[Expired] 5% off at JB Hi-Fi / Myer / David Jones + More by Using Woolworths eGift Cards from Cash Rewards

Moved to Forum (User request): Original Link

By taking advantage of the permanent Cash Rewards 5% off Woolworths eGift cards deal (http://www.cashrewards.com.au/woolworths-gift-cards), you can effectively get 5% off storewide at a number of other stores. It's only 5% but it's still a good option if your ING or ME Bank 5% cashback deal has expired, or you need to make a big purchase (e.g. a camera or TV at JB Hi-Fi).

Step 1: Login to Cash Rewards, proceed to the Woolworths gift cards section, and buy your discounted eGift card. The maximum single denomination you can buy is $400 but there's no limit to how many gift cards you can buy. Being an Ozbargainer you will probably want to buy the eGift card using your credit card to get points.

Step 2: Wait til you receive your eGift card(s) from Woolworths as an attached PDF in an email. It takes anywhere from a few hours up to 24 hours usually.

Step 3: Go to the Gift Cards section at your local Woolworths store and choose a gift card for the store you want 5% off at. These include:

  • Event Cinemas
  • Hoyts
  • Myer
  • David Jones
  • Jay Jays
  • Sportsgirl
  • Just Jeans
  • Smiggle
  • City Beach
  • Rebel Sport
  • Dymocks
  • BCF
  • Country Road
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Kathmandu
  • Supercheap Auto
  • Dusk
  • The Iconic
  • AMF Bowling
  • iTunes
and probably some others depending on what gift cards your local Woolworths has available.

Step 3: Purchase the gift card(s) using your Woolworths eGift card. Don't forget to scan your Everyday Rewards card to get points. BONUS: If you have a Woolworths staff discount card, you can get an additional 5% off the cost (as long as it's not a Woolworths/BIG W/Dick Smith/Woolworths Petrol/Masters gift card that you are buying with the eGift card). So for example, 10 x $100 JB Hi-Fi gift cards will scan for $950 if you use a Woolworths staff discount card.

Step 4: Redeem the gift card at the selected store. You'll have 12 months to redeem it.

NOTE: This is a similar version of the deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/146307) I posted last year that I thought would be a good reminder for everyone on here. Obviously not as good as 10% off, but still better than paying full price and something everyone should be aware of before buying things from big name stores like JB Hi-Fi, Myer and David Jones. Hopefully there'll be another Groupon 7.5% off Woolworths eGift cards deal again soon.

  • Heads up to people that this no longer works for most gift cards at woolies. Had $1k of Woolies egift cards to buy JB HI-FI cards, no dice.

  • -2

show some maths so that there is something concrete to this, rather than just a hack.

    • Ok I'll do an example for you then.

      FOR EXAMPLE:

Just say I wanted to buy this TV from JB Hi-Fi: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…
It's currently $699. Instead of paying $699 at JB Hi-Fi, I can pay $665 for 2 x $350 Woolworths eGift cards on Cash Rewards. I use these two eGift cards to buy 7 x $100 JB Hi-Fi gift cards at a physical Woolworths store. The price at the register at Woolworths will be $700. I pay using my eGift card, and the eGift card balance goes to $0.00. But effectively I have only paid $665.

I go into JB Hi-Fi with my 7 x $100 JB Hi-Fi gift cards, and use them to purchase the $699 TV. I am left with $1 on the JB Hi-Fi gift card.

      Therefore a $699 product cost me $665.
(+ the $1 left on the JB gift card).
      Therefore I saved 5%.

You're able to get it for around that price if you just do some haggling with jb, maybe even more.

        • +10

Well you could still haggle AND still pay using discounted gift cards. The salespeople that negotiate with you on price don't usually know your payment method.

        • +1

Why can't you haggle then use gift card?

        • -1

          @Mr Unreliable: *maybe even less.

  • I thought one of the conditions of the egift card was that you can't buy gift cards with them?

    • +2

Still works in physical Woolworths stores.

      • +2

True…. I do it all the times.

