I've never seen Z3795 used in anything other than the business models (i.e. HP, Lenovo etc). They all go up to $1000 AUD ish as far as I know in terms of their normal price. I almost have a feeling that they are for business models and thus not subsidised by Intel as much.

So yeah, I doubt you'd be able to find anything similar to what you are talking about anytime soon.

That said, if you want something as low spec as a Nexus 7 2012, I think some of the Asus tablets would suite your bill. I think I've seen them selling one with Intel Atom CPU with 1GB RAM (which is better than Nexus 7 2012, imo) for $100~$200 AUD from their store.

Also this tablet probably beats Nexus 7 2012 in terms of hardware at least, not sure how z3740 would fair against Tegra 3. Since z3740 competes with Snapdragon 600 and 800, it probably is better than Tegra 3.

      • Yes I know, it was a hypothetical device - just a bit of tongue in cheek.
Seems I wasn't clear aboiut the N7 Gen 1, I have 1 to sell as it's been replaced by the Acer.

For heavens sakes, why people negging my comment? they obviously have nothing better to do.
Forget it, I'll keep comments and advice to myself in future

Well as we ended up with a spare new unit I was going to offer it to another OzB, but now I'll just flog it off someplace for profit

        • +1

I think it's because tongue in cheek is really hard to tell apart from actual comments online.
Didn't neg you btw, but that said, people neg all the time, don't take it personal.

        • @AznMitch: Maybe I se the humour in my head more than others see it on screen….I'm too sensitive and maybe I should expect people to neg cos they can. I just don't see why they should and why other should accept it. Nope, didn't think you were negging btw.

        • +1

@rayski57: Eh, I think people see negs differently. Some people just neg to show that they disagree, some people neg for other reasons etc etc. Or some people are like me, use touchscreen, accidentally neg without realising(happened to me several times with my phone).

Don't dwell on it too much, I personally see it as inevitable (there are many many people on Ozbargain, people will see negs differently to one another), so I ended up just accepting that "people neg all the time and it probably was not intended to be insulting as I see them to be sometimes".

  • +3

Almost everyone who came out of auburn msy with one of this on their hand. Some people even bring the whole family.
    Lol

    • Checking their online availability most stores now out of stock.
They are on ebay for $190+

      • Just came back from Varsity Lakes with 3 (whole family seems to have come out of the woodwork for 1) about 90 mins ago.
They had 4 left when I picked mine up.

  • Correct me if I am wrong but the cpu on this is slightly better than chuwi hi8. Cpuboss comparison here
    http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Atom-Z3740-vs-Intel-Atom-Z3736…

    • Z3740 is better than Z3736, if you minus by number it's at least 4 numbers in between. Just like i3 and i7 also 4 numbers in between… lol.

      • Lol. Someone mentioned above that chuwi has a faster processor that's why

        • probably referring to the Vi8

  • Other options in this price range for a windows tablet?

    • Well, you can get the HP Stream 7 or Toshiba Encore. Both have a GB less RAM than this, and I think the 7 has half the internal storage too.

    • You may be able to find the PendoPad 7" at a local Coles. Bought one, but that screen resolution is a nuisance. Looks reasonable at 1024x600, but some apps won't run unless it's changed to 1024x800 (interpolated)
I bought one of these Acers. We'll see how it goes.

      • For reference, we own a Nexus 7 Gen 1 that has been great and a PedoPad 7" (Android quad core) from Target at $99.
This is the 2nd Pedo as the 1st was giving us trouble with wifi and the charge cable kept dropping out after a couple of dozen uses. 2nd one is starting to do the same thing.
I have the Acer out of the box and setting up as I type……
Windows seems to be having some issues with updates, but the tablet itself is 300% better in display/performance/materials etc.
Acer had a BIOS & driver update that installed as soon as it caught up with windows

All in all = great buy

        • Awesome - I bought two of these to replace our 1st gen Nexus 7's so I'm looking forward to getting them now!

