    People still buy top loaders?

    • +1

      Why not?

      • +7

I voted positive on the deal but was merely asking the question.

        Why not?

More wear and tear on clothes.
        More water useage.
        Smaller loads.
        More detergent required.
        Noisier operation.
        Longer drying times.
        Less efficient in cleaning.
        Less reliable.

        • +3

Fair enough. I've got a Fisher and Paykel top loader, been using it for about 10 years and the last 5 years used almost daily (sometimes 3-4 times) with the kids, never had an issue.

Also guys, no need to downvote, Mattress was just asking a question…

        • @vger74656:

No worries. Maybe I shouldn't believe all I read.

        • +3

They're a lot better on water now. I think the main attraction is being able to add things after the wash starts, and not having to bend down. A lot of people have a bad experience, and blame it on the type of machine, and the switch to a top loader thinking it will solve their problems :/

          @outlander:

Also lots of people are badly burned by the Electrolux brand, their front loaders fail if a coin or button gets into the unit, or owning it beyond the warranty period. The consensus is major design flaws (a cynic would call it Planned Obsolescence) which render them uneconomical to repair, so off to the trash.

Most top loaders don't seem to suffer from these issues.

don't forget samsungs front loader disaster

Don't you mean "Samsung's top loader disaster"?

        • @PinzVidz: bah!!

    • my old electrolux front loader sucked in terms of washing performance. i always had to add an extra rinse to the wash cycle and that didn't really help. water efficiency is pointless if you don't clean your clothes. washed towels felt like cardboard. wash cycle was over 2 hours. once you started the cycle it was hard to add anything that you forgot.

Pfft front loaders = back problems lol

    • +1

      That's indisputable.

      • +4

        I dispute that.

    • +3

I disagree..I put the basket on the floor in front of the washing machine and as I pull the clothes, they fall into the basket. Top loader means you have to lean in and lift the clothes out.

I would never buy a top loader - much more water use, worse cleaning ability, higher wear and tear on the clothes, get awful pilling and lint all over clothes.

For a few hundred extra, if that, you could get a good brand front loader (LG, Samsung, etc). I wouldn't buy this Aldi one as it'll not be as well made and will use a lot more water. The savings in front loader from less water use and clothes lasting longer will recoup any extra you paid for it.

In addition, clothes dry a lot faster on the clothesline from a front loader as they spin at 1200+ rpm. This can halve drying time.

This machine is awesome. I bought one a couple of years ago. Still goes perfect. Its quiet, when its spinning all you really hear is the wter pump, and its fast - Washes a huge amount of clothes in 33 minutes. Its even got wheels :)

    • +2

No one mentioned the wheels. That's the deal clincher for me.

    • +3

      Wheels on a washing machine??
That can only lead to this. ;)

Keep trying to justify your purchase of a front loader for a few hundred backs more

  • +1

End of the day a washing machine is a washing machine cheaper with decent reviews is more favourable

  • +1

The failure rate on front loaders is huge .just wait till your front loader has a problem and you get the repair bill

    • +1

      yeah, I'll wait for that.

    • That's more due to shoddy manufacturing and cost cutting rather than the front load design being no good.

Friend's Samsung front loader was only around 3 years old when it had draining issues. What was on the net suggested possibility of blocked piping so I pulled the machine apart to get to the drain pump assembly. No blockages but I was able to diagnose the pump as not rotating freely. So for about $70 for a new pump and an hour or so of labour it was fixed (something that anyone half handy could have done).

Ultimately the issue was that they cheaped out on the design of the pump and from searching the make and model number I found this pump is used in lots of dish washers and washing machines from various brands…

  • Probably 2/store if tap offer is anything to go by

If you compare the top loader to a typical equivalent front loader you can see the stark differences in energy and water consumption:
    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-25-…

    http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/8kg-front-load-electrolux…

The front loader uses over half less electricity, and nearly half the amount of water each load. With the price of electricity and water these days, it won't take long to recoup the slightly higher price of a front loader compared to a top loader.

In addition with front loaders spinning better, if you use a tumble dryer, it will require less drying time than if you'd spun the clothes dry in a top loader - which means even more savings.

    • So, what you're saying is you'd have to be an idiot to buy a top loader?

      • Well…read between the lines…but the only upside I can see for one is they are quicker, but really it's not like you're standing there watching it and they all have timer delay so you can set them to finish when you get home/wake up so it's not like it's inconveniencing you - just get organised and not want something washed 10 minutes before you want to wear it :)

        • Quicker? I'm not no sure. My front loader has a 20 or 30 min wash cycle that ends in a spin at 1600rpm and therefore only needs a short time in the dryer.

I personally cannot see any benefit of the top loader…….apart from the wheels.

    • if people are using dryers then electricity consumption is irrelevant.

      • Ok, 'shorter time on the line'. You know what I'm saying.

      • Not really, if the clothes are spun better from the washing machine, then the tumble dryer will require less time to dry the clothes.

Still I avoid the tumble dryer at all costs, only time I use it is to finish off clothes that have been hanging outside and don't get quite dry in winter months….
