Yamaha RX-V479 AV Receiver $599 @ Harvey Norman

80

I have been looking for a new AVR for a few weeks and just noticed that Harvey Norman has dropped the price on this one. It was $700 something a few days ago. It has all the new goodies including HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 (crucial for 4K UltraHD Blu Ray), Spotify connect etc. The only thing lacking is Audyssey and Dolby Atmos. The price is certainly pretty good. Not sure if it will be powerful enough to satisfy my music listening with only 2 x 80W… Denon AVR-X1200W is coming out in 3 weeks time and it has Audyssey and Dolby Atmos.

  • The RX-V379 was $599 and is now $449 too

  • I was tempted to buy this this morning, but couldn't decided. Can anyone recommend?

  • -1

Connectivity is one thing, but don't forget to go to the store and actually listen to it.

BTW, 80Watts is capable of blowing your eardrums. It is sufficient when used correctly.

Having said that, seems like a pretty standard low-end unit that Yamaha has licensed their name to. Meh.

    • seems like a pretty standard low-end unit that Yamaha has licensed their name to.

      Can you please elaborate?

      • Why would he - it was a throwaway statement?

        • How is it a throwaway statement?

I wanted to know more about it.. like who Yamaha apparently gets to make their receivers..

Son ofa Zombie elaborated a bit further below.. but not really specific enough as to who exactly makes the parts etc

Why are you answering for him anyway?

      • +1

Not sure what Son ofa Zombie is referring to, however Yamaha is on the the few main AVR brands that still do build a majority of their AVR's(Onkyo do as well afaik).
They may at times outsource or license the production of the lower end AVR's.

User M Code at the AVSforum usually has good and accurate information, here's a post from him, its several years old but I don't believe the situation has changed significantly in regards to Yamaha.

Inkel corporation and Anam Electronics are major suppliers for many other brands and may also supply lower end Yamaha AVR's at different times.

      • Don't get me wrong, if this is your first amp, this is going to be a lot of fun, and a step up from your TV's sound system.

Problem is most cheap big brand electronic units are no longer made with proprietary equipment or circuitry.
        e.g.
+Power supply is chinese brand X
+HDMI board is chinese brand Y
+Signal processing board is chinese brand Z
+faster faster, no time to refine, patch it later, we only got a $11 budget for labour!
+all licensed to Yamaha specifications! lol (in other words, Yamaha hasn't been in the same room as the unit)

These same brands (Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Sony etc… ) are still capable ( and do) still make some great systems in house - but usually they have an extra zero or 2 on the price tag.

I really don't want to spoil the party with facts. I don't blame them for what they do, they still got to pay the bills too, and these kind of units are the bread and butter for the balance sheet. If you want loud sounds, these are great. If you want to be transported to hear what the studio intended, it won't be found in this licensed-chinese box

        • Do you have any information about this particular model/range or are you just applying a broad brush stroke to it? From all the reviews I've read the 79 series is meant to be exceptional.

        • You may be surprised at some of the brands that use the same suppliers as the brands you have mentioned, they include NAD and Cambridge Audio who also use one of the ODMs to help with the design of their AVRs.

  • My sharehouse just broke up and I've got a receiver already, but the ex-housemate's kept his speakers. Can anyone recommend bookshelf or floor speakers in the $150-$350 range? My system is a 5.1 but I'd prefer to just have a pair of front speakers for space/cabling reasons.

  • Any decent deals going around for a 7.2 with zone 2? Essentially I want a 5.1 system with spotify connect and be able to output that to a zone 2 setup… around this price point. .ish…. not asking for much ; )

  • Zukand

Try this only available from rio

has everything you want and more for a price of $829

  • I've got an older Yamaha receiver (pre-HDMI) variety and a set of 6.1 speakers. Stunning sound. Unfortunately my kids decided to jam toys down the blowhole of the Subwoofer and killed it somehow :( Might upgrade the receiver when I get a new subwoofer to suit :)

    • I doubt that killed it, my kids filled mine with toys too and still going strong. :-)

  • Ended up going the 4910. Comes with an rx477 and some supposedly good speakers. Picked it up for 720. Will get a tclass amp for the zone 2 side of things.