        • +1

@Deviner: A wee trick for young players to get snagged on….check the system time/date before doing updates etc. It seems thast it is set for 2013 (probably when they finished on the BIOS) and should be set to update from net, but can't do it 'cos of time/date mis-match. Hence the windows issues I was having.
Now to find asn owner for a used N7 Gen1 and back to Target for a refund on the dodgy Pedo

        • @rayski57: Cheers man I'll definitely keep it in mind.
Updated my N7's to 5.1 and hopefully find a sucker to buy two… :)

        • @Deviner: Not all things as they should be with this tablet.
After many hours of downloading GB's of win updates (they wouldn't install successfully if done in large groups), the BIOS was next on the list….
I still haven't fathomed why the Acer update utility keeps wanting to install 1.02 when the unit has 1.10.
Versions available from Acer site are 1.13,1.16 & 1.16 Win 10. The latter one is tiny, so I don't get how it could be a BIOS update.
Anyway, none have been succesfully installed. When you run them they all say something like 'this driver package is not compatible with your device'
It was downloaded from teh Acer support site after selecting the correct model…go figure.
Other than that, it's nice to have a real OS that has real apps and can do stuff you want rather than dinky little things only.
BUT due to the Win store being totally underwhelming, I'll will miss some of my special Andy apps (that I bought).

        • @rayski57: Argh.
Sounds like a very similar nightmare I had with an Acer laptop I bought a couple months back from OzB.
Acer's site is pretty horrendous for drivers etc sometimes!

I might download the drivers in advance to save me some heartache!

          Cheers for the headsup again!

        • @Deviner: No problem. I don't mind the Acer site to d/l docs & s/w, some sites are truly horrendous or have nothing for your model.
I've given up on updating the bios until Win10 lands when I will try the Win10 BIOS update (will prolly complain cos it's non-win10 step isn't installed).
Yeah, you can have s/w issues with any brand & it's not necesarily the brands fault, but in the case of these tablets I'm surprised that Acer shipped them with a BIOS released last year.

        • @rayski57: For whatever reason today the tablet said it needed a reboot after a minor Win update.
When it came back on it was updating the BIOS to 1.16 - go figure. I'm currently downloading the Win 10 update…will let you know how it goes when I get up later this morning.

        • @rayski57:
BIOS and Windows 10 update went through fine here.

        • @PainToad: Yeah, same. 2.1GB downlaod and around 1hr install to go time. Win10 BIOS 1.16 went off without a hitch.
My camera still isn't recognised by Skype in Win 10 (wasn't in Win 8.1)….don't know why. Just rebooting now in the hope that something needed a reboot…nope not working and windows doesn't fire it up either now. Is that happening to you?

        • @rayski57:
Haven't tested the camera. It's my gfs so I'll test tonight.

        • @PainToad: After several iterations of variables involving camera drivers/imaging subsystem drivers/windows update rollbacks I have the problem solved. If you strike the problem, you need to rollback the 2 camera (OV2722 & OV5693) drivers and reboot, test and if still no good, you need to rollback the Imaging Signal Processor 2400. Then with some luck you'll be OK. If not, then take each driver out of the 1.16 driver pack and place them where you can get to them in a drive root directory and install from there via the driver update/have disk option.

    • Unless you go for Chinese ones, these probably are the best that you could grab with $100 in Australia. Most windows tablets I've seen at this price range were 1GB ram ones, if not all.

I ordered mine online for pickup instore and the store has since gone 'Out of stock' on the website. Does this mean I have a reserved unit, or will I only get a refund?

    • +1

I'm in the same boat. Ordered this morning but no email to pickup and now out of stock. Maybe on backorder?

    • I also put in an order yesterday morning, but then I got nervous about it and went to buy one in the store instead, as the local store is only about a 20 minute drive away. Between when I left home and when I was standing in the queue at the shop, the stock availability for that store changed to "out of stock". Since I was already in the queue I waited and checked things with the staff member - he said that if I did not get an email telling me to come and pick up the tablet, I was out of luck. Later I got an email saying "Sorry, it is sold out at the moment, please try it later. We might have other promotion in the future, thanks for support MSY. Thank you and have a nice day!" I'm not sure if it makes a difference that you paid online, but I suspect not.

