  • So this phone supports band 28? Yet it stuck on jellybean? These lower end Android phones do benefit from getting kitkat.

However the deal here is the 3 months Netflix.:)

  • +2

fhd video is pretty impressive for a $49 crap phone

    • Only 24fps though - not 30. :(

  • Is this phone okay to be used as a hot spot device ? I was looking for a phone to use as a wifi hotspot and also to make couple of call a day. Any recommendations?

  • Ooo not a bad price for a 4G smartphone. I have an iPhone 4 as my second phone but I've been meaning to switch to a 4g phone. Would this be similar or better than the iPhone 4?

    • I would say no.

    • It would be significantly faster with the quad core processor and 1G ram. Larger screen also, slightly lower pixel density and no IPS but still good. Camera might not be quite as good though…

  • This seems like a good Optus alternative to the ~$50 Huawei Y550 deals that the Voda users are always getting. Anyone know if the Australian models come with the Snapdragon 400 that the UK models did? And if these are on 4.4 kitkat yet?

  • Anyone know how good the camera is on this thing? The y550 I thought produced decent enough shots even indoors

  • I wonder if this is free to unlock as well…

    • I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/tutorial-roo…
Thats a tutorial on how to unlock your Alcatel Pop S3. Its gotta be rooted first though and u copy over the files using adb.
Or someone posted the recovery files where u can flash with cwm.
I havent tried it yet eagerly waiting for mine to arrive.

I will opt in for the ebay unlock code first. Fingers (and toes) cross hoping it will work.

        • Just got an ebay unlock code as well.
          Got mine from this guy
          http://m.ebay.com/itm/151358725941?_mwBanner=1
As the phone was a present for my mum i wanted her to use it asap so didnt bother unlocking it myself.
I paid £0.99 Ebay shows Approx $1.53 but on my paypal i was charged $2.05.
So it looks like i paid $.30c more than the listings from India.
I paid for it and sent a msg with the imei and provider ID 2hours later he responded with the unlock code
Gotta wait till my mum comes home with her sim to try the unlock code

  • Looks like u can root it easily with towelroot. Just brought 1 for my mum to use
Edit sorry double posting replied above ^

  • Can the free Netflix be used on PC or only via the phone? If you cancel the Optus prepaid, do you keep the 3 months netflix?

    • +1

I have never used it but pretty sure you can add the 3 months to any even existing accounts by way of a code. Check previous threads

    • +1

The Netflix can be used on any device, phone, PC, smart TV and depending on your type of account you can have several sessions of Netflix running simultaneously.

As for the 3 months, once you activate your phone you will either receive an email or sms with a code which you redeem within your existing Netflix account, this will give you around $30 credit which is enough for 3 months of standard Netflix subscription. Alternatively you can opt for the premium account and get 2 months. Basically its like a credit code.

The codes can also be stacked! I have stacked 2 codes from the previous prepaid deals and now have 6 months on my Netflix.

      • $36 ($35.70 ish, $11.90/month) credit but yes you're right :)

        • I don't even think it's a $ amount, just a 3 month period. I've got a US netflix account and when I applied the code, I got a credit of US$26.97 (3x$8.99 plan), which is the equivalent of our $11.99 plan.

        • @starionx:

Well yeah they give you 3 months worth, but as a $ amount. Like im on the premium $15/month one and am able to stay on it, they just credit the $36 against the account so I get 2 and a bit months worth.

  • So can we unlock this phone ? Seems like some of the users can't.

    • Found alot of unlock codes on ebay… not sure if they will work. They have claimed to unlock all carriers…

Bought one anyway, going to toy around with it.

      • How did you go with the unlock code ? Did it work ?

        • Waiting for Optus shipment… maybe some other people can comment on it.

        • @googleyahoo69: Thanks. I got mine and tried on Optus website but it says $25 fees.

        • @ozshaz:
wanna try ebay and report back? i think its app $2

  • OzBargain hug of death? Optus page not loading…

    • working here

      • Strange. This is what I'm getting. Other sites working fine…

        • Blessing in disguise then. I have way too many "spare" phones already.

        • I've been getting that for the last 4 hours. :(

  • Has anyone received their order? Seems like Optus are bit struggling with this one.

