Brand new clothes - two suppliers - cat urine smell!

Has anyone else had this issue?

I've bought a parcel from rivers and recently a parcel from asos

The jacket and other new clothes smelt like cat urine, I thought this was really strange and decided to not buy from Rivers again. Then I bought items from asos and the boots have the same strong cat urine smell! I can't exactly wash the shoes, I may have to do the bicarb trick but this smell can be smelt across the room.

I've bought many items before and never experienced this :s

Also I don't have a cat!

  • was it left outside?

    • Nope neither of them, one was packaged in a satchel the other in a box

I think Sage means when it was delivered were they left outside your front door…neighbors cats may have a habit of marking anything new.

Oh yes sorry my response didn't make sense. I meant neither of them were left outside and gave some more info :)

  • Also I don't have a cat!

It's likely formaldehyde. It's used to reduce wrinkling or prevent mould from growing when the item has to travel long distances. Product bought from Asian countries sometimes smell a bit as a consequence of them getting a bit too liberal with it. If they smell you should definitely wash them before use as too much can be a bit unsafe.

Given the username, there's probably more chance the OP is already a knockout than a 'him'.

  • Its the smell from the chemicals used in processing the fabrics air outside for a while and u should be good to go I have a really sensitive nose and have had the same issue weird smells from clothes.

  • Noticed something similar myself with items purchased; it does make you wonder what you are wearing even after you have washed them. If you can't get the smell out of the shoes it might be worth looking at some of the products they sell for getting rid of cat urine smells. We had a boy cat that was into "marking" and these are pretty good at neutralizing the odour.
