[AMA] Some Random Guy with a Title Too Short

Hey,

I'm a completely random person with practically no insightful information to offer the public. I have made no major achievements in my life, aged 33 and still live with my parents. Go ahead and ask me anything.

  • How do you explain your situation to friends and family?

Do you care what they think?

    • My mother and partner are the only people I can really talk to openly most of the time.

I have a complex mind which many find difficult to understand. A lot of the time I can't express how I feel mentally in words so others 'get' what I'm trying to say.

My friends simply 'accept' me for who I am, although, I don't believe they 'understand' who I am.

The problem with my friends is that I have always been their emotional support, so when I show signs of breaking down they don't really know what to do. I don't get to see them all to often, so the last thing I want to do is drag the mood down when we catch up.

      • +1

Do you lie to your friend? Myself personally, I tend to cover up/lie whenever bad things happen to me with the idea of I don't want them to pity/judge me. Nowadays not sure if that's what friends are for, I found myself felling lonely trying to fix things myself.

  • Would you rather: Be able to stay awake for the rest of your life with no side effects (Never sleep again) OR $1 Million

    • I would hate to continually go through the pain of people I grow to love. So 1 million would be fine for me. That way I could invest it appropriately and help my family down the line.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

  • Do you believe in alien?

    • I find it hard to believe that we are the only life form capable of cognition throughout the galexy.

  • Do you have a car? Why do you have that one?

    • I don't have a car, I have a bike. It is a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 250R.

  • +2

    Are you me?

  • Do I want cupcakes for dessert?

  • Dr Payne, what is your zodiac?

  • You said you previously worked in sales. I'm actually interested in IT and have worked roughly 6 months in it as a quasi-level 1 desktop support (but have no formal qualifications or certs). Right now I'm a salesperson and thought I'd be kinda interesting to do what I enjoy now (sales) but also mesh it with my interest (IT / tech or any other kind of telecomms tech).

Do you think such an opportunity exists? I've only got business (Bachelor of Commerce) qualifications, a little bit of IT exp and a year of sales experience.

    • +1

Absolutely. This is one significant reason why I prefer 'smaller' companies over 'larger' ones.

For example, if you find a small ISP the chances are much higher that you will be a some what an 'all rounder'. This allows you to get a piece of the action from different avenues.

You have to keep in mind, many of the small ISP's are running off 10 or less people who will take care of a few thousand customers. So if a sales call comes in, you take it… If a technical support call comes in, you take it…

I have been in the industry since I was about 22 and only got certificates about 4 years into my career :D. Aim is to find someone who will give you a shot, then work your way up the ranks.

      • That's genuinely very helpful advice. Thanks.

I hope you find something good in your next gig.

      • +1 for smaller IT companies. Pay may not be great but I learnt alot of things from A-Z (all rounder). Gave me a strong broad knowledge foundation. You will probably end up learning more than in a corporate environment.

  • Dr Payne, how do we deal with a MIL who lives in with me and belching uncontrollably and is unable to cook? She wants me to spend all of the expenses which is difficult from my end, and my wife has just recovered from her operation. Any suggestion?

    • Pardon my ignorance, but are you talking about a mother in law?

      • Yes, sorry. She also takes my bed, so I have to sleep on a noisy air bed.

        • I lived with the 'in laws' for almost 3 years, and it was one of the hardest things in my life.

Is it an option to try find your own place? It can be expensive, but looking around can really pay off in the end. You can't put a price on your sanity.

If you are unable to do this, I would suggest sitting down and having a chat to her about it. But if it is her house, you don't really have a say and will have to suck it up unfortunately. The least you can do is try.

        • @DrPayne1990: This is my home though. Last year, she came over and stayed for three weeks without even asking for my permission beforehand!

        • @timbrot:

That's a different story then. Sit down and have a chat with her and lay down some ground rules.

  • What is the biggest regret in your life?

Do you believe in reincarnation and everyone that we meet in our life is predestined?

Why nice guys finish last ?

    • Because they let the girl finish first.

      • and sometimes that doesn't go as planned

The original post sounds like "look how hopeless I am, 33, live with parents, no achievements etc" but in reality you have a life a lot of people would be envious of. You moved out at 17, have had a decent career, have had long term relationships, raised a child for 3 years, have friends who look to you for support. You seem to have lived quite a full life so far. Not much of a sob story, contrary to what the original post suggested.

    • You are completely correct. It is unfortunate that it takes random people help me realize that.

When I'm are down in the dumps, it feels like the world is a horrible place and everything sucks.

  • Have you ever think life is so cruel so intensely that you honestly think about ending your life? Even though you're financial and health being is at the top-notch
Like ex: after you got raped by major event continuously with cruel/selfish environment

In what way do you reckon you can prevent yourselves to do that?

Have you ever been in depression? Is it because of External Environment or just Internal ? If it's because of Internal factor, how can you heal it, so we can prevent the death of loveable enthusiastic good hearted well-known man who died recently?

Have you ever think life is so cruel so intensely that you honestly think about ending your life?

Surprisingly not, suicide has never popped in my mind when I have been at my lowest. Instead, I actually become quite self destructive to the point where I don't care what happens to my body, abuse it and pretty much everyone else around me. Although, I have not been at that point for quite a long time… I was lucky to get through those points in my life with good friends around who would just deal with my outbursts and random violent rages.

In what way do you reckon you can prevent yourselves to do that?

I have been lucky with the woman in my life. She has kept me pretty stable, and not really sure how I would go without her which sucks… I know it's not healthy to be reliant on someone like that, so this is part of what I am trying to deal with internally within myself. I forgot how much she does for me, which caused me to act unappreciative of her compassion.

Have you ever been in depression?

      Absolutely.

The reminder of your questions, I have touched base on in my first response above.

Would you rather fight 1 JV sized duck or 12 duck sized JV

    • +1

I don't care how big a duck is, it's still a duck… I would kick its ass. Also, how would JV post on OzB with wings for hands?

      • +1

        quacks to text

    • 1 JV sized duck

You'd be quite bold to take on a duck that size.

  • I can understand what you exactly mean, the reason is we hold our selves back with too little things but we have to change out lige

  • Don't really have a question but you should totally read immunity to change by kegan and lahey.

edit: hey if you read it soon enough you can review it on this thread!

  • How do you deal with your unemployment and the judgemental surrounding?

Somewhat I think I am landed in your condition. Life was seem perfect until it hits a couple years ago. I was struggling with work and suffered from depression. Couldn't take it anymore due to the stress and deteriorating health so I quit. When back overseas to stay with parents, surprisingly I was happy at that time, even goes around travelling. The thing is after a while people starts asking what I want in life, no jobs and just having fun. I'm partly too scared to go back to work because of what happened. But I applied for some jobs but couldn't get any. I don't know whether I was unemployed for too long or they can see the lack of confidence in me.

Financially I think I'm ok. And I have property investment which earn me about 6k a month (minus interest 3k, so gross income is around 3k) and some savings in my account. After talking to people, I really don't see what I want to do in life or where I see myself in the next 5,10,15 years and I'm scared I will just be the same person i am today. Sometimes I even think whether life is really worth living. To be honest, its mainly the people judgement that puts me off. They see me as a failure and I'm thinking when I had that job back then, was I being ungrateful for quitting? Is this my sort of punishment.
