $1 coins. Did i just think that?

    • +1

Another Fun Fact! Mythbusters proved the toilet seat was one of the most sterile surfaces in the house. Guess they didn't check my housemate's toilet…

    • this is why i rarely use cash -_-

  • +16

What's with all this hate? Why should I hate any coin?

    • +4

Completely agree. We should not hate money in which ever form it is. After all it is our hard earned cash.

      • +9

For anyone who does hate coins in their possession, I'll gladly relieve you of your burden.

Please send your unloved coins to:

        Deposits, the Money Bin,

        Duckburg, Calisota, USA

    • +1

Exactly. I love all money. So much so, I really need more of it.

  • +1

I hate the $1 coin with the redback on it.. It cost me $75! (It was a gift to my English cousin.)

    • +4
      • +4

        oh.. wow..

I just messaged my cousin and asked for it back ;) (Also sent her the link)

That's crazy! I should have bought them ALL!

        • Next thing you know, your cousin will be sending you selfies of her living the high life. :)

        • @greenpossum:

Just did a quick check and the latest one to sell on eBay was for just over $1347 if you factor in shipping

        • +5

@greenpossum: She replied back with a photo! Still in original box + Certificate!

      • +4

Why even bother counterfeiting $100 notes anymore.

  • +8

by far and away the 50c coin. its a monstrosity and it deforms/stretches the coin pocket in my wallet. a couple 50c coins in there and before you know it, your wallet is twice as thick.

    • +8

      And a punctured ass.

    • put a couple in the same pocket as your phone and it does the same thing.

  • +20

I will personally assist anyone who wants to dispose of hated coins, any denomination.
Give your hated coinage a good home.

    • +16

I will also accept notes, if that is more convenient!

      • +2

You are a god among men.

      • Just e-pay me, that's even more convenient. :)

  • 50 Cents because of the size and weight.

  • +4

5 cents because vending machines/ticket machines don't accept them, whyyyyy!?

    • 5c coins are my favourite; my eyes have dialled-in to spot one on a footpath 100 m away during heavy fog.

Most people can be bothered to retrieve a dropped 10c coin, a 5c not so much.

      • That is a perk, "no 5 cents left behind" :P
What gets my goat is when I'm going to pay for parking and I'm just short because all that's left are 5 cents, grrrr!

  • I can't stand coins or cash at all. I go to the commbank coin counter once a month and bank any excess coins or cash I have.

It works great and it's also instant deposit!

  • +1

Definitely the 50c coin. When shops run low on change, and you end up getting the handful of 50c coins for your $8 in change.

  • +39

NZ coins pretending to be ours. Coin bastards.

    • +2

Yeah, annoying when there's some NZ shrapnel mixed into the pool.

      • not if it's the large NZ 50c coins which are equal size and weight to AU 20c coins. well, equal enough for vending machines to be fooled :D

        • Wouldn't you be better off consolidating and exchanging them?

        • @Scrooge McDuck: iirc, forex places don't accept foreign coins from the customer. i don't have one near me so it's easier to dump it into the vending machine and hit coin return for instant gratification ;)

        • Doesn't that mean you've lost 50c somewhere; plus NZD50 cents is 45 cents here haha.

        • @gokhanh: oh no…i'm a bit sharper than that if i'm paying by cash and getting change ;) i come across quite a lot of foreign coins, most of which i add to my collection for potential holiday use lol.

the other day i found a pound coin someone tried to use to buy a parking ticket. it's worth way more than the dollar coin they were trying to pass it off as. some people eh..

        • +1

@tdw: If you weren't in Perth that might've been me lol…

        • @knick007: you has moar money than cents :p

  • +1

We should switch back to the pound!

    • Then our currency would be worth double what it is now!

    • +1

The workout everyone would get carrying around their pounds could solve Australia's obesity epidemic.

  • +5

I try to paywave pretty much everything, I just prefer to have less in my pockets.

  • +6

I always imagined 50c coins are made so that in times of emergency, it can be used like a shuriken. I couldn't think of any other reasons for the coin to be that massive and have corners.

    • +2

The original 50c piece was round, and lighter. Contained some silver. Too expensive to mint relative to face value (but not anywhere nearly as bad as for smaller denominations). This is all from memory. Google, if keen.

Anyway, definitely changed from round to differentiate from too-close-in-size 20 cent piece.

I collected coins as a small child, and can remember very occasional round-fifties turning back up in circulation and handed as change to Mum or Dad. Much excite!

      • +1

Ohhh, that explains everything :) Thanks…
There goes my shuriken moments in high school though.. :(

        • If you ever need a target, let me know.

      • Too expensive to mint relative to face value

I think I read recently that the 5c coin costs 7c to make.

