    12 seems like a good number:

    The first two props provide lift.
    The third and fourth ones provide direction.
    The fifth and sixth provide propulsion.
    The seventh and eigth props provide decelaration.
    The ninth and tenth props provide emotional support for the fist 8 props;
    while the eleventh and twelfth props stay in the shadows in case of stealth attack.
