Coles Myer Gift Card to buy another gift card (JBHIFI)

Hi so I have $150 in Coles Myer Gift Cards I got from a rewards program. I want to buy the Sony Smart Watch 3 so went into Coles and wanted to buy the JBHIFI giftcard with my Coles Myer gift card and was told I couldn't!!

Can anyone think of a way I can buy the smartwatch with the Coles Myer Gift Card? JBHIFI offered $267 (Official Sony Store is $224.25 but they're not in stock atm) which means I would only pay $167 or $74.25 if I could find a way to make them price match the official Sony Sale

Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase gift cards, Recharge Vouchers or Mobile Plans.

Does anyone know if I returned something that cost $150 with a giftcard, could I get cash back somehow?

    • I looked into a similar thing recently. Legally they have to refund a purchase to the same purchase method (to reduce money laundering).
Your best bet is to try and trade your voucher with a friend or family member for cash. Or you could sell it on Gumtree or something, but you will lose some of its value.

Does Myer stock it? Pricematch there?

Sell your giftcard, someone will surely buy it for at least $140

you can buy jbhifi gift card with the coles gift card i did it , just go in take the gift card you want and go self checkout :) works for me

    • "…take the gift card you want and go self checkout :) works for me"

I can't see how anyone could do this, because for all the giftcards I've ever bought at Coles a cashier needs to 'set-up' the card being bought, i.e. accept the right amount of cash, and assign that amount to the card being bought, then finally type some stuff into their register/computer and swipe the new card through their little machine to 'activate' it.

Are JB cards different? Do they each come with a pre-assigned value perhaps, rendering them more like a standard product than the 'wish' or 'Dan Murphy' giftcards, that are 'loaded' with whatever amount the consumer wants at the time they're bought?

      • I know the ticketmaster gift cards are advertised as $50 or $100. And perhaps the JB Hifi ones are similar. Even so, I was under the impression that someone at the cashier needs to load that amount onto the card, or activate it, or else it will be worthless.

If these cards can be bought via self checkouts (and subsequently used) successfully, then obviously I am wrong.

the cards need authorisation, however once authorised they automatically load the amount on.

    • Hi Andiie21, you could buy them via self checkout. But subsequently, did you encounter any issues when using them? Thanks.

nope it just needs to get verified by the worker at the self checkout after they do that just click pay by card click gift cards all done :)

definitely work's I've done it with $150 worth this week.

Only catch is the cashier does need to approve it, however they don't really stand there to hold your hand for payment so they realistically don't know (or care) how you pay.

  • Go for self Check out !!!

  • I'll try self checkout tomorrow

    • Sell checkout you still need a staff member to authorise and load the amount on the new gift card

  • I'll buy of you $135

  • Have you tried Officeworks? Officeworks does sell Sony smartwatch, and accepts Coles Myer gift card. ^_^

  • Take the alternate Giftcard to Point of Sale and when you are asked about payment method mention that it is EFTPOS and pay with your Coles Myer Card. Agree, some Check out personnel may say that you cannot exchange one for the other. It is more like a store policy than System enforced policy.

  • I would simply buy my supermarket shopping with the gift cards or trade with a friend who shops at Coles, then use your cash to buy at JB etc. We often do this with our excess gift cards at Christmas time, especially as we exchange our frequent flyer etc points for gift cards at this time. None of them go to waste.

+1 to this. Use the the gift card to buy groceries you already would have needed to buy, and then use the saved money to buy JB cards. Easy.

  • Sell or trade it in the classifieds? Use the gift card for grocery shopping and use the cash you save for the watch? Do any of the stores in the Coles Myer group stock the watch - Myer most likely - even via special order?

  • Although you can buy something, then refund it and get the value onto another type of card.