Like I recently bought Dyson V6 from JB-HiFi, which one was on special for $399. So what I did, I paid $380 to buy Woolworths gift cards worth $400. Then went to my local Woolworths store to buy 4$100 JB-HiFi gift cards and paid with discounted Woolworths eGift cards. But I was lucky, my everyday rewards card had an offer (targeted) that for every $100 spend in store, I'll get $15 voucher to buy groceries from Woolworths. So I did 4seperate transactions of $100 to buy JB-HiFi gift cards. Therefore effectively paid $380 to buy $400 JB-HiFi gift cards + $60 Vouchers to buy groceries from Woolworths.

          Petrol docket aswell?

        • i used AMEX offer to get $50 cash back instead with a FREE box of wine for the instance
plus the newsletter $25 off, I actually paid $424 for the V6 animal. or I could do it for $324.

        • +1

          @bargin193232222: oh yes… off course !!

        • +1

@bargin193232222: actually Qantas Frequent Points as well

        • +1

@bargin193232222: and I paid with Coles Master Credit Card to buy Woolworths eGift cards and I get 2 flybuys points every $1 spend anywhere from the card.

I don't think you should post this, something should stay as unwritten deal if you still want it to happen. This is not a deal, the more attention you draw the faster it will be shut down for everyone.

Sometimes I just hate some ozbargainer to ruin everyone's deal

P.S: Sorry but I will have to report this and i hope other will do the same, such thing like this is no difference with "price beat" post.
@OP: I hope you remove your post if you still want to have this deal

        • U must work for Woolworths or any of the stores listed.

  • +12

    wow.. people didnt know this?

have been doing this for years (via the entertainment book, not cash rewards)… thought it was common knowledge.

I sohuld have posted this before.

    • +1

My whole family must be stupid because none of them know of this "common knowledge"

      • +1

How can you call yourself "professional" if you don't even know this common knowledge.

This is not really a deal, you should stock up when Entertainment Book or Groupon has 7.5% off deal, then buy Myer/David Jones/JBHifi gift card when Woolworths has 10% off sale. That is call "professional"

(Well for me I can stack up another level…lol)

        • Not sure when I called myself "professional"…

Not sure that I said I didn't know about this…

Not sure when I said this was a deal…

I'm stating that fact this is not "common knowledge"

          That is all, good night

    • Yea I thought it was FAIRLY common knowledge too but it actually isn't something that is really that obvious until you actually do it.
Now that you know it, it sounds obvious, but I'm sure the first time you heard it or thought about it, you probably thought "that is cool.."

Also CashRewards > Entertainment Book - only because it arrives in your email much faster than your the Entertainment Book physical cards.

      • You can get egift cards from entertainment book too and they are delivered fairly quickly.

One thing to be careful about how though is some cards activate overnight eg rebel and event cinema so you need to get them at least the day before you use them. Jb seem to be immediate though. I stacked 7.5% discounted big w cards into jb cards into a 10% off macs at jb for a new Mac earlier this year.

  • +2

Isn't this common knowledge? Ie buying other store gift cards from woollies?

  • I'm not after anything expensive I can think of but anything helps I may have one item costing $80 in one of the mentioned stores and if they have other item in stock $60 so I could save $4 on my $80 and $3 on my $60 purchase wonder if it's worth the hassle if so do I buy $140 from this deal? Or less? Get the gift cards and then buy from store?cant these gift cards be used on the stores websites?

  • Sorry but have been doing that for years. If you get the Coles gift cards, then you can buy bunnings, and bunnings gift card is one use only, and they will give you the changes in money form too (so saving for more than 5%)

    • +2

I have used bunnings gift cards over multiple transactions but if there was less than $10 left they cash it out. Have been doing that for a number of years now.

      • Correct - locutus' explanation is a bit more specific. Bunnings give you change only if the remaining change required to be given is less than $10.
Basically Bunnings gift cards are like physical notes. So a $10 Bunnings Gift Card is like a $10 note, and when you pay with it they will give you change in cash as opposed to other gift cards where the remaining balance is available to use.

  • Does anyone know if WISH gift card can still be used to buy goods at Dicksmith stores?