Lesson learned: if I want to buy something from MSY and am concerned they might sell out, I will go to the shop rather than trying to order online. With most businesses that take online orders, the reservation of stock happens pretty much in real time, but that's not the case with MSY.

(I did put in another order for the same item by delivery rather than pickup, and have gotten an email indicating the order has been confirmed, but their t&cs indicate this is not a slam dunk either. But hopefully I'll have better luck than the first time!)

  • +1

Out of stock at Balcatta. Said they will ring when stock comes in. Ordered mine last night.

  • +2

For those who ordered this morning but never received the email, check your account on the MSY website. I never got the email, but the status said "Ready For Pickup". I just went in with my order number and grabbed my tablet even though the store said out of stock.

  • +3

I placed an online order for pickup in store at South Hirstville around 10.15pm last night, got the order confirmation 5 minutes later. Been waiting all day for an email advising that it was ready to be picked up. Called into the South Hurstville store just before 4pm, got told that they were all gone already, so I won't be having my order request honoured. So lesson learnt it's pointless in placing an in store pick up order with MSY as it doesn't guarantee you'll get your order. Seems like online in store pickup orders take lowest priority

    • +1

That' sucks if that is the case.

    • +3

fck. I ordered there too. They need to honour it though, like come on. They show on the top bar "RESERVE ONLINE -> Pick up and Pay Instore". You read that MSY? RESERVE. As in when we place an order - we get a unit reserved for us to rock up and pick up. Just like mWave does.

    • It's MSY, all customers take lowest priority haha

  • +1

Received an email stating Out of Stock yet when I placed my order it was in stock and was in stock this morning when I checked again.

Fail MSY if you let walkins get stock first.

Really do not believe that you fulfil the orders as they come in as you write in the email due to the stock levels on your site when I ordered and when I checked again this morning.

Wish I could neg the deal but this isn't a neg reason.

    • That's why I called my local MSY (4 attempts to get thru on their useless central routing number) and asked them to hold them for me while I'd take 30 mins to get there. Past experience shows that Tricky Dickie, MSY and others can't be trusted to do the right thing when you place an order online

  • +2

Hi jlogic I haven't received an email from MSY cancelling my order yet, the NSW online store still has stock, I've sent MSY an email asking if my order will be filled from stock at the NSW online store which is at Chipping Norton.

I'm as PO'ed as you are, what's the point of having an online ordering system that sends an order confirmation that tells you "We will be in contact with you as soon as your order is ready" leading you to believe that the stock has been reserved for you, when the store staff don't make sure they reserve the stock for online orders before selling to in store customers.

  • +1

I am going to guess they won't fill orders from a different states online , due to the postage difference?

Same boat here, ordered and paid for via paypal while it said in stock, along with a few other items to make the postage worth it.
No email cancellation yet (although my states online and stores seem to be sold out)

In my logic process, i was thinking i probably would miss out if i drove over once they were open to buy in store, as the online orders would have put them out of stock before they opened, so took the hit on the postage cost instead, so i would get one.
I really hope it isn't a total crapshow with them selling them all over the counter and THEN looking at the online orders placed overnight.

    • +1

I went to the MSY shop last Sat. morning but the guy said out of stock, while online it said on stock in store and also online. So I made an ordered online in afternoon.
I just received an e-mail from Oz Post and give me a tracking number for my order. So I think order online with postage is worth it, consider so much complaints here about ordered online but can not pick up in shop.

      • Yeah. I received a call this morning my WA reservation couldn't be fulfilled but luckily my bet on online purchase from SA store went through and got an Auspost tracking number.

