Optus Huawei E5251 3G Portable Wi-Fi Modem with 5GB Data $24 @ Target (in-Store Only)

150

The run for half price Optus Huawei wifi Modem 5GB data continues. Unfortunately not available online. I got mine from the Bondi store they had plenty available and no 'Specials' tag near the ticket. The salesperson was also not aware of the deal :)

May be easier to price match at officeworks if cant find in your local store or OW is closer..

Not sure if this ends today but I know it was in their catalogue so probably is ending today.

  • No deal..Already available for same price at OW!!

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-huawe…

    • Oh.. the last deal for the same posted for Officeworks said 'Expired' so I thought its finished.. well so its available at two places then :)

      • It is still available at a few office works, picked up one last night from the Pitt St, Sydney OW. You have to ask though.

This is still a good deal.

    • +2

still a deal if Target's closer to you than OW.

      • Is it in NSW (Bondi) only or nationwide ? Am in Melbourne.

    • +2

Maybe someone price matched in OW, so OW just set it the same price so they don't have to drop further 5%.

      • Probably right as the last time the price was $24.50

    • +1

      From the OW link, specifications:

"Battery Life: 200 hours while WIFI is off."

So, it works as a paperweight with nice little lights for a bit over a week. Nice!

  • I have one sitting in front of me, was hard to source from officeworks. Works great.

  • No more free netflix!

    • nooooooo. luckily I got about a year worth :P

  • How long do the 5 GB last? Is it a 30 day or more?

    • +1

      30 days

Is the service 3g or we limited to 3g because of the device? If we use in 4g device we will get 4g?

    • Good question. I'd assume it's limited by the device rather than the SIM… surely.

    • The sim is 3G too. I tried to use tethering on the sim that came with it, but it didn't work. Optus says all 4G "plans" have tethering enabled.

    • Kinda moot… Good luck getting throughput on any Optus data service anywhere. Their network is swamped.

      • +2

Depends where you are. But generally yes (not sure why ppl complained about voda network when Optus's is if anything been worse for a longtime)

        • I hear you.. its not the speed I will complain about but too many black spots on the Airport line train in Sydney

      • I totally agree. Now that I've tried Telstra, Vodafone and Optus for Mobile Broadband. On average I get worse data rates on Optus. Telstra is the best overall and Vodafone is good. Your results may vary depending on which areas you frequent but I base this on my travels around Melbourne.

  • Can some1 please explain how these work. I see it comes with a usb cable. Thats whats confusing me… do u need a computer or laptop to connect it. Or can u just use it with a mobile/tablet etc

    • The USB cable is to charge it only. Your devices just connect to hotspot using their normal wifi functionality.

  • Anyone had success unlocking this model for use with non-Optus providers?

    • Are you sure it is locked? or is it the settings which need to be updated to access other networks? I know it does work with Amaysim (as per Amaysim's website someone posted on another post)

      • I haven't bought one yet. Just wanted to get an idea as the data will expire before I can use it up but the modem itself is worth a bit for me. Might give it a shot anyway.

    • Anyone have a definitive answer on this?

      • I gave my modem to a mate of mine. He stuck a Telstra SIM in it and it worked. Although he did say the data rate with the Telstra SIM was slow in this modem but fast in the Telstra device.

  • Anyone knows how long the sim expires?

    • Let me open the box and might find out :)

  • +1

my one says Expiry 1 Jul 2016

    • Thanks.

    • Cool. Means I can wait almost a year before activating… 5Gb in 30days isn't gonna be used up by me unless I'm doing travel and I don't plan on doing any more domestic travel this year unless it's for work (but that's for a few days at a time).

  • Another question. Will Amaysim data sim work on this? It is on Optus network.

    • +1

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/help-support/plans-pricing/what-m…

What modems or dongles can I use?

You can use any unlocked modem or dongle with your amaysim Data Pack or one that is compatible with the Optus Network. For the Optus 4G Plus network to work on the modem or dongle, it must be able to operate on the 700MHz network frequency.

From that I take it that this will work..

      • Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately I have no ADSL until next Wednesday.

This should see me through until then!

Can confirm decent speeds for 'acquiring' TV episodes. 20mbps+.

    Thanks OP

  • Just removed the Expiry Date as this still seems to be available at Target (Friday 17/7/15)

  • Still valid..

  • I just went to Target and the price is now $69.

  • Still $24 online
    http://www.target.com.au/p/optus-huawei-e5251-mini-wifi-broa…

You should go and claim a refund.. Actually if they are like Coles, they should give this one to you for free due to incorrect charging

  • Does anyone know if this is "true" prepaid, ie Can I buy it and recharge once or twice or do I need to "Sign up" so to speak on a plan?

I am just looking for a cheap mobile broadband option to tide me over for 3 months as our copper is being turned off in 2 weeks and we will be moving in 2-3 months.

    Thanks

    • You can recharge,m Yes. But this is cheaper than a recharge and includes Modem. So If I were you, I would buy 3 of these for 3 months! and may be sell the modems to lessen the costs even further :)

      • Thanks. Do I need to register my details each time though, I know sometimes when you get a phone on a plan it does a credit check etc I don't want this to happen

        • +1

no no.. This is prepaid right.. so no Credit check etc.. you just register the SIM on Optus website to get it activated.. thats it..

  • +1

Thanks OP. No stock at my local Target but still showing $24 on sale. Luckily Coles was kind enough to price match at $24…using only this post as a source :)

    • Cool.. That makes me feel good :)

  • No longer available..

    • they are still $29 at Officeworks, seems to be the normal price now. I am not sure if Target price match??

      • Someone mentioned that Coles did PM for them.. so given that Target is the same parent org; they might also do it; but I cant find it mentioned specifically on Sir. Google

        • I know Coles Myer Group used to price match and beat it by 10% like Kmart, Coles but not sure if Target ever did or do. I might have to pop in and see if they price match, they most likely will as long as the competitor has it in stock which my local officeworks does but Target is more convenient in terms of location

        • hmm.. if they beat it by 10% you practically get it for $26.. good deal..

        • I just looked on the Kmart website they do a price guarantee but it's only matching, they must have ditched the "beat it by 10%" so I doubt Target would either, they would most likely only price match

        • @ashar:

huh 5%? I have seen Dick Smith have them for $29 also but it's online only I think which means you have to pay postage?

        • @ashar:

Target do not price match unless it is a toy and part of an event like the great toy sale. I kindly told them I will have to then shop at their competitor, seems unbelievable in this day and age they can afford to lose customers.

    • Still better st officeworks without postage 29$.looks like the dick Smith one is delivery only

    • I want 2_3 which would have Been ok but they don't combine postage

      • So Officeworks do not match Online sales?