        • BRB, just going to withdraw all my savings in 5c coins and sell them back to the mint for 6c/ea…

      • Find round 50c coins
        Sell
        Profit?

        • A good idea. They are not a rare coin. Googling indicates that people hoarded in them in vast quantities prior to the changeover, with plenty still out there to be found… probably under old beds, by the bagfull!
Sensible people would have sold them back when silver prices went crazy. Current silver price sees them worth about $5 each. 'Better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick', to use one of my Mum's favourite expressions.

Like stamps, 'our' coin collections were really hers to start off with. In 'my' collection, there were quite a lot of pre-decimal shillings. They were replaced by the almost identical-sized 10c piece.
You would be better off seeking out those. Just on the basis of silver content, 14x face value.

Anthonettex, I would suggest that you befriend this OzBargainer. Visit, and sneakily rummage around down the back of his couch.
That was not a euphemism (!), but you do have my encouragement.

Incidentally, along with the coins, my incredible 'Hotwheels' car collection was sold, in my teens, for a pittance, before prices went crazy.
I'm not going to google current. Will add up to many, many, thousands of dollars.

          Cringe / sigh.

        • They're similar size to 20c piece - I've received them as change before.

50 Cents, because it's crap music

  • I don't hate them, in fact I love them a lot, if you hate them, you can give it to me.

    • +4

Too late, gave them to mskeggs. :)

  • +1

I don't carry cash…the homeless guys still have trouble believing me. How long until they start carrying around paywave devices? They already have some pretty sweet mobile phones!

    • I have seen stories of homeless guys in the US who have mobile electronic payment devices to accept card payments.

      • Link?

I'd trust a vagrant with my bank/credit card, what could go wrong?

  • +1

Pub Pokies seem to hate all coins but $1…. Discrimination if you ask me!

  • I'll take your hated coins :P

  • I hate all coins because they are heavy, irregularly shaped compared to notes and take up a lot of space. I especially hate $2 coin because its denomination is too large for a coin, not to mention in its size. If you lose one you lose a lot. I don't see the point of phasing out $1 and $2 notes.

    • I don't see the point of phasing out $1 and $2 notes.

Vending machines. Note authenticators are more complicated than coin authenticators.

But given that e-payment is gaining ground, it will be moot.

  • 50c for sure. 5c close second. Why the 50c hasn't been shrunk to the size of the 5c with the same shape is beyond me. The 5c should have been phased out shortly after the 1 and 2c.

    • I think you forget or may not realise that the 1c and 2c were withdrawn in 1992, some 23 years ago, by Keating IIRC. At that time 5c was worth something and it would have been too draconian to require price rounding to the nearest 10c. And no, there wasn't the e-payment infrastructure we have now. CC payment still required signing slips.

  • needs another poll option: i don't hate any of them, they're money :)

i've been caught short 5c more times than i'd like so i never sneeze at that most humble of coins. if they annoy you so much just chuck 'em on the ground for those that don't mind lol

    • Just abstain from the poll.

      • never!

unless you wanna bribe me of course lol

        • OK next time I'll add an option: I don't like this poll. :)

        • @greenpossum: that's better :p although my offer to be bribed still stands

        • +1

@tdw: Will you take a tin of 5c coins? Oh they're Zimbabwean. :)

        • @greenpossum: you bet!

  • +3

50c is the largest and heaviest of them all.
Our currency doesn't make sense especially the $2 being smaller yet thicker than $1.
Have a look at NZ's coins: https://granbytravels.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/new-zealan… makes sense.

  • Getting 1p coins in the UK was annoying, but I managed to use them, it feels nice not to lose out due to rounding.

Seriously it's those pesky 5c coins, you never have one when you need it but the accumulate when you don't

  • +2

I hate the 1c coins - it seems no one will take them any more…

  • Don't like holding coins but I have a collection of the limited run of coins.
Ones I'm really looking for are the color two dollar coin which I have 2 but have been circulated

  • One that isn't mine.

  • I dont use cash but 50c is huge! anyway I like them as they have been for many years! I wish we still had 1 & 2c

  • I don't like physical notes and coins at all, but to the extent that I tolerate them I like them to be nice and unobtrusive. So I hate that insane dodecagon the most of all.

  • For what it's worth, got some five cent Philippine coins. Exchange rate is ~35:1. So the value is about $0.002. Beyond worthless really.

    • Give it to mskeggs.

  • +1

Funnily enough I was thinking about it this morning. I hate all coins more so because I support a republic and have no idea why Queen Elizabeth II is on all our coins. It should be something more relevant for our country.

    • History lesson? Don't we also have Autralian animals on them? What would you suggest as an alternative, may i ask?

      • Map of Australia.