    • Nope

    • Physical can as of about 3 weeks ago. Not egiftcards though.

  • Maybe everyone would be happier if this was just moved to the forums - it's still good info and discussion

    • Agreed. I'm finding this discussion interesting…

  • +1

Sometimes it's worth just putting it on your credit card rather than go thru that hassle. For example when your credit card offers extended warranty or price drop guarantee (if you think it will drop >5% of course .. Eg iPhone/iPad within 6 months of new release)

To me (depending on the product of course) I don't mind paying the 5% for extended warranty on some tech items

    • +1

This is the main disadvantage of this "method", alongside getting a refund.

If you get a refund, the retailer will usually insist on refunding back on its original source. This means if you go through this method to buy gift cards, and then want to refund the item you've purchased, they'll put it back on a gift card. Can be annoying for random stores that you only purchase stuff from once in a while.

  • From experience, Woolies promos > Coles promos for purchasing gift cards under their "spend $X get $Y back, excludes Gift Cards" type of promos because when you get Coles offers (e.g. spend $80 save $15) and try and buy JB Hifi or other gift cards, it does not work. I have not figured out yet whether you earn FlyBuys on gift card purchases.

For Woolies, it works with all the "spend $100 get $10 off" or 10% off promos. Also gives you your standard Everyday Rewards points as someone above mentioned - i.e. it treats it as a standard transaction. As was mentioned in OP, the only exceptions to all the "standard stuff" you would expect from Woolies is if you're buying gift cards of the WOW group (Big W, Woolies) - basically those WITHOUT pre-determined values.

I have also always been under the impression that when "Gift Cards" are excluded, it is more specifically excluding those gift cards without pre-determined value. This is definitely the case with Woolworths. Those with pre-determined values can be checked out through self checkout without any staff intervention, so if the system accepts it then it works.

    • I tried toysrus gift card $30 for spend $40 get $10 back promotion but it doesnt work? Even though total including goceries was $44.50

  • +1

This thread is very good, but I think this should be moved to a forum instead, as this is not a "bargain" per se.

    Admin/mod: what do you think?

  • -1

A mere 5% discount and you guys think it's a bargain? Pffttt rookies! If you look hard enough, you'd be able to get at least 25% on Woolies gift cards.

    • +1

      Please do share?

    • Yea.. good. Then you use that and still buy the same gift cards mentioned here? Isn't that even better?

  • Do coles no longer sell $100 visa prepaid cards? I went to 2 stores today looking to convert coles gift cards and both only had the $50 visa cards in stock

  • Is anyone still waiting on their e-gift cards. I usually order lots, but this latest batch has taken over 24 hours.

  • I wasn't able to purchase gift card using gift cards at Big W?

Are you able to at Woolies? Is t against T&Cs and you just have to get lucky? What's the best way to maximise your chances?

  • Any ideas if this still works?

  • Does this still work was lookibg to get something from jbhifi and save a little but im not sure if they have it in store as says online delivery.
So can these be used online too?
How long does it take to get them and i cant see if happening but im sure woolworths have a great range of jbhifi gift cards.
As for using them at jbhifi i take regardless they cant refuse them to make the purchase just worried I'm left with gift cards i cant use.
But it maybe an idea to check if they have what i want in store,is there not an option to use this same method online with jbhifi?

For those of you who understand how leverage works, you would purchase the eGiftcards from a provider who rewards not just yourself as the purchaser, but also the people who referred you into the system. Entertainment Book, RACV club etc just don't cut the mustard as they only reward your own shopping.

  • Can you still buy gift cards doing this and do Woolworths still sell good guys cards

  • does this still work?

  • Sure does. Just bought $1200 worth of JB vouchers following this method (actually purchased the Gift Cards though RACV, but looks like the cash rewards deal is still going).

  • Dont you have to pay extra for the gift card. E.g. I went to buy a Myer's gift card worth $100 and they asked me for $105

  • I wonder if it's possible to double up the 5% when you are a member of RACT? As you can get a 5% discount on the actual Wish Cards themselves then.
