ZTE Fit Smart 4G Smartphone $49.50 (Save $49.50 - Half Price) @ Woolworths (Starts 29/7)

1280

It's been a while since we've had a great cheap phone deal and this would rival the Y550 deals from before if only they came with $50 credit.I felt this deserved to have its own deal separate from Guy Incogito's https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204482, and cheers to kronicmacstigator for highlighting it.

I apologise, this is my first deal (and it's stolen), and I am not sure how to format the below.

There is another thread which compared the Y550 to this (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186013), and I will post the positive highlights here:
"Hadn't heard of the ZTE Fit 4G Smart until looking at this post. Main benefits here are the internal storage amount (much better for apps) and the extra 4G band 28 700mhz which the Y550 doesn't have. -Important for Optus 4G coverage in regional areas.
The ZTE has a MTK Processor (not sure which) and the Y550 has the more popular Snapdragon 410 if that makes a difference."

"The Mediatek MT6582 processor in the ZTE should be fine for most uses, especially with its stock KitKat - it's benchmarks are comparable to the Tegra 3 or the Cortex A7. As it only needs to support a low-res screen, I actually expect it to be very fast.
I agree the ZTE kills the Huawei on all counts. Nobody's even mentioned that the ZTE has 10% more battery. If you're on the Optus Network, the Fit 4g Smart is the best value phone on the market."

I personally have had both phones, here are my points:
- This phone is locked to Optus, bagman unlocks for $10.
- I enjoyed my Huawei, but was frustrated by the storage issues. I lost the Huawei :( I thought the ZTE Fit Smart would be the answer to my problems with 8GB. Turns out this is partitioned and you can only really make use of 2GB! However, ZTE have finally come out with a solution to reflash this and get 5GB, I've done it and it works, but you have to contact them on whirlpool and there is a lengthy discussion on it there https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2387307
- A warning, I am on my second ZTE Fit Smart, mine just stopped charging suddenly and some others have pointed out this issue on whirlpool.
- Another warning, I find the phone has a number of annoying flaws that I didn't have with the Huawei, such as the battery getting hot, the phone lighting up randomly, it disconnecting from my pebble, camera default is too zoomed in, pics being completely cropped in apps, takes forever to charge on usb laptop charging (fine from plug socket) and the button and port placement at the side is different than most phones.

On a more positive note, for $49.50 I think this is a bargain once you apply the storage fix, the small storage is what ruins most phones in this price bracket. I bought it on special for $79 a few weeks back.

This has been a longer post than intended but I know you'll want the specs:

    great budget phone

    • +5

Worst phone I've ever had. Cheap is why it's craps. Avoid it!!!

    • As of 9:00 am

Woolies: Randwick, Eastlakes, Hillsdale - NO STOCK

While Eastgarden brach, won't bother to pick up the phone - very professional :P

      • anyone actually find these in stock anywhere? im not having any luck……………. not sure how they can sell something without actually having any initial stock?

        • anyone actually find these in stock anywhere?

          Yup.

        • Staff in Launceston rang around stores to find none in stock anywhere. Lots on order but she said not to expect them to actually arrive.
The other advertised phone also wasn't actually available either (different model completely)

        • @ramsheed:

Woolworth Bondi had a few this morning

Still playing around with it - Kingroot works

use link2 sd to move app to sd card (non core)

default storage sucks big time only 300 mb avail

after install less than 6 apps

  • +17

    Appreciate the write up, thanks

  • +1

    Thanks op

  • Looks reasonable for $49.50. It's a pity about the storage issues with this phone though.

    • +3

They have stated that newly manufactured stock have already fixed the issue but my replacement phone yesterday still had it. It's likely this is old stock being sold

  • +1

What size is the total storage once you apply the storage fix?. Is total still 8gb or ?

    • +2

No, it is 5.21GB. I was hoping for 8GB and they never explained the difference but it's probably something technical!

Not sure why the specs say "Memory 8GB Flash with 4.6GB user space"

      • 5.21GB available as in for user apps?. 2gb for OS is normal for Lollipop mobiles?.hmmmm

        • +2

Yes, 5.21GB for apps and media

        • @NotBritishorUK: thanks. Must be something they do with the storage format change - some of the roms for tablets for example do this - result is lower storage than u start of with…..

  • tldr sorry

can someone just say if it's locked and if so who to ?

    • +2

Apologies, locked to Optus, but bagman unlocks for a tenner

      • +23

I'm a baritone. Would he unlock for me ?

        • I'm an alto. Would he unlock for me ?

      • +7

What does he do for $20??? 😊

        • +7

          Two tenors?

