Warning about this store - sainsmart

Recently purchased from these guys and had an issue, another person in the same bargain thread had an issue also. I'll post my entire email chain from the customer support so you can judge for yourselves. Also it would be wise to Google sainsmart before you purchase…

Hi I recently purchased your raspberry pi starter kit.

http://www.sainsmart.com/sainsmart-raspberry-pi-starter-kit-…

The sd card (kingston class 4, 8gb) you sent is not compatible with noobs, debian or fedora images. See http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards

I also tried images of Ubuntu and raspbian. The card works but is essentially useless for its intended purpose.

The actual pi is working, I went and bought a SanDisk card and successfully installed rasbian.

The pack should probably be ammended to contain a card that is compatible. It would also be nice to get some sort of compensation, partial refund maybe…

Thanks
J

Hello J,
Thank you so much for your information.

Sorry for the problem of the SD card.We would like to refund $1 for you as compensation.

Sorry again for any inconvenience that may cause you.

Best regards,
Mannie

Hi Mannie,

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the offer, though the sd card that I went and bought to replace yours was the same specs but a different brand, a class 4 8gb sandisk.

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/cameras-printers-stationary/c…

It cost me $13 AUD or approx $9.7 USD.

It would be nice if your compensation would match that…

Cheers

J

Damn man, you got robbed blind man. About the SD card you bought that is. :)

    • yep, impulse buy, just happy the Pi worked tbh

Not sure what you mean by this… It's probably a fake.

I doubt they would compensate you more than $1, but that microsd card you bought was a rip off.

    • If you check the link about compatible sd cards you'll see people are having the same problem. It's probably something to do with the firmware interacting with the Pi.

I don't think it was fake, I was able to write data to it.

I think a Kingston class 4 8gb just doesn't work with raspberry pi

I doubt they would. What if the SD card you got from HN was $100 full price?
Might as well find the most expensive card and link them that.

    • I don't think that was unfair, it was the card I bought.

It was ambitious though. I was curious to see if I could get more than a buck.

  • Just because you paid more for the SD card than you should have, that's not their problem.

  • Regardless of how much he paid, the card they're selling is not compatible with the pi by the looks of it, they can be picky little buggers… and $1 is not really enough compensation for that. Did you pay through PayPal - if so you could resist a claim of item not working correctly through there?

  • Ultimately it is just poor form on their side providing an SD Card in the package that is not compatible. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this though, only $13.

    • these are my exact thoughts, but if you search for sainsmart on ozbargain you will see this thread now.

Hopefully it gives people an idea what they are dealing with if another bargain is posted and they buy from this store.
