Looking 4 an OTG USB hub type device that can power/charge Android tablet & control keyboard etc through the hub simultaneously.

In other words, I want somethin that can "provide power to charge an upstream computer host and connectivity to downstream USB devices simultaneously."

All to be done through cable connection, i.e. no bluetooth.

USB 3.0, preferably.

And no rooting required.

May be one that is powerful enough to let me watch movies/videos stored on my thumb drive or microSD card?

Is there such a device or a combination of devices?

If not , how do you guys get such a set up done?

I have read quite a few conflicting advice.

For example, on these pages , it says this is possible with Ipad 1.5 years ago and an Android phone

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3FN4HAFXYN0QG/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt…

Yet on this page, many threads here state that this cannot be done with Android devices.

Advice?

Thanks a million.

tl:dr
Basically, I want to set up a portable mini desktop computer (i.e. Android tablet or phone) with keyboard and mouse and external drive (i.e. thumb drive or microSD card or DVD drive) while at the same time charge the 8" tablet. Possible?

Can't be done, Android devices use more than a free OS, they use pre-designed ports that don't support all the things a user might want to do. In short, the manufacturers don't think about what they do as much as some others.

Anyone know of an Android/pocket snitch with two ports or something like a lightning connector that does all that?

From my 5 minutes testing with my tablet, an OTG cable and a powered USB hub that had a USB stick and a phone connected to it, I think it is possible. The phone was charging (and was recognised as a camera) and USB stick was recognised as well (albeit unsupported format (nfts)). Though since it's Android, it might be just my tablet that can do that. That said, I am slightly leaning towards that it is possible for most devices (more likely if yours is a Samsung one that's on KitKat or more, since my tablet is Samsung one with KitKat). I've found someone doing what you've talked about on androidcentral.

I know that USB OTG cannot supply enough power for many machines (my DAC/amp combo, for example, has abillity to power from USB port, but with OTG it requires an external power input). So if you want to do something like what you've mentioned, you'd need some kind of external power supply (i.e. powered USB hub, etc).
In short, I think it'd depend on your USB hub.

USB 3.0 would be something hard to find because, most of the phones come with micro USB 2.0 port. I don't think it supports USB 3.0 speed. I know that Galaxy Note 3 comes with micro USB 3.0 port (I've seen it on my dad's phone), but that's about it.

I do something similar (bluetooth keyboard + wireless mouse), I could feel that the OS is not designed for a mouse and a keyboard, so don't expect a huge productivity boost from it.

    • I know that Galaxy Note 3 comes with micro USB 3.0 port (I've seen it on my dad's phone), but that's about it.

And the Galaxy S5, just FYI :)

      • Completely forgot about S5. It's a shame that they've removed USB 3.0 from Note 4 onwards. I've heard that there is an issue with 2.4ghz frequency for wireless connections, but who knows, it might be average day users not really noticing any differences (my dad, for example, doesn't understand the difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0 and just uses USB 2.0 cables for Note 3).

  • Looks like you can charge while operating USB devices. Looking at this for my Chuwi Hi8:

    • I might buy one of these.

Can you see a tracking number attached to the item in your ebay summary? Even cheap stuff from HK sellers often has that.

      • +1

        It has a tracking number.

Yes, it is being sent from Malaysia.

        • No 'HK' at the end of the tracking number?

Anything with HK tracking has always required a signature from me to collect. If any different with Malaysia Post tracking, I'd be interested to know.

          Thanks.

        • Hi Lurker. Did the hub require a signature when delivered, or did it just turn up in the regular mail?

I'm ordering one of these: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/291371387441 for Android use. May be of interest to you.

        • @zally:

It arrives in my regular mailbox at home . Basically the size of a long usb hub.

          No signature required.

But note that it is can only do charging and connecting downstream on certain Android devices.

          See my post above.