        • +15

          For $20 he'll lock it again :D

      • +1

I was once baritone but when Jamie and I were taught the piano by Liberace both our voices broke into soprano

      • Is "bagman" slang for something or an actual place/website?

  • +1

What about storing apps to sd card?

    Locked to Optus?

    • +1

There is an option to have the card as the default save location but hardly any of these go there. Ever since I applied the fix, I don't see an option either to move apps to the card, I thought there was an option beforehand but hardly any apps allowed it

I was definitely able to put more apps on the card with the Huawei but the ones that wouldn't move caused issues with the small storage.

And yes locked to Optus but bagman unlocks for $10

  • +1

    Easy to root?

Also if you already are an Optus prepaid customer, they usually give you the unlock code free.

    • +6

      Easy to root?

      Size (H x W x D)
      134.5 x 67.4 x 10.3 mm

      • +3

Sounds like an easy root to me.

  • +2

Ouch! That sucks, the Alcatel pop s3 lets you store straight to SD card. Really all these low end phones with limited storage should allow it.

  • -6

    1GB Ram no no .

    • +6

Its a cheap <$100 phone What did you expect?. Nice as a back up just like the Y550's…

      • +5

Haha who'd seriously expect anymore than 1gb of ram on <$50 phone?

    • +2

      iPhone 6 has 1GB RAM ;-)

      • +1

but but Apple is optimised to different laws of physics

        ☺

  • +5

Don't intend to buy the phone but appreciate your effort.

  • might sounds stupid but how would this compare to a nexus 4? mine is ageing, i find the camera pretty sucky and the battery life is getting worse. It doesnt have 4g and i am on vaya. It is 8gb and i have no room for photos and music - thinking since this has sd card support it might help…

    • +1

The MT6582 CPU isn't bad, but honestly if you're coming from the nexus 4… Consider something else

    • Buy it, try it and see if you like it. If not, just re-sell it (someone will pay $50) and buy another battery for the Nexus.

      • Which doesn't have a removable battery it should be mentioned

    • Yeah but by the sounds of it you can't store apps on sd card. Unless you can root it. Mtk SoC might be another concern too. Comments like this seem to indicate this phone has issues with certain apps. http://whrl.pl/RelFPn
I've never owned either of the phones, but I can't see the TFT screen on this phone being anywhere near as good as the nexus 4. Of coarse at $49 you cant expect too much.

  • +1

Notice this comes with Android 4.4.4 Anyone know if its upgradeable to lollipop ? (just curious)

  • +1

    Thanks for the info.

  • +3

Bugger. Bought this the other day for 99 bucks because my other phone died and I needed a stopgap. Good little phone, but that's a much better price. Bugger.

    • +1

IF there is no IMEI code on the receipt, buy the phone again for $50 and return it?

      • Too much hassle.

Not that big of a deal, really. The phone is already starting to annoy me, despite rooting it, cleaning it and installing most things to SD. Screen is just too small for my thumbs! Also, data and texts are fine, but emergency calls only? Weird. Not that I ever call anyone.

        Oh well.

        • +6

$50 is no big deal? Return your ozbargain licence on your way out please.

  • +1

Thanks. Looks like a reasonably good value phone. ZTE quality is hit and miss. I got two ZTE Optus tablets. One is reliable and one would reboot randomly even after factory reset. Hope they have improved quality control.

  • +1

guys have you seen this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS484OtY4mM

These ZTE people seem like they will make waves

    • I'd be honest and tell you the truth about these phone manufacturers but…

Most of this tech filters through the makers anyway.

    • +4

Careful, they're watching you right now. Make sure to tape up your web cam. And also that portrait hanging up in your room? There's a hidden camera lens disguised as a leaf in the upper right tree.

      • +1

can you put some clothes on please?

        …watching you through your webcam.

    • +1

Lost69 is our resident troll on all smartphone posts. He apparently lives in a cave and refuses to join the dumb sheeps and start using a smartphone. He has apparently never used one and never will but he claims that he knows a lot about them.

  • old android, old (extraordinarily) display,
    1gb #budget mtk
    $60[50] bout right yair .

Best of all no (B5) 850mhz\ lte_flat rate.
yerp still considerabl outdated v huawei

  • +2

This doesn't have UMTS 850 so it's useless on Telstra.

Best deal since Y550 I'd say, but Y550 for $40 with $49 vodafone cap still beats this comfortably.

    • +1

I disagree. This was the best Android phone deal since the Y550 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194839

Essentially $20 unlocked (once factoring in free 3 months of netflix), and has support for band 28 and 850 thus good on Telstra too. I don't know how the fit stacks up, but it triple the price unlocked.

