ZTE Fit Smart 4G Smartphone $49.50 (Save $49.50 - Half Price) @ Woolworths (Starts 29/7)

1280

It's been a while since we've had a great cheap phone deal and this would rival the Y550 deals from before if only they came with $50 credit.I felt this deserved to have its own deal separate from Guy Incogito's https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204482, and cheers to kronicmacstigator for highlighting it.

I apologise, this is my first deal (and it's stolen), and I am not sure how to format the below.

There is another thread which compared the Y550 to this (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186013), and I will post the positive highlights here:
"Hadn't heard of the ZTE Fit 4G Smart until looking at this post. Main benefits here are the internal storage amount (much better for apps) and the extra 4G band 28 700mhz which the Y550 doesn't have. -Important for Optus 4G coverage in regional areas.
The ZTE has a MTK Processor (not sure which) and the Y550 has the more popular Snapdragon 410 if that makes a difference."

"The Mediatek MT6582 processor in the ZTE should be fine for most uses, especially with its stock KitKat - it's benchmarks are comparable to the Tegra 3 or the Cortex A7. As it only needs to support a low-res screen, I actually expect it to be very fast.
I agree the ZTE kills the Huawei on all counts. Nobody's even mentioned that the ZTE has 10% more battery. If you're on the Optus Network, the Fit 4g Smart is the best value phone on the market."

I personally have had both phones, here are my points:
- This phone is locked to Optus, bagman unlocks for $10.
- I enjoyed my Huawei, but was frustrated by the storage issues. I lost the Huawei :( I thought the ZTE Fit Smart would be the answer to my problems with 8GB. Turns out this is partitioned and you can only really make use of 2GB! However, ZTE have finally come out with a solution to reflash this and get 5GB, I've done it and it works, but you have to contact them on whirlpool and there is a lengthy discussion on it there https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2387307
- A warning, I am on my second ZTE Fit Smart, mine just stopped charging suddenly and some others have pointed out this issue on whirlpool.
- Another warning, I find the phone has a number of annoying flaws that I didn't have with the Huawei, such as the battery getting hot, the phone lighting up randomly, it disconnecting from my pebble, camera default is too zoomed in, pics being completely cropped in apps, takes forever to charge on usb laptop charging (fine from plug socket) and the button and port placement at the side is different than most phones.

On a more positive note, for $49.50 I think this is a bargain once you apply the storage fix, the small storage is what ruins most phones in this price bracket. I bought it on special for $79 a few weeks back.

This has been a longer post than intended but I know you'll want the specs:

    • I actually found the screen better than expected given these numbers. The colours and the contrast are quite good (unless you're a Super AMOLED tragic).

And yes, the battery and the performance both exceeded my expectations.

    • I used to think the same as you. That a huge screen resolution was a must. After owning the Huawei G526 and Y550 initially buying them as temporary throw away phones I've become very attached to them.

On a screen size of 4.5" the pixel density will be over 200 DPI. Compared to most notebooks and netbooks that's amazingly sharp.

Screen resolution is only one aspect of the picture quality. More important aspects for readability are:
      - screen size
      - DPI
      - screen brightness
      - viewing angles
      - contrast ratio/black levels
      - reflection/anti-glare
      - colour accuracy/colour temperature

I used to like the idea of playing 720p H.264 videos on a mobile phone but the reality is that watching a 1hr movie is uncomfortable and gives a stiff neck + sore eyes.

My friends who own 1080p mobile phones and play 3D games run out of battery in minutes and always worry about plugging in the power adapter or a powerbank. Which kind of defeats the "mobile" in mobile phone.

I'm a huge admirer of all these sub $100 phones.

  • I'm on vaya anyone know if the handset will work without unlocking the unit, as vaya is a reseller of optus anyway.

    • only one way to find out

    • +1

Yes, I used it with a Vaya SIM out of the box with no issues.

  • +1

So are people saying this won't work with telstra/aldi if unlocked?

    • If unlocked by bagman/wherever, it will work with any network

      • +1

        That's not what raven2000 said.

        raven2000 2 hours 52 min ago
This doesn't have UMTS 850 so it's useless on Telstra

        • It might work well on Telstra if you have access to 4G coverage since Telstra is deploying 700 Mhz as well which should mean you shouldn't drop down to 2G, or in worst case nothing because 2G towers are being refarmed and by next year none will be left.

700 Mhz has good penetration, similar to UTMS 850 Mhz working in elevators whilst 2100 Mhz usually fails.

This phone is probably unadvised on Aldi as 2100 Mhz UTMS is almost non-existent and 2G as explained above is disappearing.