  • Hi, wukachuka your right I don't think MSY would be prepared to absorb the cost of shipping to another state. I had the same idea as you, given that this tablet was on sale almost as soon as I received the email on Friday night from MSY advertising the discounted price, I didn't think there would be any left available for sale in store by this morning.

Unfortunately the theory only works in practice when the supplier has an ordering system that prioritizes and reserves stock based the on the time the order is placed, which is the usual experience you get with most retailers that have an online ordering system.

Unfortunately this doesn't apply to MSY, which appears to have an online ordering system that appears to be about as sophisticated as sending an email to a retailer, then hoping they open it and read it and put aside the stock you requested before somebody else comes into the store and buys it, only works when supply exceeds demand.

  • +1

Thanks, OP - still some stock in the VIC online store so just purchased, ends up being $112.11 delivered, still very good value. Now to find a good case/keyboard setup!

    • +1

Don't buy any accessories for it yet until you receive it. Chances your order get cancelled is high.

      • Ah OK, have borne that in mind and not ordered anything else - although surely if they've accepted payment (as they have) they a contract exists that they need to fulfil?

        • Not in Australia when the retailers have not sufficient stock or pricing error excuses.

        • @wtfnodeal: Ah OK interesting. Don't think they can really claim pricing error given how long the price has been up for in this case ;) Insufficient stock is an interesting excuse, they shouldn't accept the order if so but from the comments here their stock control doesn't seem the most modern! On the upside VIC_Online is still showing as available on the website so I'm fairly hopeful. Kinda.

        • +1

@EDIflyer: MSY have already been slapped around by the ACCC and even after that their business practices are still pretty bad. I would not hold your breath, they will fight tooth and nail to get out of an obligation at the best of times and that's even if you have a case. I don't think you have a case even if they accepted payment.

  • Is anyone else having trouble with payment processing by credit card? It asks us (the customer) if the payment processing in the pop up was successful, but I don't get a pop up (nor does the browser block a popup)? Can't they work out if the processing has been successful without this unnecessary and broken step or am I missing something?

    • Couldn't get past this problem with credit card processing. Ended up using Paypal.

  • -3

even acer products are not quality it is still a good deal, given Windows 10 upgrades to this thing…

  • +1

I put an order in for mine at 10:50pm Friday night and rocked up to clayton around 11am on Saturday.

3 people infront of me had asked for them and were turned away, I was nervous as my order hadn't been fulfilled online however I got one as I was "third in the queue" so I think they have a system for reserving.

    Now on to the unit…
Screen is nice, but my backlight (unsure if its sensor) flickers, dims and brightens intermittently.

Holding parts of the back of the chassis will often activate touch points on the screen.

Windows needed 1gb of updates and 3 bios revisions before the Win 10 upgrade appeared, painfully slow with the internal storage.

I'll post performance stats later for those interested :-)

    • The screen flickering issue should have gone away after you updated the BIOS. Was that not the case for you?

  • Bought one after some hesitation. We have the ipad for games and sleep music but my 2 yr old keeps asking for my phone. So this will be my alternative.

  • For all those people thinking they may get their backorder filled, I have news and it's all bad.
Having been in IT for 30+ years I can tell you that when brands have excess stock of a model they have recently (or not so) superceded and want to clear the inventory, they offer it up as a batch lot (at heavily discounted prices) to retailers like HN/JB/MSY etc. That way they can cash out 100's possibly 1000's of units in 1 go. Thereby being able to focus on selling current models and having more cash to cover forward ordering of inventory they may have to ante up for 3-4 months in advance (at least in OZ).
As such, it's extremely unlikely we'll see anymore of this model in the market after existing retailer stocks go.

  • Anyone looked at using one of these with the Acer tablet? http://www.dicksmith.com.au/computers/move-8-univ-tablet-cas…
OR been able to confirm if this has a glass or plastic touchscreen (I tried listening while tapping but can't be sure).
Also, was going to replace wifes notebook as well as this (previously unplanned) tablet. Now I'm not sure if I should go ahead and buy the notebook or set her up with a decent BT keyboard and mouse as she doesn't do anything particularly taxing with a notebook.
I don't suppose someone knows of a decent BT mouse that's going cheap?