      • Not the best for everyone. I won't buy a phone below 4.5".

        • I have a Dyna Tac in a draw with your name on it

    • Wouldn't this phone still connect to Telstra 3G on 2100MHz?

  • +1

I have two phones with MTK 658x series soc, the GPS is completely useless and never sees a GPS satellite. If anyone gets this please report back on GPS acquisition speed and accuracy.

    • +1

The Y550 has problems with its GPS as well.

The Y550 doesn't support OTG USB.

      • +1

No it does not… not that GPS on mine has faltered and also a friends Y550.
I am aware of the thread on wp.

      • +1

I'm also aware of the Whirlpool forums. I've not had any problems with GPS on my Y550. Read somewhere that some users are getting better GPS reception when the battery is fully charged and/or plugged in. I always conserve battery and also turn of bluetooth+Wifi and kill all background apps.

Yes, the GPS in the Y550 is definitely not the most sensitive GPS. I gave one to my brother who said it was worse than his Samsung Galaxy Gio. When I asked why he replied his old phone could easily lock onto GPS satellites indoors!

I think some of the posts in the Whirlpool forums need to be taken in perspective.

We tested the Y550 GPS running Google maps. While driving 110km/h along the Hume Hwy the Y550 was able to get a GPS lock quicker than the $99 car GPS (a Mio Moov 300). Both devices started from cold, the Y550 wasn't plugged into anything. It blew my mind because I had read the Whirlpool forums and believed this was not possible.

  • They say this mobile was great price at 99 but yeh got to get my hands on this one

  • +1

Good price. Gps good on mine. Roots with iroot. Cons: camera poor, no cases. Pros: feels fast.

  • BEWARE PHONE HAS CONSTACONSTANT ISSUES.
Unless ur using the phone as a disposable phone then yes it's worthy

Had one n regret it till today. Warranty did nothing n useless customer service.

    Enough said

    • +9

And it would seem stuck caps lock and no spell check

      • -3

No autocorrect for you as well 😀

      • +3

lol sorry i was in a rush

        the Issues i had were:

        1. Unable to read any of my Micro SD cards
        2. Battery kept dying super fast
        3. Says reception is always unavailable
        4. Had to keep deleting apps in order to update any apps as memory couldn't detect my SD cards
        5. Camera is so shocking its not worth using it at all

I'm sure there was more i just can't think of them atm as i have thrown the phone into the ocean (off a jetty) :)

        • +1

Dammit.. I liked your CAPS LOCK POST better..

        • Mine has none of these issues, guess you got a dodgy one.

I'm getting at least two days battery life, camera is fine, SD card is detected fine. Thankfully, considering how small the internal memory is, most of my apps are on the SD.

As for reception, I can't make any calls except emergency. Texts are fine, data is fine, receiving calls is fine, but I can't call. That's my only issue. And not a big one, considering I never call anyone.

Shame about the useless warranty and customer service though.

        • I did not have any of these issues on mine.

  • OP - Is this your statement "This phone is locked to Optus, bagman unlocks for $10"?

Or were you quoting someone else?

Can you confirm that Bagman can unlock this model ZTE, and that he will do so for $10?

    • -2

Does Bagman wear a trench coat and hang out in dark alleys?

    • +5

Just to confirm, I have been doing the codes for $10 on my website http://www.unlockit.codes/

      • Just to confirm, I have been doing the codes for $10 on my website

        Thanks.

To be clear. Are you confirming that you can generate the code for this model, the ZTE Fit?

        • +2

I can get the codes for the ZTE Fit (if its in the database)and it will take from an hour to 24 hours to get back.

        • @Bagman:

I can get the codes for the ZTE Fit and it will take from an hour to 24 hours to get back.

          OK. Thanks again, for confirmation.

You will have to wait, as the sale has not started.

        • @A3Australia:
If the code is not found in the database then I do a full refund.

        • @Bagman:

          (if its in the database)
If the code is not found in the database then I do a full refund.

We need to know this FIRST - before we buy this OPTUS phone.

        • +1

          @A3Australia:

It was my statement, bagman unlocked both of mine of this model

  • That screen res though… on a 4.5" screen. I don't know…. Nexus 4 has 1280x768 on 4.7" screen, and it's that spectacular either. Of course this is at $50, but like… 854x480?

    • +4

On the flipside, with a low res screen it will use much less power.

      • True, OP stated that it still has battery heating issues on the ZTE. The 854x480, i'm just curious how bad it really looks. Gotta see this thing in person.

    • It's similar to Galaxy S2 or the earlier Xperia phones.