        • @josephchi: I only want it for phone and occasional email.
More after a bigger screen for gps maps

        • +1

          @josephchi:
Looking at the specs it says 850 GSM is good to go

          Specifications
          4G LTE 1800 (Band 3),2600(Band 7), 700 (Band 28), 2300TDD (Band 40) with 150Mbps downlink, 50Mbps uplink
          3G UMTS 900, 2100 MHz with 42.2Mbps DL / 11.5Mbps UL (HSPA+)

          @Davros: I got negged for stating the facts, what a sad sack (-;

        • @Davros: Well, neg'er probably should have just replied saying it's 3G 850 that is missing but you quoted 2G 850, which is pointless…

        • @McFly: Thanks, it shows how much I know about different phone bands.
So with my mentioned use above ,phone calls and very occasional checking of email, will this one work if using Aldi PAYG?
(I have no data plan, I just turn on mobile data when needed and pay the 0.05c for the quick check)

I am guessing the answer will be no?

        • +2

@Davros: ? Already answered above (josephchi.)

        • @McFly: Thanks, into the reject pile with this one

      • Does the screen on this compare to my yuck lumia 530 (TFT), worth ~$30 [$0:if counting bonus code netflix].

        • It uses a TFT screen, but probably still better. For some reason the Lumia 530/532 have really horrible screens even for TFT.

  • Interesting - larger battery capacity than Moto G (1st and 2nd Gen)
Doubt it'd make much of a difference however.

  • +1

If you must use Optus network then this is the go..
Other wise Telstra 4GX Buzz (ZTE Blade Q Lux) is the go.
    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/tel…
it has been on sale for $89.
Would be nice if there was a half price sale.

    • +2

yeah, i was just trying to say this. from coles next Wed at $99, with 5000 flybuys points, makes it $75. 4gx will only be $15 more (Fit will be $49+$10 unlock)

      • Then why may $75? If it is $59 with similar spec?

        • This phone doesn't have 850mhz which cannot be used for Telstra.

    • Give it time, it's only recently released I believe. The 4GX seems like it could be another good budget phone.

    • @bagman

Can you unlock this Telstra handset?

To everyone: would this work well will Optus (Amaysim)?

Yes, I'm talking about this Telstra Buzz phone

  • +1

Its a telstra dave in plain clothes.

    • +2

      http://www.zte.com.au/telstra/T83.htm

Not quite. Dave is only 4.0 inches. Although it did manage to pack a 2500mah battery. That's pretty generous for a 4" device.

The Dave was also a load more expensive at launch. $360 RRP. Too bad it was also a lousy phone..

      • +1

        poor Dave only 4"

  • This does suit me though, I'm with Optus :)

  • General question; If you are with Amaysim (which uses Optus as their carrier) I presume an Optus locked phone still works?

    • Yes, should work on all Optus resellers. I used it with Vaya with no issues.

  • +1

Can someone give us a rough idea on battery life.
I come from a note 2 which had ok life but now its killer at 4 days heavy use on one charge with a zerolemon 9300mAh battery.
Approx 13.5 hours screen on time and hours of phone calls and navigation.

I find that the note 2 is getting a battering with my work now and its starting to play up.

  • Pardon my ignorance, but would it be doable to buy say, the Telstra 4GX phone mentioned above, and use it only as a wifi hotspot? Could I buy the 5Gb/yr for $50 on prepaid and then just keep it only to act as a wifi hotspot?

The 4GX hotspot from Telstra is over $200, if you can find one. For $99 I'd have a full-frame colour screen. I'd imagine that maybe the dedicated hotpot device has a better range, but for a hotel room with 2-3 devices it should be ok?

    Thanks.

    • For a hotel room it'd work great. Hell, just use a wifi extender if you want.

      • Thanks Cronic. I can usually get free wifi from the various hotels that I stay in, but I'm in a Quest in Melbourne in a couple of weeks, and they charge like a wounded bull for Internet.

Is it possible to recharge a prepaid phone with prepaid mobile broadband? The $50 for 5Gb over a year would be perfect for me.

        • +1

The SIM card that's included with prepaid devices is a normal calling prepaid SIM (Starter pack) but you can still buy 365day data passes via the Telstra store.

On a different Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband offer and want to switch to Data Passes? Go to m.telstra.com from your Pre-Paid browser or log in to My Account

        • I'd honestly just grab a cheap used wifi modem that you can plug straight into the wall. I've seen some on ebay/gumtree or even new for roughly $20. This would mean you could get a plan for a year with a fair whack of data so you can set and forget.

I've only got experience with Optus, you can keep recharging $5 at a time on the pre-paid which will give you an extra 500MB for that month. ($10 a GB).

    • Yes.
Perhaps the battery life would be better on the dedicated WiFi hotspot?
Other than that I can think of no advantage.
      Go the Telstra 4GX Buzz.

  • +1

    Well timed bargain, TY OP.
My son (21) dropped his handset a year ago, cracked the screen and has been carrying on with it, quite happily, ever since. Two days ago, he reported that the battery life was fading and the screen occasionally froze, so it is new phone time. He has a ZTE T22, so he is already familiar and comfortable with the brand's UI, and he is on Vaya prepaid, so it will work fine on Optus.
BTW, I happily recommend Bagman, have used him several times on various unlocks, always responds promptly. Good value, IMO.

  • should i bother upgrading/updating my mum's G526 to this?

    • +2

      I wouldn't upgrade my g526 to this.

However, I'm trying to upgrade my Mum's g300 to this :)

  • Lucky enough to get one! Thanks!

