Indomie Mi Goreng $4.80 Box of 20 @ Woolworths [Toorak, VIC]

740

Everyones favourite poison is on sale at Woolies. 24c each is about the same as the grey imports from the Asian supermarkets.

Decent stack available at Toorak (Tok H), but YMMV at the locals. Haven't seen it in the cattledogs yet.

    Aren't these really unhealthy?

    • -6

not much more unhealthy than sushi.

      • Lol get a clue, these are so ridiculously high in sodium.

        • +7

So don't put in all the salt/seasoning.

          mind blown

        • -4

pls read my comment again, if you find it difficult to comprehend.

        • @alwayseric:

What sushi are you eating thats high in sodium?

        • @alwayseric:

you should read your comment again, it doesn't make sense.

          @Onit:

Sushi rice has sugar, vinegar and salt added to it before they're rolled into sushi rolls, you know. It's not exactly as 'pure' and innocent as it looks.

I love sushi, and it appeals to me because of how 'simple' they are in terms of ingredients.. not highly processed, etc. A nice basic salmon and avocado roll, for instance, is quite natural and non-junky. But the rice tastes great for a reason. One roll usually sits at between 200-350 calories depending on size and what is packed into it (fried stuff like soft shell crab, tuna which is mashed together with a crapload of mayo, and most other Westernised fillings would obviously bump up the calories easily). Also think about the pickles added to many rolls and how much sugar and salt they've soaked up.

Since no-one ever really eats just one roll at once, the salt, sugar, and calorie contents doesn't differ all too much to a fast food burger.

It's definitely not the worst kind of fast food to pick, but sushi isn't as innocent as it looks either. Google, look into how sushi is made and what goes into basic sushi making. Oh and unless you skip using the soy sauce included with most sushi… there's another source of salt thrown in.

Educate yourself about food before mocking other people for what you consider ignorance.

        • @waterlogged turnip: plus the soy sauce it dips in sodium is yummy

    • +2

That would be why i called it 'favourite poison' ;)

All instant noodles are unhealthy but these are the best tasting ones of the lot, by comparison I'd take these over Maggi's any day ;)

      • hahaha my 2 noodles I would eat are Migoreng and maggi 2 minute noodles =p

    • -1

Only unhealthy for a few million species on the brink of extinction due to logging of Malaysian rainforests so rich men can harvest palm oil.

      Other than that your good.

      About 300 calories per packet

    BEWARE! UNI students incoming!!!

    • +13

The hard up Toorak uni students?

      • I've heard they have not only purchased the noodles, but they have also bought the trucks that transports the noodles to the store.

        • +2

I've heard they mix cocaine in with the sachets and drive sports cars down Chapel St at 3am on a Sunday morning.

The breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions.

    • Nutrigrain is breakfast of champions…full of sugar to keep them going

  • Do the grey imports still have that banned substance problem which surfaced a couple of years ago?

  • +3

I love it how not a single thread goes by without someone mentioning how unhealthy they are haha

    • +1

About as ridiculous as saying a piece of cake is unhealthy …

    • +1

Just like when there are none when chips, meat pies or ice cream are on special. KFC/Nandos/McDonalds/Hungry Jacks have sales etc. Or even when non-BPA products e.g. canned tuna etc. is sold.

  • +1

so the grey import ones are the ones say "Mi Instan" and the legit export quality is "instant noodle" ?

but yeah there are cheapo ones 40pk/box but cheaper than 30pk/box

    • Yap. Just fyi, get and cook both of them…see the difference.

      • Do you prefer the 'grey import' ones or the export version that they sell in Woolies/Coles?
I haven't noticed the difference before but just curious which ones are better.

        • I haven't noticed the difference

        • +1

          Export version.

Cook them with different pots obviously. You'd see the significantly higher colouring content
You'd see the watery texture of the sweet soy sauce, the oil, the chili sauce.
You'd also feel difference in the chewiness of the noodle itself.

Oh and check out on the top (R) corner of the packages. The grey import would list all kinds of vitamins (suggesting that this is enough for your daily meals); while the export quality shows 'includes 3 packets of sauce' or something along those lines

  • If you want to make them healthier and tastier nuke some asian mixed vegetables and add them at the end.

    • -2

Apparently the sodium content in these things is so high it's called a poison to ram home how lethal salt is (salt totally not required to survive guys rather IT WILL KILL YOU OK) so if yoiu believe this idiocy then adding vegetables isn't going to save you.

Other than the chance of death from consuming sodium which has been debunked mainly because people aren't dying from it sure, it sounds healthy. IF YOU IGNORE THE DEATH PART (which wont happen).

      • +1

Have you ever checked your self? 820mg per packet "Our total maximum recommended limit of sodium for adults should be less than 2300mg/ day." from the heart foundation.

I assume you realise that we actually need sodium in our diet to be healthy?

In my case I rarely eat them and I have a very low sodium diet so not an issue, adding the vegetables means you eat a lower amount of sodium to the quantity of food.

Thank you for supporting my country

2x packets. Open all seasoning packets pour all the liquid ones in pour all the fried onion in. Pour one seasoning powder in with the rest, the other goes into the boiling water. Crack an egg into boiling water, put noodles in, when almost done but in some bak choy or choy sum. Once cooked drain and mix. Enjoy.

That's how I eat my Mi Goreng.

    • +1

+1 they didn't show this on Masterchef

    • hang on…….so what goes into boiling water? sound like the noodles! :P

      • so he said, one seasoning powder in the original bowl and then the 2nd seasoning powder in the boiling water … hmmm and then crack an egg in boiling water and then put the noodles in which would take 2-3 mins

interesting, i should try this out

        • Yeah the seasoning powder is OTT so already enough flavour. In the water at least the noodles get a coat of the seasoning powder. Sort of like putting salt in the water for spaghetti.

        • @jlogic:

          OTT?

        • +1

@prankster: Over The Top… Two seasoning powder packets is way too salty. So engage it in a different way to salt up the noodles and drain the excess.

    • Don't forget to put a bit of lemon juice on the noodles, makes it that much better

  • +1

Word of advice..if you scare of eaten too much of this ..try to boiled with a teaspoon of bicarbsoda ..it's soften the noodle and naturaliser most of the chemical..and drain and wash with cool water after…after the water clear..put the others ingredient..I prefer put half of the seasoning and eaten with fried egg and some vegies,,to make me believe its not junk food…😀

  • Cook it in water for 2 mins. Drain. Then stir fry with all the seasoning. That's how you eat it in Indonesia. The authentic way…

    • Authentic to who?

      • +6

Authentic to those who can read or pass geography in school…

    • -3

how about: cook it in the water for 2 min, drink the water, and throw away the noodle. The authentic way…

  • Is it against OzBargain rules to point out that the palm oil in these probably isn't ethically sourced?

    • Lol so is using the computer/tablet/laptop/mobile phone on your hand right now. Made in disastrous condition for workers (as well as child labourers). Not to mention your clothes made in china/Bangladesh/Thailand. Oh how about the house you are living in? they're all made in china under unfair conditions too!

      • Down-voting the truth doesn't change it.

        • Yes and commenting on ob does? Commenting with said portable devices does? Someone who buys big w shoes, which are made in China under horrible conditions. Uh huh.

  • +1

I was eating 3 packets for lunch and dinner for 4 days straight and I felt very ill on the last day, avoid

    • Heh. Those noodles keep very well. They're more a pantry stuffer, than anything else.

    • thats desperation lol, this when your at uni?

i'd probably eat 2 packets once every 2 weeks just for breaky, the amount you had is too much man lol