  • Sold out?. There's no buy button on the page.

I think it was part of the click frenzy sale which I think has finished.

Got the phone today and unlocked it for under $2.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15-Mins-Unlock-Code-Alcatel-OneTo…

It sucks when no one else has tried to unlock it (c'mon, it's only $2 to try) and report back to confirm it works. No team spirit at all.

    Quick impression of the phone.

Done my research and confirm the Pop S3 (50505S) uses a Snagdragon 400 Quad CPU. The phone also has 4G bands that will work with Telstra, very comprehensive for a low budget phone.

Aside from the screen is substandard (similar to Nokia 530), I do not have any complaint for this phone (used as a spare). You can uninstall alot of the junk apps that came with it to free up some space.

The phone feels pretty solid, and reminds me of an iphone 4 (not sure if this is a bad thing), but definitely looks ok.

Possible the best $50 I have spent

For $50 + unlocking fee, I have not made a happier $50 purchase… (on top of the $9 switch, $5 SD card… and so on…)

    OH YEA! BTW!

    THanks OP!!!!

    • Welcome :) Cheers for the information!

    • I was thinking of buying one of these to tether from, but too late for this deal :(

I've read a couple of reviews - less generous than yours. Mentions of overheating and a quickly broken power button, among other things less than favourable.

If you're inclined to tether some data for a bit (with and without the phone on charge), it would be great to hear you're impressions of it in that role.

Also, let us know if you actually receive a mailed hardcopy of the unlock code, as stated now as requirement on all the Ebay unlocking listings. The other Alcatel ones, apart from yours, keenly stress (assume lie) about a mailout-only, from India!

      Thanks.

      • Sorry buddy, Will not be using it for tethering.

I use mine as a spare phone and compared against a Nokia 530, Xperia M as well the 4G Huawei for $89 from KMart. I like this one better because it has what I needed 4G, pocket size and fast enough to run basic apps. The screen would be the only draw back when compared to the Huawei and Xperia M.

I have previously used ebay for unlock codes for a few other phones and almost certain they DO NOT mail out a hard copy, they email your ebay registered email address. I believe they have listed such in order to comply with eBay policies (aimed at the state) as a result of US regulations on sale of digital content. TBH, for $2, I would not care if a hard copy is send rather than they charge me $1 to send me something numbers printed on an A4 paper.

        • The changes in the listings are fairly recent, so realised that they were related to recent U.S. goings on, vis-à-vis. Mailout promise for show, I know. I would actually be amused if anything did arrive.

  • Received mine yesterday and gave it to my mum to use.

Anyways i rooted it already. Was quite simple just went to http://towelroot.info dled the apk and installed. Then installed supersu and away i went.
Seems like a value for money device. Havent played with it that much since its a present for my mum. But seems like an ok phone. Hmm the batt seems to be draining abit quick though was playing with it for 15min (after full charge)and batt is already down to 97%.
Least i can run greenify and other batt management tools on it later on

    They are in stock again.

  • Can we sell the Netflix credit to someone else? Anyone want mine?

    • How much do you want for the Netflix credit? If your able to sell it and I can use it, would $10 seem like fair amount, If so. I'll buy it

  • Mine gets better reception than my note 4.

  • I want the phone and the free 3 months of optus but i don't want to use optus.
What are the steps to activate it, get the codes and then deactivate it?
I don't want to be stuck with opts on a high monthly fee as i only want it for (a) Netflix Code and (b) as a spare phone to use with lebara $10 3 month credit.
    Thanks

    • Ok just did this - USD23.97 deposited into my Netflix USA account without any money paid to optus.
So I just inserted the SIM, did the online activation and chose the $30 plan but didn't put any money in. Even without any credit the phone works to receive a couple of activation messages from Optus. A couple of days later I turned the phone on again and received a txt about Netflix with a url.

I typed the URL into my computer and clicked a button on the screen to reveal a voucher code. They gave me a URL like netflix special offers. First I logged into Netflix with my account details, then I went to this special offers url, typed in my voucher code - tada 23.97.

All up the phone really cost me about $20.

Btw if you don't like Optus I used the ebay unlocking guy linked above and worked.