  • Just got one of theses how do you increase the internal storage and reduce the phone storage?

    • which store?

    • You need to contact SifuDean on whirlpool, I believe he is also contactable on the zte facebook page

  • I got one at Safeway Doncaster (Melbourne, yep, it's still a Safeway) at 8am.
Seems like a nice unit, fast and responsive UI. But a bit placticky, can anyone recommend a decent (and cheap) case?

    • No cases available. Chinese OEM Phone, so yeahs. You can get a generic sock case or hard carry pouch though.

  • can anyone recommend a decent (and cheap) case?

    Seconded.

  • Zero stock in Tasmania it seems. Nice one WW, more reason to avoid you

  • I've heard people say this won't work on Telstra since it doesn't have an 850 3G band, but Telstra uses 2100 for voice as well, doesn't it, which this phone does have. Does anyone have experience with this phone on the Telstra network? I usually stay in metropolitan Melbourne. Bottom line, would I have voice reception and 4G data?

  • did anyone managed to root this unit?

    • iROOT, or KingRoot should work.

  • +1

I picked one up today. My lord the screen hurts my eyes so much. I'm used to the Samsung S5 screen, and this has issues with contrast. I constantly have to tilt it facing the right hand side for better quality. The construction doesn't feel 100% solid, but it's fairly good. For $49.50, i'd say this is a REASONABLE price. Not so much a massive bargain.

  • Had anyone did a re-partition of the internal storage?

  • I bought this phone from woolies today $49.
Unlocked it with the help of bagman.
Using Telstra sim i can make calls but can not receive.
Are there any fixes for this or am i stuck due to the no 3g 850?
Otherwise i will have to return it in the morning.

    • Not a good idea to buy it for Telstra. Still, if that was the issue you wouldn't be able to use it for any calls (how's data?)
      Check signal status in settings…

      • Says I'm on Telstra 4gnetwork.
        Lte network type
        Signal strength -112dbm 27asu
        Service state , in Service
        Mobile network state, disconnected. ???
        Data works awesome on 4g
Voice call Telstra mobile is blanked out ???
        Cheers
BTW takes forever to start calling \ ringing ?

        • +1

Kristian, I am also on Telstra and had the same issue after unlocking this phone. 4G data was blazing fast, outgoing calls were fine, all incoming calls went straight to voicemail. I figured out the solution: go into settings/wireless & networks/more/Mobile networks/Preferred network type. Switch to GSM/WCDMA Only. You will lose 4G data but regain incoming calls depending on the towers in your area.
Whenever you want to use 4G again, switch back to the original setting LTE (Auto).
          Cumbersome but effective.
Let me know if this works for you.

Personally, I get few incoming calls in general, so I'll probably just leave it on 4G. If I do get any calls, I'll be able to see who it's from anyway when I get the message from Telstra and just call the party back. Hell, for people who don't like to be bothered, this is probably a bonus!

        • Hell, for people who don't like to be bothered, this is probably a bonus!

Yes, but people who do will want a refund.

        • +1

Update to my message above, I'm getting good 2G coverage in Melbourne today, no problems with incoming calls.
When I want to use 4G data, all I have to do is change the settings.

This will be an okay workaround for me until the 4GX goes on sale.

        • @coolrunnings:
Great thankyou very much i will do the same.

  • Huawei anyway.

  • Had it unlocked for my grandmother from some person on ebay for $5. Good service and unlocked succesfully… seems to be working fine on Vodafail network.

    • +2

      which ebay seller?

      • Sorry, seller adjusted their price and now appears to be out of stock. Might have to stick with the rest of the $10 unlocking fee on the market….

At least it should be fine unlocked on vodafone unlike some of the issues with the telstra network we're seeing.

  • I was happy with the screen when I fired it up.
The resolution doesn't seem bad to me at all.

Switching from an iPhone 4s, the extra screen real estate looked pretty damn good and the phone was impressively responsive for the price.

  • I bought this phone and Yes after I installed 6 apps I run out of storage.

I then rooted my phone using KingRoot

I then installed the app from the market called "MovetoSDcard" and moved all my apps

Now I have my normal 20 apps installed.

    Resolved.

  • +1

wow just picked up one to replace my y300 and have have been playing around with it,,love it so far

    • have downloaded 13 apps without any storage problems and have not irooted the phone, it displayed 5gig storage straight from the box

      • +2

warmbeer05, you're lucky. Some of the new stock has new firmware with the improved partition setup you have. The rest of us have to wait for ZTE to issue a firmware update on their website. I volunteered to beta test the update and it didn't install for me. I'm still waiting for a fix.

I'm loving this phone too. Very fast, and screen sharpness is better than I expected too.
It's a bargain at $49.50. Hope it lasts. Looking for a cheap case.

        • agree it is a bargain…

i googled to install Android Lollipop but found nothing..

And Yes i my firmware has storage issues.

  • anyone managed to buy a decent case?

    • anyone managed to buy a decent case?

      No.

  • I am very happy with this phone. It is certainly worth the money. Works beautifully with Amaysim.
