      Yep, I have been a member for years, it was free back then. I checked around all hire car companies, and all of their programs were free to join.

    Perhaps it's just poor wording by Amex Australia on what the offer is. Could it be it's the extras which makes this an Amex deal?

      Yes, I think that the perks are the bit that's unique to AMEX. The Gold Plus program itself is free all the time for everyone

Cheapest rental is www.discounthawaiiicarrental.com It even beats Priceline.com ( which you need to register with a U.S. address) I've booked vehicles from both sites in the past with no issues.