BTW, for those who have done all the updates and then tried to install Office only to find that 2.5GB free space isn't enough to download the install file here's a tip…..clean the crap out of your disk space, use the tools in file explorer (or other utilities), turn off hibernate - you can live with sleep or off. Also check how much storage has been allocated to system restore (mine was 5GB). I managed to gouge back 12.5GB after Office took 3GB (and I used some utilities to pare back the crap)

    • Thanks for the tips. I am still waiting for the item by post.
I also look arounding for the cover but I am more interested in this one, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EW5-Black-Folio-Leather-Holder-Ca… rather than the one in Disksmith.

      • Yeah, I just like the neat fit that you usually get with the real McCoy. The fleabay ones always look better online than they are in the flesh and no BT keyboard. Also when they say leather, unless they say real leather or genuine leather it'll be vinyl.
Watch out for this seller, they tend to play little tricks with the wording to get you to pay more than what they're sellng is worth.

  • +1

Seems this is 1 per customer.

Just got an email from MSY stating they are refunding the cost of 1 of the tablets I ordered and attached a picture of a catalogue that shows "LIMIT 1 PER CUSTOMER".

Never even seen the stupid catalogue before and their page still, as of a few minutes ago, has no mention of a limit.

    Absolute bullsh!t…

Don't know whether to order the second one using my gf's paypal account or if I should even bother now…
Sold both our Nexus tablets in anticipation of getting these..

    http://imgur.com/aLN2WxW

    • How odd, I pigked up 3 at Varsity Lakes branch on Saturday.
      I call BS MSY

      • Yeah… I can't even click "Add to Cart" now depsite VIC_Online allegedly still having stock.

        So I'm guessing that's a wrap…

        • see my comment above re: brands dumping old stock

        • @rayski57: Yeah I seen that earlier, same kinda thing happened with the Wii U basics etc so I don't expect them to be back.
Maybe there'll be something similar on sale soon.

Oh well - looks like she'll get her tablet and I'll miss out on this particular one then… >:/

    • I got the same email and a partial refund by paypal for one tablet and keyboard has been processed already.

  • Managed to place an order online (not pickup in-store). Why do I get the feeling that it might get cancelled? Havent received email saying order is confirmed and getting shipped. Placed the order Saturday arvo.

    • Ok from the MSY account status now 'ready for dispatch'

      • How long did yours take to change status? Mine's been showing as 'processing' for a few days now :(

  • +1

Bit the bullet and bought a used HP Stream 8 from eBay for around $112 including delivery; that night an email shows up fro this Acer tablet :| Now I have to justify to myself that the HP is better haha.

  • Mine is confirmed and just picked up at MSY dandenong, now…play time…

    • What time did you order it?

      • Ordered last friday, was not sure whether to buy or not, then get an email on this morning.

  • Page is gone now so I reckon this has expired.

Also some MSY Support said, regarding the 2nd unit:

"We really want to fulfil your order.

However due to the massive demand of the product, we already ran out the stock."

  • My order from Saturday is still in "preparation in progress", doesn't look good.

What happen if they cancel the order? Will they change the status to "Cancelled"? I just don't want to keep my hope up :(

    • Probably never tell you and the status will never change. That's what happened when I ordered a clearance item last year. Waited few days for the 'ready' email, finally contacted them and got a response saying it was sold out (in broken English of course).

That's why I was waiting out the front of MSY 20 minutes before opening…dispute having ordered online.

  • Checked with store. Sold out despite email acknowledgement. Better pay shipping to be safe next time. Dodgy.

    • Hmm well my online order is still showing as 'processing' so I'm doubtful it'll be fulfilled either!

      • Hit green refresh button. That changed mine to out of stock.

    • The email only says your order has been recieved

  • Bit late posting this. Received a call this morning and all outta stock. No more left in the country.

