  • What is the BS range ?

    • +14

      It doesn't emit any bullshit

      • +1

Unlike others ;) Pretty good looking speaker for the price … until you add an ugly cord hanging out the back to power it rather than plug and charge all the time.

  • +8

does this ever evolve to steelyx?

    • +5

You need to transfer it to another onyx user

      • any bargains on steel coat?

  • I've got one of these.
    Can recommend at this price.

  • +2

    KARMAN HARDON?

  • Wow… Nice price for this speaker. I guess the price cut is due to new model has come out (http://www.harmankardon.com/bluetooth-speakers/HKONYX.html). This new model also offers auxiliary 3.5mm stereo input, something I also like. Wonder whether I should grab this model or wait for new model on special.

    • Saw 2nd gen last week for $200 at Costco. Also has bluetooth mic and better battery life approx. 5 hour playtime

      • Hi odc1984.

At which Costco did you see it?

        • Harbour Town, Docklands

        • I see.. ok thanks but it would be no good deal for me to travel all the way there just to get that speaker.. lol
Well, I will check the 2 Sydney Costco stores sometimes during next week.. :)

        • @odc1984: Richmond too.

      • +3

2nd gen has same battery life as 1st gen, both are specified at 5 hours.

Aside from cosmetic difference, 2nd gen has support for DLNA, Airplay, 3.5mm line input and Wifi while 1st gen doesn't have these.

Both have identical specs for speakers and amplification, they will sound the same, 2nd gen just adds more audio input options listed above.

        • Hmm not sure where you're getting that info from because I have the 2nd gen Onyx Studio and the only difference it has is the 3.5mm jack. It doesn't show any other connections on the box or manual besides bluetooth.

        • -1

          @ohhidayo: ahh ok

        • @TRANCE: Yes I obviously know they are wireless protocols. I'm not saying they are on the device I'm saying the box and manual don't state anything about it nor does it market it. Sounds like you're thinking of the Onyx. Also I know the first gen studio doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.

        • @ohhidayo: I see, I guess I assumed the Onyx and 2nd gen Studio would have the same inputs. Thanks for clearing that up. I can't actually find a product page for the 2nd gen Studio, have only found first gen Studio and the Onyx, so that's what I was going off.

  • +2

Blows away the soundlink mini/ue boom but it is pretty big. And no 3.5mm input is a big minus.

For pure sound quality at half the price of the popular BT speakers i would jump on this.

  • How long would it take to arrive if I order today?

    • +1

      About 7 days.

  • +1

    thanks

  • +4

thanks, bought, don't need but it was a great price….

    • +4

Isn't that true for most deals on ozbargain.

    • +1

That's great now you can start paying the costs involved in storing and moving it and bear the subtle psychological effect of more clutter in your life!

  • +1

Don't think the price is low because an update is coming. The onyx is one Verizon for Apple products and the onyx studios is for any Bluetooth device.
Good price for a very good quality sound. Might get another at this price.

  • +3

Did I need it? No. Did I buy it? Yes. (Sigh) Thanks….I think :)

    • Oh dear I bought it…I already have a pair of Creative Travelsound 200s from 2008…..score one for consumerism.

      • Boo they refunded me and I got an email saying it was dispatching soon…

  • Looks like a great deal has just landed.

  • How does this compare to a Sonos or are they an apples and oranges comparison?

    • +4

I have both, a sonos play5 and this one. I hardly every use the sonos anymore but I use this one all the time. It's just more convenient, I take it to the beach etc, hook it up via bluetooth to play music from my phone or when I watch netflix on my laptop. On the other hand my sonos requires a power supply, and it has an inherent delay which means if I try to use it while watching netflix or the like it won't sync up. Although you could try using the audio sync feature. Point is it's more hassle.

Where the sonos has really done well for me is when I host parties and I play the same music throughout the house, as well as I take it to some events sometimes because it's just incredibly loud. Plus they have lifetime warranty I believe, if you blow the speaker they'll replace it.

      • Thanks Astro. So the Harman wins on convenience and no lag when watching online services which is great and which is something I also want. Is the quality of sound ok? You mention that the Sonos is loud, which I agree with you as I love my Sonos but is there a marked difference between the two in quality? These are currently sold out but looking at buying one next time around.

        • I wouldn't say no lag, I'd say pretty much unnoticeable. The quality of sound is excellent to my untrained ears, really crisp bass (the back chrome plate pulsates, so cool). I've heard audiophiles criticise the sonos speakers and I'm sure they'd criticise this, but compared to any other speakers I've ever owned or heard these two are a cut above.

The Harman kardon is also exceptionally loud, and is a little bit louder again when you plug it in to ac power. Still, the play5 trumps it for volume in my experience.

thanks for the cancelling my order-'preciate that…

    • Why are you cancelling the orders after almost 3 days?

    • Your website had stock when I ordered… why not update your website to reflect your actual stock???

  • +1

Looks a bit like a ripoff of the B&O A9

  • [Not Available]

  • Wow this is a very cheap price for this speaker.

I got it for free from my work but we were selling this for $400+ which is quite a rip off otherewise for a bluetooth only speaker. Nevertheless, that is a sick price for a great speaker. Very loud, crisp and bass-y.

My sites are set on the Gen 2 if it does have airplay support and a 3.5mm jack.

  • +1

Oh boy, I've been waiting for this to drop in price. Finally, I can purchase i… oh, wait. It's sold out. :(

    • You can have mine if you want.

    • Hey mate, if you're in melb or syd I'll grab it…drop me an email on [email protected] and consider it sold.

      • I'm in ACT, I can post it for $10 on top.

        • Happy with that - shoot me an email and we'll make arrangements. Cheers.

        • If the above deal doesn't go through for any reason, can I be next in line? I am in ACT, and can pick up

        • @msharma: Will let you know.

  • I was also refunded. I've bought from them in the past and will continue to do so, you can't blame them for being ozbargained. They have some good deals every now and then and their shipping is quick.

  • +3

    I got refunded too, google it again, I found $133.89 @ http://www.valuebasket.com.au/en_AU/Harman-Kardon-Onyx-Studi…
I ordered again with pricepal %2.25 cash back, if sign up newsletter from https://www.valuebasket.com.au/ you get $5 off when you spend $200, however, they may not have many stock as well.

    • Thanks for the link! Is it a reliable website?

      • +1

first time I buy from this site, pay with paypal, so it's easy to get the refund when you get problem with seller.

      • Saw the valuebasket deal the other day (now deleted) but after reading WP feedback on the company decided not to take the chance.

        • Ordered from valuebasket.com.au on 14th. I've just received it today (DHL Express)! Just 3 days, fast!
          I'm Impressed!

        • @Navgsc:

Sounds promising. Do you know yet if it was shipped from Aus or OS?

        • @OzBragain: Hong Kong

  • Try everbuying.net 105$ usd shipped I think

  • Another order cancelled :(

  • Costco crossroads nsw has the second gen for $200. Great price for those who like extended warranties.

    • Hmm I just bought the 2nd gen (i have first gen as well) and it has a noticeable crackle when the bass hits. It's not there on the first gen. Wondering if I got a defective one..

      • That is most likely defective. When i was testing the one at costco, the bass was clear, smooth/rounded and strong. If you bought it at costco, you can always get the refund/exchange.

        • Yep I'll probably go in for an exchange some time this week. The bass is still really strong, but I noticed the sub was distorting at the back, unlike on my 1st gen where it just pushes in and out. Definitely defective.

        • @ohhidayo: Did you get the black or white? Still deciding if it is worth the purchase compared to my sony SRSBTM8B bluetooth, powered by 4 x AA eneloops.

        • @gawky: I got it in black since most my decor is black. I actually prefer the look of the older one (the mesh looks nicer haha). I've used the UE Boom, UE Mini Boom, Creative Airwave HD and Sonos Play, and the harman absolutely destroys all of them. Seriously the bass and how loud it can go (when it's plugged in) is crazy. However it is significantly bigger, since I'm using it as a non portable it's not an issue.

        • +1

          @ohhidayo: I see - might get a white one as a gift for….. my partner……. hahaha

  • For what it's worth I have this speaker and thought wow it's epic and then realised it's quite commonly available in Asia in the A$140 price range - I suspect there was alot of dumping going on so the market got flooded in some locations particularly in Jakarta. This speaker sounds great and has epic bass but it's a bit big and there isn't any flexibility or movement in the stand (ie fixed angle and short height).