Was told even though it says in stock it could be out of stock due to delay in reporting stock levels.

I reckon if I rocked up at 1030 I would of scored one.

So sad, MSY why do sh*t like this. Was looking forward to using the tablet well my wife was. She been wanting something she could access Office on.

    • Neg worthy? Secret MSY spies?

  • This selling out should create more space in the desired Andy 5-1 Win10 space, together with a usable 12"-10"x1200p displays sought for [A$280].

  • My girlfriend's has had a distorted screen from out of the box. Thought some updates would fix it, but can't complete an upgrade because wifi connection is too flaky. Decided to use the restore DVD, wouldn't complete (guessing the SSD is also screwed).

Just started the DOA warranty process.

    • Geez hope they have another one for you.

      • MSY won't. This is why I went direct to Acer.

        • My W4 was DOA from MSY North Melbourne on the 1st and I got a replacement tablet on the 4th which was suprising as they were supposedly soldout Victoria-wide.

        • @jammy2:
Interesting. Acer were beyond painful to deal with. Going to MSY tonight. If there's no stock, MSY can deal with them as the unit is DOA.

        • @PainToad:
Woo they had one left. Praise the bargain hunter gods.

  • +3

Got a tracking email from auspost reads like it's getting delivered today. Hoping it's not a lemon

    • In fairness despite my scepticism I just received a tracking email too - look forward to it arriving :)

  • Anybody found a good case for it?

    • I've been looking, but I can't find them. Only decent one locally seems to be the Acer folio at MSY (who seem to be the only ones with stock as they're discontinued). Other than that you need to deal with imports that may or may not be what was represented on fleabay.

      • i have ordered this one http://i2.wp.com/www.yugatech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03… from TaoBao (which is pretty much ebay in China). It costs me about 45 AUD delivered using a freight forwarder. A bit expensive comparing to the tablet itself but at least its an official bluetooth keyboard made to fit this tablet. And it looks alright from the utube reviews. I think the official keyboard sold by MSY fits tablets that are of larger size. Will post an update once i receive mine if anyones interested.

here's how the one sold by MSY looks like with the tablet. http://i.ytimg.com/vi/BWAiGoMXkiE/maxresdefault.jpg

        • Interesting, the part no. that MSY are using appears to be for the smaller one that you have ordered from China.
http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/390734/TABLETPC_TABLET_PC_ACCESS… Australian sell with no stock but shows the correct product (designed for W4-820).
The video clip has that p/n on the box and it's the small one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIYrp_8tKv8
Maybe MSY have used the wrong image, or maybe they are passing off another model as that, I don't know but I'd rather the small one as it's a much better option.

        • OK, after scouring the net to try and find a good folio case for this tablet I have failed to find an affordable good option apart from the one on TaoBao that you found. Please link it so that the rest of us can indulge also.
BTW it seems the same part no. is used for both types of folio keyboard, the one you found and the one MSY show on their website. Both were avail. in OZ but it looks like the only stock left (also obsoleted now) is the MSY style.

  • rec'd mine today. it's manufactured in 2013

Confession: we got one of these - The Lovely bought it on a whim, over-ruling my strident objection to any Winsludge mobile device.

Why anybody would want one of these - even for free - is beyond me. Then again, there are people who use Windows phones (about five of them in the world)… and some people even use Apple Maps.

After ten minutes with it, The Lovely has accepted the error of her ways, and we're sending it back.

It's typical Microsludge: the default visuals are completely illegible, and changing them stuffs up literally everything, literally everywhere… like resizing the font on a 90's era webpage where everything's in tables with fixed-width cells.

The OS is even worse than Windows 8 on the desktop, which is saying something: my expectations weren't high (because it's got WinDreck on it), but ten minutes after unboxing it, we're packing it back up. It might have stood a chance if there was a non-smart TV in our house that didn't already have a dongle connected… but there isn't.

Compared to a proper tablet (even a Note 8 - I know, different price-point), this thing is beyond a joke. $99 was $99.01 too much.
